A year ago we were challenged by Mike Mueller who wrote his post What do you Love about your job? to write about "why I love my profession".  I thought this would be a great time to remember why I continue to love my profession and why I am determined to succeed in the Real Estate Industry.

Why i love my profession

It sure feels good when I take the every day challenges in our industry and turn it into a prize winning ending.

There are no two transactions alike and I continue to have many learning lessons as I have the past year. So I have added some to the following year ago post and I challenge you all to enter your posts to the challenge page as well. (Add "I love my profession because" in your tag line and it'll show up on the page with all past and current posts.)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I worked for a Family Law Attorney for many years. Divorces, Child Custody, Temporary Restraining Orders, Adoptions, and personal problems. I worked for a program for many more years teaching classes, writing grants, admin and you name it ...I did it. And...listening to more of other peoples problems that I got sucked into.
Real Estate was a career I thought was unattainable during my younger years. My mom passed Real Estate School and did not pursue it further. My dad lasted two weeks and quit because "it was a totally different language".  My self esteem was rotten when I was younger and I always thought "I was not good enough".
I finally reached a point in my life where I was burnt from saving the world. Tired. Drained. When I was sitting and wondering what I would do next my husband said, "Why don't you just do what you always talk about". Right then went into the Real Estate Industry. And look at me now!
I love my profession because:
  • It still allows me to help others ...yet keep my boundaries (hooray!)
  • There is never a dull moment......there are continuous changes and learning lessons and that is what I excel at. Learning.
  • We have to abide by a Code of Ethics and it gives our industry structure.
  • I am working in Hawaii and it is surely a joy to work around such scenic treasures for the eye to behold!
  • I can now take care of myself too ...instead of taking care of others and neglecting myself.
  • I have the choice to structure my daily schedule around me. .... and it allows me to keep a balanced life.
  • I love going through the transaction and keeping it fine tuned with all the little details to complete and follow up on. (I get off on that)
  • It allows me to be me with no acting on a stage. No puppeteering or commanding and it is my business and how I conduct myself is with the pride I have in the service I give.
  • real estate industryIt is an industry I take great pride in supporting. It's challenging and exciting and keeps me on my toes.
  • I love meeting new clients and conforming as a chameleon would to different personalities, situations and circumstances. ...and the rewarding part is when a client tells me they appreciate all I'm doing.
  • I have the ability to work as a team with other agents, loan officers, escrow officers, home inspectors and whoever is involved in the transaction to make it a smooth transaction. (it doesn't always turn out smooth but I sure try!)
  • I also have the ability to know when too much is too much and have the resources to take on more help. ....I believe in giving my clients quality attention.
  • A closed deal means everyone is happy and we all have done a great job.
  • Every transaction brings new learning lessons....and I love learning more. It never stops in real estate.
  • First time homebuyers appreciate me walking them through step by step. I don't believe in keeping them in the dark.
  • I love helping other agents and new agents. I remember what it was like to walk into a totally different world.
  • I have met so many professionals in this field. And the majority of them are super nice and have been helpful as well.
  • I love working in my office part time too so I can be around Real Estate FULL time. And again, I support our agents.
  • When I run into a snag with a transaction I can get MANY opinions because there are a bunch in my office that extend a helping hand too. In fact, I like to get a couple of opinions because no two answers will be alike.
  • Century 21 Liberty Homes is where we are all "family". In Hawaiian we call it "Ohana". My brokers and our agents are all comfortable with each other and we all help each other out and it helps when you have that commaraderie going on.
  • I know that the market fluctuates and I have to change with the ups and downs and that's okay with me. And moreso now than ever....a closed transaction is surely rewarding for me because I know that all I have learned is paying off now.
  • My husband has fully supported from day one because he sees how rewarding it is for me when he sees a smile on my face. Family support has a big impact on why I love my profession too. Sometimes others can see us better than we can see ourselves. When we're happy our family is happy. :)
  • My dad was proud of me accomplishing something he did not. My dad was proud of me and got to experience his little girl doing something I was good at....before he passed away.
  • My mom is proud of me and it feels good when she calls me to ask me something. I love my profession.
  • Because I'm REALLY good at it. I believe that I do everything in a professional manner and in the end......I sleep very well at night.
  • *It led me to Active Rain* ......where Ohana is here as well. Where there's an abundance of information, help, support, friendship and a bunch of caring professionals all in one place.
And there are surely a lot more reasons ......but the main one is that at this time in my life.....
     It fit neatly into my life like the last piece of the puzzle.
It's personal and professional success.
I love Real Estate because it allows me to meet people, I love meeting and getting to know
all kinds of people. I used to be a 21 dealer in Las Vegas for 20 years. I was always meeting
new and interesting people. Social events and functions is my favorite was to prospect
and this job fits with that perfectly. I am always learning, challanged, and fullfilled by
the deal. What a great way to spend a day.
Sally - Sounds like a great idea for another round of Active Rain Tag.  Get it started, and have everyone add a copy to THIS GROUP ...set up for "Playing In The Rain!"
Tag and Me Me's are great for this group as people can keep up with what everyone else writes rather than hoping to find one by mistake...as long as everyone posts a copy there!!!
Sounds somewhat like me, I was a school social worker, and just didn't want to go back to it. There are many teachers and social workers that end up in Real Estate, it is still a helping profession. I love Real Estate because there is an ending to each transaction, whereas in social work, many times you just don't get to see the results. Nice post, Sally!
Sally - there are few occupations in the world where we can truly make a difference in our clients' lives - and I think real estate is one of them. If we can put them in a home that "feels right", it can make all the difference in the rest of their lives.
p.s. - without real estate, I would never have met you.
