Back in January of 2007' I wrote a post that focused on the Success of the Husband and Wife Realtor Team.  The post was all about how my husband and I have worked together to be a successful team.  Recently my husband, Bob, took a fall while out for some exercise on his bicycle.  The fall seemed somewhat minor and he never even mentioned the fall to me.  Weeks later he ended up having surgery on what turned out to be a broken thumb.  Some might think "no big deal", how bad can a broken thumb be?  Normally a broken thumb might not be such a big deal except for the fact that it was his right thumb and well you guessed it - he's right handed!Thumbs Up

Since I have received messages from other couples considering going into the Real Estate business together, I thought that a follow up to this post was in order.  One of the points I listed in my old post was to determine who does what.  My husband is the technical strength of our Realtor team but when he broke his thumb, working on the keyboard became very difficult and even painful.  In addition to his limited keyboard access, he lost his ability to drive (doctor's orders).

Think about all the things you use your right hand for in the Real Estate business.  How many hands do you shake a day?  How many times do you have to juggle keys and listings while opening doors and showing homes?  What about answering phones and writing down notes while talking to a customer.  An exercise to try to illustrate this dilemma is to hold your right hand behind your back as you go about your business and you will see what it would be like.

The biggest point is patience with your partner and picking up the slack when they need you.  Bob and I will be celebrating our 17th wedding anniversary in a few weeks.  Working together has been a true test of how much we really respect and care for each other.  I guess that is the most important thing to consider when embarking on working together with your spouse.  That's what makes for the Success of the Husband and Wife Realtor Team!

Lisa:  Congratulations on your success together both in life and business!  My hubby and I work together as well and absolutely LOVE it!  Of course, he's my best friend so, that makes it all the easier to accomplish common goals but, there is alot of give and take and you DO have to be receptive to the other's ideas.

It's nice to hear a true 'couple' success story!

Lisa--Obviously you two know how to make it work! Good for you!! :)My husband and I had batted around the idea of becoming a real estate team...We are a team but he is theunlicensed member of the business...handling the website and putting in signs for me. More of a supporting role and I think most successful real estate professionals have family support. Congrats on your upcoming 17th! That is something to celebrate!

Lisa;  Karen and I have been a real estate team for 33 years.  When we first started we were told it wouldn't work and we'd ruin our marriage.  Our primary website is under her name - she's more photogenic. For 15 years I was the team leader - Karen has been for the last 18.  Congrats on your anniversary - we just completed 39 See KAREN KRUSCHKA  Art

Hi Debe,

Thank you for your kind comment.  And congrats to you and your husband as well.  It can be a very rewarding experience to work with your spouse, especially if they are your best friend.  Best wishes to you both!

My husband and I are a team and own the office together. We butt heads sometimes on how to do things, but I don't know anyone I would rather work with.

Congratulations on 17 years.  My husband has thought about getting a real estate license.  When he does, we do plan on forming a team.  I will have to go back and read your Part 1.

Congratulations on the two of you working together, David and I do our home inspection business together.  I often tease people and tell them, the more David & I are together the better we are, it's when we get to going 2 different ways and don't see each other is when trouble starts.  This was a great decision for us.

Hi Leslie,

I believe butting heads is a part of any normal relationship.  We also butt heads now and then but in a loving relationship, you pick your battles and in the long run things work.  Thanks for your comment and all the best to you in your team efforts.

Hi Bonnie,

We absolutely agree!  Everyone has to know themselves and pick the situation that works best for them.  Congrats on your own happy team!

17 years?  WOW!  Congrats!  Mike and I are celebrating 3 years next week!  That's just a blink for you guys.  It was horrible when he was in a cast a few years ago on his right hand... he learned how to use the mouse lefthanded, but his handwriting never came out good.
