Are you "BFF’s" with your cell phone? A story of the "passing" of my cell phone..sniffle

By
Services for Real Estate Pros with Malfi Marketing Solutions ~ for real estate professionals

Do you treat your cell phone like it's your best friend (forever) "bff" or even better?  Does it go everywhere you go and you would actually turn around in your car, even if you were an hour away, to go back and get it because you couldn't survive the day without it?

No, this is not my usual post about marketing, just something funny that happened to me recently, that I'm sure someone out there can relate to.

First though, some interesting facts that I think may blow your mind:

October 13th marked the 25th Anniversary of the first commercial wireless call.   On October 13, 1983 the first call was made from Soldier Field on the phone in the picture on the left.

Some interesting things to note about the first cell phone and the services offered back then:

  • The phone cost was $3995, it was 13 inches long and weighed 1.75 pounds
  • Service was a whopping $50/month, plus 40 cents a minute during peak times and 24 cents in off peak
  • No free minutes existed
  • In it's first year, there were 12,000 subscribers(Verizon now has 68.7 million subscribers)
  • As of June, 2008, there are  262.7 million wireless subscribers (46% of them are ages 8-12 - our kids all have one)

So the cell phone has not only "liberated" people from the phones in our homes and offices and but has become a source of information, entertainment and networking.

I thought with the recent anniversary of the cell phone just passing that I would share my own personal experience with the "passing" of my cell phone.

So, I finally took the plunge - actually my old cell phone did - yes, it got submerged in a glass of water this past week (don't ask) and I was forced to upgrade from my little flip phone that I loved so much (I'm a simple person at heart.)  I guess I had fought it for long enough and this was a sign.

Yes, I loved my little cell phone - it was simple to carry, I couldn't hit the buttons and make a call by mistake and I guess I just loved the whole idea of it being easy

So, here I am, up with the technology and embracing my new Blackberry.  I can finally leave my laptop in my office and carry all of you and your wonderful messages with me no matter where I am.

Yes, I miss my little phone - it was good to me - always letting me get in touch and be in touch with my loved ones and colleagues.  But now I have a new BFF (sorry phone #1) and we are getting to know one another and hopefully it will provide just as much as you did and I will be more careful this time around water.

While this is not one of my typical marketing posts, don't stop here - read some of my other blogs for some more and hopefully helpful information and tips.  Even better, call me on my new cell phone - lol.  Just don't give me crickets which sometimes happens when I do posts that are not related to work.

Feel free to share your "nightmares" with your cell phone or just enjoy some cell phone facts and maybe even laugh at my stupidity and my expense.

AMM - No crickets here girl!  I love my BB (who is also my BFF).  I tried switching to a centro or  treo but COULDN'T get used to the windows based or whatever they call it.  BB is just EASIER!  which makes sense to me.  Thanks for those OLD stats on the cell phone.  I was 13 when the first one came out.  I remember my dad being the savvy real estate broker he was, using the old phone you have pictured.  We all thought he was SO COOL!  Well, he was BUT if he used it today we for sure wouldn't!  KM

Lewis - This is so true - they're not easy to carry and that it wasn't compact like my other phone was a reason I stayed away.

John - Thank you for the funny comment my Bostonian friend - (I'm originally from there too) and you said it with the sarcastic humor that I love and adore like only a true Bostonian can say.

Ellie  and Sylvie - I do miss the smallness of the phone and I know what you're saying.  It does take discipline to not always be working and I do have rules that it stays in the office and charges over night - I just like that I can be on the road and get messages especially if away from the laptop for long - I get emails from school and my husband who travels every week.  Again, you must have rules for your phone.

Barry - LOL - thank you for the great laugh!

Gary & Melynda - isn't it funny - I think I was in my late 20's when I got my first - I was so behind the times - now my daughter has one at age 10 - but is involved in a lot and needs to be able to reach me to say ok come pick me up.  They sure have come a long way - my first one was HUGE.

Kristen - hello my friend - LOL  I am still getting used to the buttons - I used to be able to text so fast and now my husband said - what took you so long to respond? LOL  I would say so that your dad wouldn't look to cool nowadays with one of those old phones.  You kill me.  Hope you enjoy wearing your new Uggs - still don't have any myself - my daughter loves them.

Anne Marie, I just got the Blackberry curve and love it.  I know it does 100 things I don't know , but I am totally addicted to it.  I love it.  Besides it is pink, my favorite color :)

Anne, like you I was hesitant to convert but when my flip phone died I went to a new HTC phone with a full slideout keyboard on an HTC Mogul from Sprint with the $99 unlimited plan(less than what I was paying) and I now have unlimited texting, email, 3G internet and it's all microsoft and works with my Exchange server.  You'll love not needing a computer 24/7!

