Grand Central Parkway, Queens County, New York

On my way to hang out with the hard hats at Shea Stadium I got stuck in traffic and found myself wondering what on earth was going on. Lots of fire trucks were converging on an area ahead of me and traffic ground to a halt. By the time I rolled up on the drama it was evident that a lot of destruction had taken place. I found myself hoping that no one had died in this incident and put my camera away. I couldn't take any more pictures when I finally saw what had happened...

It made me think about my kids who usually accompany me almost everywhere I go. I would be devastated if something bad ever happened to them on the road. When I picked Stephen up from school today I brought him his favorite treat, chocolate covered M&M peanuts. We went on a community walk and played in the grass during lunch. That accident put a lot of things in perspective for me. Being able to hug my son and watch him eat M&Ms was a very precious moment... I am going to try and not complain about anything for the rest of the day.

Don't take your days for granted, people. You never know how many of them you have left... Enjoy your day.

Hi C ... How true!  Accident scenes are always very disturbing... it's that one minute you're here; next minute you're gone aspect that gets to you.  There but for the grace of God, go I ....

HI CTS - I hope they are ok (quick prayer).  It sometimes takes those kinds of moments to jerk you back into the reality of how quickly things can & sometimes do, change.  KM

Carolyn ~ Absolutely! It's scary how fast some of these accidents happen though!  When my son was going for his permit, it really made me be more aware and patient when I am driving behind someone (it could be someone else's teen just learning how to drive or a new license holder).

Marie, very well said...

Pam, I agree with you 100%.

KM, very true. I found myself wondering why I even bothered to gripe to a couple of girlfriends this morning after I realized I was still here and I could try to change what needs to be changed in my life.

Fran, words of wisdom can never be stressed enough... we sometimes forget when we are struggling with other issues that distract us from what is truly the most important things in life.

Kathy, I know what you mean. I've been trying not to let people aggravate me with their crazy driving habits. It's easier said that done, though...

Carolyn, I always say a little prayer when I head out in the car "Keep me safe, oh Lord".  These terrible accidents we witness or see on the news can be pretty heart stopping.

Shirley, I am thankful that this one didn't leave me with nightmares like a previous accident did. There was a really bad one where the car started flipping on the Jackie Robinson Parkway. It burst into flames and we were all helpless to watch these people burn inside. It smelled like Hades had opened a door. There was something very evil in the air. It creeps me out just thinking about it... I felt as if that car was surrounded by demons. So many people called for help like crazy. There was nothing we could do. I cried like a baby... I couldn't stay there, I had to leave. I thought about that when I saw all of the fire trucks responding to the scene. I have to say that I am very glad I did not take any more pictures. Some things just need to be respected and not publicized. Tragedy is tragedy...

C - it is sad that sometimes it takes an incident like this to make us remember to appreciate what we have today. I am glad that you took the time to be with your son. We all need to keep what's really important at the top of our to do lists.

My Hubby is a truck driver and has been first on the scene several times.  Anymore everyone needs to have a little first aid or CPR training.  You never know when it may be you that needs to help.  cw

C- You know, this post hit home with me.  September 7th 2005, I got a phone call and two of our three children had been in the car to the left on their way to school.  It resulted in a broken ankle for Colin and two hand surgeries for Abigail.  It was without doubt the most traumatic day of my life.

That day I was lucky to still have my children.  They healed.  I learned a lesson that I will have with me always.  I always say I love you... And I talk to my parents and my children every single day.  Family is always at the top of my list.  Thanks for this post.  It could serve as a reminder to someone who will be very glad they read it and made that effort to say I love you, be careful.

Hi C- I think sometimes we see these things to put everything back in perspective.  The really bad ones stick with us forever.  I have certain places that now matter how many years later I pass I still see the accident in my mind.  It does make us appreciate things more.  I am glad you were just stuck in traffic.  Hug the boys for me.

Tammy, I have been remiss in telling my kids that I love them every day. Sometimes we take for granted that people know, but it is nice to actually tell them. :-)

Deb, I know what you mean. Right now I should be driving Stephen to school but instead I'm sitting at my computer watching him sleep and enjoying the quiet. We'll go in a little bit late. I just want to enjoy the Minion Blur sleeping. :-)
