reading this story. It really makes no sense why a person would do this to another human being. What really gets me is the fact that if caught, this "pour soul" with get a "fair trail" of his peers. He might get off if his lawyer is good enough. He might get time in prison. But, for him, that might be bad. He gets 3 square meals a day and free health care, things that are not always a guarantee in the outside world.
But, I have a problem with this. In the old days, it was basically an eye for an eye. If you are caught stealing, then they cut of your hand. If you are caught killing your fellow man, then you too are killed. The very fact that this could be your fate kept the crime down.
Overall, our prison is overrun with these types of people. We, the American Tax Payer, are the ones that pay their debts. And in an economy that is as stressed as ours, I for one am up for strict laws. Though this will sound extreme, image what message you would send to a potential murderer if they witness someone that loses there life immediately after being convicted.
I am not saying it is right, but neither is the senseless type of killing like this.

Danny - I just read the story, damn. Sometimes I think we need to take a step back and realize what this gig is really all about...
What a horrible story. There have been a lot more stories of people, usually young people, attacking the homeless and vulnerable. It is horrible and unacceptable and offends some core decency in most people.
On the point of punishment however, I am glad society has progressed to the point where we have civilized means to deal with criminals. That eye for an eye stuff is from a point in time that was much less civilized and governments that simply reacted. I am very disturbed by governments killing their citizens. The idea that this action has been normalized and institutionalized by governments and much of society is very disturbing.
Amen Rich!. Danny, bringing this to the public's attention is the best way to handle it. When the public reacts to it, then usually, it brings pressures to bear that affect change. The symptom is living in a society that creates, develops and fosters this sort of psychological problem. Unwanted children that do not have a loving environment and system of accountability brings people and their unwanted behaviors into the world. The place where it stops is in loving and caring family environments.....period!
If you want to change, then be the change you want to see....not the other way around
Danny - that is just disgusting. I can't imagine someone so young being so evil. Just horrible. I'm with Rich though, an eye for an eye is not the way to go. The death penalty doesn't work, there are too many problems with our criminal justice system. There are too many mistakes and too much racism. We DO need to fix it, but I certainly don't know how to go about that.
Guys and gals, I can understand what you are all saying. With that said, I think you missed my point. Why is it the financial responsibilty for the American worker to pay for these criminals to live. You are right that in some cases the death penalty is not the answer, but the regular tax payer footing the bill is not the answer either. That is what I am more frustrated about. Maybe if the family of the convict is saddled with that burden, maybe then it might be better.
An even better idea, all these industry that are struggling, like the automotive industry, maybe instead of have regular grunt labors, maybe the prisons should have to go and work for these companies for a reduced wage that would go to the prison system in an effort to pay off the debt incurred. Maybe then the tax payer is relieved of the burden and the car industried might be able to survive.
Danny - I like your second idea. I think we are paying for this system in order to keep ourselves safe, it's part of our society, like paying to fix our roads, etc. However, since most of us feel it's not working I guess we need to think harder about how to fix it.
The fact is sometimes it IS bad upbringing, but often it isn't. And in many cases, such as extreme poverty, it is our society that has raised criminals, not really just the families are to blame. No excuses, bad behavior is bad behavior, but if you don't take a look at what creates it you won't have a lot of luck in fixing it.
