It is not often where I have felt that I received exemplary service from either a telephone company or a cable company but this last week here in Spring TX we signed up with the new AT&T U-Verse and I am so impressed with the product and the service we have received.
As we already had our DSL with AT&T they contacted us a few months ago about the U-Verse. We discussed it but decided to just stick with what was working. The service sounded nice but every time we have tried to make a cable, Internet or phone change it has turned in to a nightmare scenario. Had Hurricane Ike not happened we probably would not have been the first on our block to give it a try but as it turned out during Ike our phone lines never went down. I was actually the envy of the neighborhood because when we were running our generator I had Internet. Now the cable was another story; we were a full two weeks without cable. After our great telephone experience we decided to give the U-verse a try.
We made our appointment and were given a 2 hour window on a specific day. The day prior to our appointment someone called to reconfirm. A half hour before the 2 hour window was to start the technician called to let me know he would arrive within 20 to 30 minutes. When he arrived he told me it could just take a few hours or there were times when it took a few days. As it turned out we didn't have one of the easiest houses so he was here for several hours. He got the Internet up and running first and then he hooked each television up. Each television has its own remote and they each had to be programmed. He even went the extra mile and hooked up both of my children's room's even though one of the receiver's is going to be floating between the two rooms at the moment. I told him how frustrated I usually got with customer service so before he left he gave me the phone number for second tier support should I have a problem. He was a young technician but took his job seriously.
The first day was okay although my computer seemed a little sluggish. The next day I was getting a blue screen on the television in our bedroom. I'm not a big television watcher so that was not a big deal but that sluggish computer was getting to me. I called the support line and was on hold for a short time and went straight through to Ricky. I couldn't believe it I'm use to pushing a jillion buttons and NEVER making it to a person. Ricky was in Wisconsin (not India) and she was so knowledgeable. She helped me clean my Vista machine up and in short order I was up and running with a fast connection. Before I got off the phone I told her I had a television problem. She tells me that yes while she was helping me with the internet she ran our televisions and could see that one of them was not getting a signal. WOW, now that is technology. She asked if I would like to set a time for a technician to come out and look at it. I'm thinking she will say something like they can come out a week from Thursday but she says we have an opening at 8:00 to 10:00 in the morning or 10:00 to 12:00. Now that is what I call service.
The next morning the technician called me when she was about 20 minutes away. As it turned out the one television had a defective power cord that was causing the problem. She was in and out in just a few minutes. How in the heck they can tell something is not right from Wisconsin is beyond me but I LOVE TECHNOLOGY.
So far I have talked about the service I received and have not even told you about the product. We have a receiver for each television but they are all tied together. We can record on the DVR on our main television and watch it on all the other televisions. We can also rewind an hour back if we don't change stations. I'm finding this great for news in these turbulent times but this would also work great for you sports fans. If I start recording a show 20 minutes in to the show this will record the entire show; that's right my missing 20 minutes will be there. I have not learned all the features and they are going to be constantly upgrading the features but I'm pleased so far. Oh, and one last thing the PICTURE IS FANTASTIC!!
It is a breath of fresh air to see a large telephone company looking out for the needs of the consumer like they did. The way they treated me is the same I try to treat my customers and I LOVED IT!! I have to admit I have not always been thrilled with the service I have received from AT&T; especially those times I couldn't get past the machine to talk to a person. Shoot one time I got so frustrated I said a swear word (not even a bad swear word) but the machine hung up on me because of it. I was expecting a nightmare and was in for a TOTALLY pleasant surprise with the service I received.
Hopefully this exemplary level of service will continue. To be quite honest after years of mediocre service from these big companies I'm still a little skeptical. I can tell you this if this quality of service continues they will have a customer for life.
This is a fairly new service but if you go to their website you can check to see if the service is available in your area. I was telling my Dad how great it was but then checked on it for him and found out it is not available in Denver or Phoenix yet. Another feature they have is that you can leave your address on their website and they will contact you when U-verse makes it to your neighborhood.
