"Recall the face of the poorest and the weakest man whom you may have seen and ask yourself if the step you contemplate is going to be of any use to him. Will he gain anything by it? Will it restore him to a control over his own life and destiny? In other words, will it lead to self-reliance for the hungry and spiritually starving millions? Then you will find your doubts and your self melting away."

- Mahatma Gandhi

These are my babies, my daughter and nephews.

I cannot imagine having to look into any of these faces and say, "I'm sorry, baby, we don't have anything for dinner tonight."

"I'm sorry baby, we don't have any apples left for snack."

"I'm sorry baby, we just don't have anything for your empty tummy."

"I'm sorry baby..."

I have tears in my eyes even thinking of it.  I cannot imagine how powerless that would feel.  I cannot imagine not having enough.  Yet it happens.  I found this statistic at JustHarvest.org:

In 2006, in the United States, 4% households (4.6 millions households) experienced hunger, which is a 3.9% increase from 2005.

And, as we know, it is even worse in many other countries.

I wrote a blog when I found out that my local crisis center ran out of food and had to close their doors on a Tuesday.  I cleaned out my cupboards.  I felt really bad that I don't do more on an ongoing basis.  I realized that I have too much.  I realized that I only need enough.

Another quote from Gandhi comes to mind:

"You must be the change you want to see in the world."

I am making a vow right now to live on enough.  I am making a vow to survive on what I have in my cupboards and freezer before I buy more.  I am making a vow to share my grocery budget with those who don't have enough.  I am making a vow to start shopping for enough. This is something I can do.  I have this power, and if I do not use it I cannot look at myself in the mirror.  ENOUGH.

What can you do?  What is within your power today?

Chris I couldnt agree with you more. Just the thought of having to tell my 3 babies (well not babies anymore but to me they will always be) that we have nothing to eat is upsetting. All we all need is just enough, so why not help others in need. Your a great individual, very thoughtful and caring. Don't ever change who you are chicky!

Chris, So well put!  We don't need so much, we need enough--to get by, be happy and help others. There is no feeling like it!

I bought and brought a (Prius-sized) trunk full of food to the Monument Crisis Center on Monday, and I was happy to the place for now well full of food.  (Including palates of ramen as I hope a last resort).  Thanks for helping get the word out!

Carole - Thank you.  Sometimes I just need a kick in the behind to get me back on track and the crisis center running out did it.

Elizabeth - I know you did and thank you so much!  Yes, let's hope the Ramen is a last resort!  I think we've all been on the Ramen diet when we were low on funds.

Elizabeth Nieves - I do know and LOVE that about you.  It just really struck me when cleaning out my canned goods that I wouldn't even miss these things.  I need to give more and hoard less!

Lori - You are so special too!  I know you're always working to help others and I really appreciate that.

Chris, this is a very inspiring post. Thank you. I wrote about a local organization that helped my son when he was sick. I will forever be grateful and indebted to them. Thanks for this beautiful inspiration. It says it so well and I am moved to follow your lead.

Chris, ending poverty has always been a very important cause for me.  I grew up very poor, and as a single parent, I cried many nights wondering if I could provide for my child... and I have not stopped helping others, whether locally or across the planet.  We no longer buy gifts at my house.  My son and I donate what we would otherwise be spending on gifts for each other, and we buy food for a needy family, or give to the Food Bank.

Today I bought 4 chickens and 2 roosters - they will provide for families (they will hopefully lay lots of eggs and make more chickens).  I do what I can, but buying animals, instead of just giving money or food, is a gift that keeps on giving.

Feed a family - buy an animal

In case the above link doesn't work:

We can each do something to help - no matter how small or large our gift.
Enough is right.

Jeanean - I will read about the organization that helped your son.  As you know, that is close to my heart as well.  Thank you for your kind words about my post!

Sylvie - Thank you for the links & information.  I have received that catalog at Christmas time and thought about it.  I can imagine that was very scary for you, worrying about caring for you son.  It's wonderful that you (and your son) are such giving people.

Chris - you are truly an inspiration to us all.

I have a friend that uses the handle "alwaysenuf" as her email address.  I asked her once how she came up with that name ... and her answer was pretty much like your blog.  She had enough - and as long as she had enough then she would share.

Thank you for being such a kind-hearted and giving soul.

Thank you for this post Chris. There are so many people who go hungry in this country and around the world. I have learned that grocery stores are required to throw out "day old bread" rather than giving it to shelters or food pantries because of liability issues. It is my understanding that the stuff they throw out is perfectly fit for human consumption. I learned all this last week when I talked to the store manager of one of our large grocery chains about taking the just expired food the the shelter for them; it wouldn't cost them a cent. I thought it was a great idea, but he said they had to throw it out. What a waste.

Chris:  Wow... it's a picture of your princess daughter... Ms Queen Rhiannon.  And... I just love the term "baby girl."  In fact... when I talk to myself... often when I am feeling either like an only child, or feeling totally like an orphan... in my "self talk" I call myself baby girl.  Thanks for the great post... ( Hi Rhiannon... waving... waving... )

Carol - I love that, alwaysenuf!  I am really going to start living this way.  I really do have more than enough, I really do only need enough.  Thank you for your very kind words!

Rich - It is a good idea, what a shame it can't be a reality.

Karen Anne - Yep, there is Queen Rhiannon & our little princes.  I love "baby girl" too.  Makes you feel loved and cared for somehow.  Rhiannon's waving back!

Chris, great post! When you look at how much you already have and how much other people don't it can change your prospective. There are so many people less fortunate than us but the amazing this is we can all make a difference in our own way.

Thank you Tanya!  Personally, I can become overwhelmed and feel helpless because I can't fix everything.  It helps me to remember that little things make a difference too, so I need to continue to do what I can.  Right now that's the crisis center and taking care of stray cats!

Cheryl - Thank you.  It is amazing how much we waste without realizing it.  It just really hit me when I read about the crisis center running out.