Sally - Before real estate I managed a bowling center and came in contact with people all day long so the choice to go into real estate was easy because I loved serving people.  I have never been so fulfilled and rewarded as I do in this profession not to mention getting to have the "best friends" in the world here in Active Rain. :-)
Hi Sally - I love the incredible variety in a day of real estate work, the never-ending opportunities when you may least expect it, and there is never a dull moment.  If things are slow, that time can always be used to increase business through new avenues that are ever expanding, like here in the Rain.  Wonderful post!
Thanks for reBlogging (is that an actual term?) this great list.  We have very similar stories and absolutely the same reasons for being in this business.  Yesterday a listing agent was worried that I would not get a bonus that was offered to be in contract by a certain date due to attorney holidays this week and last.  I really had to think was I that upset about it?  No I am just happy that my buyers are going to get a great house for lees than I thought it would ever go for.  I guess I am called a fool by some but the reward of their happiness means more to me.  BTW, don't let my husband read this, I don't think he would understand.
I got into Real Esate because my Realtor was horrible when I bought my first home and thought that this business needed more Good Realtors in it! I loved going to Open Houses so why not have one of my own, I am a people person and love to talk - so why not talk to people about what I love to do, go into homes and check out decorating ideas and really get to a know how people live - it's very interesting sometimes! I love establishing relationships and honestly becoming good friends with my clients - is the best reward of all! Money comes and goes but friends are forever!
Just like the song "My Favorite Things", I need to remind myself sometimes why I love my profession so much.
I wonder if I could actually put it to song:
...Rate drops on interest,
and pre-approved buyers.
Bright sunny houses & colorful fliers,
Little cell telephones with custom rings.
These are a few of my favorite real estate things.
I love my Real estate career because secretly deep inside part of me wanted to be a psychologist and instead of sitting people on a couch and listening to their issues for 45 minutes, I drive them around while they do it, and end up making more than if I would have chosen psychology as a major... the best part is being able to know enough about them that you can even include a lot of them in your circle of friends afterwards.. . It has also opened up the doors to the global world, whom I love. Real estate has made it easier to meet wonderful people from different parts of the world,
  • Century 21 Liberty Homes is where we are all "family". In Hawaiian we call it "Ohana". My brokers and our agents are all comfortable with each other and we all help each other out and it helps when you have that commaraderie going on.
  • What a great office that must be! When I have my own brokerage, I hope I can create that kind of enviornment......unlike where we are today! Thanks for reminding me why I love what I do!
    Thom and Ray Team: I love our 'family' and when you have that and a job you love.....and clients that appreciate...it makes it all worthwhile :)
    There is not a day in my life where I don't love to be a Realtor.
     I view my sales results as a reflection of my dedication and commitment to providing the best service possible while working with each of my clients. Success, I believe, is not in the number of deals I close, but in the way I deal with my clients. Because my success truly is my clients success.
    I too love my profession - but it's because I stopped being a Realtor and started helping Realtors all over the U.S. and Canada realize their dreams.
    For nearly 20 years I enjoyed the daily give and take, meeting new people, and even the problem solving that went with finally being an owner/broker. But after about 15 years I realized what I loved the most was the challenge of reeling new buyers and sellers in to our agency. Writing the promotions had become my first love.
    Now, I get to learn about the real estate market from one end of the country to the other, and even learn how real estate is practiced in other countries. (I've been amazed at times!)
    Best of all, I get to help agents realize what is special about their service, and show them how to present it to the public in ways that earn them more and bigger commissions. Helping other people succeed is definitely a nice way to spend a day.
    And all this without burning even a gallon of gasoline! I kind of miss having an excuse to buy new clothes, but working in sweats is a fair trade.
    We who have found work we love are the fortuntate members of society - and I wish that same good fortune on every soul, be it real estate or writing or any other job under the sun. Loving work is loving life.
    Celeste, there is nothing like doing what you love and love what you are doing. I can't imagine being in a job that I hate. This is wonderful and so fulfilling. I too love helping people and the best part is seeing their eyes light up when they fall in love with their future home. We are so lucky to have found our calling.
    Marte: That's a fact! No matter what your profession...if you love it and enjoy it then that is what matters.
    Gena: I used to be in jobs where it was draining and no one appreciated what I did. Too much complaining :) I found my calling when everything else was not working....and it was a time in my life where I knew it had to be something I could enjoy the rest of my life.
    Sally - Thank you.  Posts like this just re-affirm why we do what we do.  We love people.  We love helping and making a difference in the lives of those we come across.  If we entered this industry with profit as the only goal, we probably are not very successful or happy with what we do.  Each day brings new challenges.  I like to look at these as opportunities to learn and grow.
    Thanks Sally for reminding me, and obviously a lot of others, why we stay in the business and why we started in the first place.
      I too was a Social Service burnout , even though I loved my clients.  I still get to serve others, but as you said the boundaries are so much easier to keep clear.  I am with you on your list and do wish my folks could have enjoyed my love of the business, before they passed away.
      You were a refreshing breath of Aloha in Ca. and I agree, the community does seem like Ohana!
    Aloha from California, Real Estate still is a great profession, as long as we have professionals that care.
    Some days I love it, some days I like it and some days I hate it but basically, it has served me well. I love the freedom to set my own hours, I love not sitting at a desk all day, I like meeting and helping new people who I hope to call friends, and I hate it when a deal falls through. All in a day's work.
    Thanks for the post.
    Kevin: Wonderful breakdown of why we who love the industry do what we do. :)
    Rosellen: You are so right...the more and more I 'get to know' some members....the more I find that many have worked in the social or nursing field or something similar. I guess that's one of the reasons some are so good at what they do ;)
    Celeste, I love my profession too...my #1 reason would be the look on a buyers face when they walk through the door of "THIS IS THE ONE!!" property. Nothing beats that feeling, this helps me ignore the few downers I find occasionally.