I was a film producerin 1983  and OF COURSE we had to have one of the first cell phones. We would be out in the middle of a field somewhere and the President would call the Director about a bid...that was the beginning of the end of being able to get away from it all!

I reluctantly gave up my favorite flip phone which had been washed in the washing machine, came out, dried and still worked great (except the 5 key sometimes got stuck) but it was so easy to hold in my hand. I used it far longer than needed, could have upgraded years ago. Now I have a Treo and it's nice but I do miss that phone!

Hi Audrey - I'm just like you - I can't figure out how to do anything on this complicated phone - text messaging is quite the chore and I may never figure it all out - as long as I can make calls and get emails while away from the office - I'm good.  I had the option of going for color but opted for the silver.

Garren - I was scared of that slide phone - I don't know why.  That's great that you could get such a great deal too - I was quite pleased with my deal as well - so affordable.  Yes, I think I'm going to love not having to bring my laptop everywhere.

Hi Sharon - Wow - I have to say I'm shocked that your phone survived the washing machine.  Mine was on in water for seconds and I couldn't turn it on, see the screen and lost all my numbers :(  I agree - I used mine far too long but I loved it.  Thank you for sharing and hope to see you again.

Lisa - LOL - I guess I'm new to the lingo - never heard of crackberries.

Hi Scott - Yes, I love new technology and love new cars - sometimes some of these things are so complicated to learn though - I like simple - I like knowing I can pick something up and just use it or get in a car and know how to turn the lights or windshield wipers on - if I can't find something - it's very frustrating. LOL

Anne Marie... I have a TREO 700, and couldn't exist without it.  In fact, the occasional day, when I accidentally leave the house without it, I must turn around and get it... even if that means being late.  I feel totally naked without it (and that ain't a purty sight).

I remember that first Soldier Field phone (as a Chicagoan, I thank you for not adding an "S" to that and making it Soldier's Field)... it was affectionately known as "the brick", and was attached by a curly wire, to a battery pack that you wore, like a purse.  Calls were expensive (40¢ a minute was a lot of money back then), and you had to stand near the window to use it.

Ahh, those were the days.

Anne Marie- One day about four years ago I was taking my laundry out of the washing machine and there at the bottom of the wash tub was his cell phone.  OOOPS.  But it was recommended to me by a motorola employee to take it all apart and put it on top of the refrigerator for two days.  I did.  Then we put it back together and it started back working.  To this day that little phone still works.

On the other hand when my daughter dropped hers in a cooler... no such luck.  She goes through about 2 a year.  I guess someone has to keep the company in business with all these free minutes these days.

And Anne Marie- I have an off topic question for you??? Are you native to PA?  you remind me of a friends' sister with your same given name.

I always have resistance to getting a new phone, and usually only do it, once I HAVE to...like the old one just doesn't work anymore....I think we resist because of the learning curve involved with a new phone....I have a blackberry, and yes, have become addicted to it....

Alan - I hear you - I would drive back too and I have!  LOL - well I don't know about that - I only see the Elvis pic so I'll have to take your word.  You're welcome for the no "s" too.  Can you imagine using the brick now especially men looking like they were carrying a purse?  LOL now that would be funny.  Thank you for stopping by to comment and I look forward to more chat with you.

Tammy - I can't believe your phone survived.  Not sure if you heard about this trick - but they suggested I put my phone in a bag of rice including the battery to see if it would dry out - no such luck :(  LOL - about your daughter going through 2 a year - some of us are very rough on our phones - me included. Re: off topic - no, actually I am not - I'm a native Bostonian and my accent is present at times.  I do have a SIL with the same name in Pittsburgh - perhaps the friend?  Let me know - now I'm curious.

Pat - I agree with you and I put up a good fight for as long as I could but the water won!  It can be addicting and I'm trying to maintain balance and discipline - luckily I'm still figuring things out so have not become addicted yet.

You DO realize, Anne Marie, that they meant a bag of UNCOOKED rice... right?  Uncooked rice is a natural dessicant, and would draw the water out of the phone.

Putting your phone in a bag of COOKED rice, would make your phone only capable of dialing Chinese restaurants.

Hey Alan and Barry

Are you two making fun of me? - Yes, I may be blonde but I know not to cook the rice!  LOL - I can take it - luckily I love laughing at myself and don't mind you poking fun at me either - actually, I rather like it!  Thanks for the laugh and be careful I could come poking at you! I would never, never do that. My wife is a blonde so Ihave learned that blondes are the most intelligent people on the earth.

Now I have another question. Do you know where I can get a large tub? I dropped my TV in the pool and I need to get some rice and................................

Have a great week end :)

I remember that my first mobile phone was for the car.  It was huge and weighed a ton.  But alas, all good things come to an end.  I miss the old black rotary phones - simpler times indeed.
