Walkable neighborhoods. Matthews NC comes to mind when I am asked to name a small town near Charlotte NC that has neighborhoods within walking distance of the downtown area. I define a walkable neighborhood as one that is within one mile of town or community amenities and that has sidewalks or trails that provide a way to reach those destinations. Matthews has a number of community destinations within its downtown area and several walkable neighborhoods near downtown.

Is is easy to walk to downtown Matthews NC?
The Town of Matthews has had a long-standing policy of building sidewalks to connect all of the neighborhoods within the town. Most of the older neighborhoods were built without sidewalks internally but because most neighborhoods are a series of cul-de-sacs, neighborhood streets are quiet and easy to walk.
The Four-Mile Creek Greenway will soon be under construction around some of the neighborhoods near downtown Matthews. The Greenway will have over two miles of paved trails and boardwalks with connectors into adjoining neighborhoods. Matthews residents will be able to walk or bicycle around the downtown area when greenway construction is complete.
