AmericanTowns is another site you can use in order to direct more readers back to your blog.

AmericanTowns is your local link to the people, issues and activities that matter most in YOUR daily life.

The site is a virtual "town square," plugging you in to the information and resources related to your city, town and neighborhood. Whether it's town issues and community activism or school calendar events and sports schedules, AmericanTowns delivers the info faster and helps you use it better.

Each community/town can use the sites tools to post local events, news and announcements, press releases, take donations, create a web site and more.

Once you are in the site enter your zip code or click on your state to get started.

It has received a $3.3 million round of capital to realize the goal of delivering Hyper local content. The financing comes from Idearc Media, the publisher of the Verizon Yellow Pages and owner of the local search engine, Superpages.com.

So how does the site work and why would you want to use it? The answer is real easy ~ EXPOSURE!! AmericanTowns can help you get that local exposure we all desire. Want a fast, easy and FREE way to communicate with others in your community...and to be found in the search engines?

By adding your Blog posts and creating a business profile you have the opportunity to connect with more people in your market place.

Besides adding your blog, posting local events to an online calender for your town should work well as I have seen many creating these Localism type posts at Active Rain. Here is a screen shot of what the page looks like for my home town of Hopkinton Massachusetts.

Americantowns Hopkinton Massachusetts

When you put an event on your calendar or a news release on your web listing, you can simultaneously post it to the town-wide Calendar and Community Corner areas on the front page of AmericanTowns. All it takes is a few clicks to create your listing.

Americantowns makes it easy for you to let the entire community know about yourself and your company.

Here is a screen shot of what it looks like to have your blog posts included at AmericanTowns. Many of you that read my blog will notice the blog post about my new listing for the luxury home I am marketing at 70 West Elm Street Hopkinton, as well as the Re-blog of Brian Block's post about 5 things sure to turn off a buyer.  Well you can see they are both here at Americantowns as well. Your welcome Brian:)

Hopkinton Community Corner Hopkinton MA

<<<<--------------

You will also notice to the left here that Americantowns also has a feed connection with another favorite site of mine called Topix. Topix is one of my favorite sites on the net for bringing traffic to my blog.

In case you missed my post on this fantastic site and all its benefits here it is again:

Increase your Real Estate blogs readership & SEO through Topix.com

If you use Topix you will also see your posts show up on American towns as well.

Local Events Hopkinton MA

<<<------ Here is a screen shot of what the community calender looks like. It is very simple to add an event. You can also direct the event back to a website or a blog post if you like.

As I mentioned above I see quite a few Active Rain members who enjoy posting events in their respective communities. You can post them here and direct them back to the original source...... YOUR BLOG!

In addition to all of this you are also able to create a profile page about yourself and your company. Here is what Bill Gassett's Americantowns profile looks like. You will notice that you can add links to this page as well!

What else do I like about the site? How about the VIDEO section at the very top of the screen.

Hopkinton Massachusetts Videos

If you send your videos to Youtube via the Real Estate Shows and tag them they will show up here.

You will also notice that Fred Light a Member of AR also feeds his local videos here.

I have written many posts about how to get the exposure LOCALLY that you should be looking for. If you have not seen them some of my favorites include TopixOutside.in  Street Advisor and Yourstreet

These sites will not only bring readers to your blog but most of them should be in your area!

I often get asked which is the best? Personally I like Topix the best for a few reasons. The site is completely "do follow". All your links get followed back to the original source which is what you want. Not only does it help the performance of your blog with an inbound link but it will also deliver a stand alone search result in Google for the topic you post about. Lastly, I know I am getting a fair amount of traffic from it via the tracking service I use.

As a Hopkinton Realtor covering all the towns in Metrowest Massachusetts, I use all these tools in order to increase the exposure for my seller clients online. Now more than ever you need to have an online repetroire designed to maximize the chances of getting your clients a timely sale.

Petra - I believe that Topix is the only site. You can however, request to have your blog feed tied into the site so that you don't have to add posts yourself. I believe the only requirement for this is that you have to link back to them. If you look over in my links section you will see that I have a link to them:)

Bill:  I had signed up some time ago and get weekly e-mails as I use their calendar for information about my area - never thought to post.  So, I have been trying to figure this out for over a half hour now.  I needed a password reset (got it) and then went in to update my profile.  It is not a business profile like yours (once I looked at yours from your post).  So I feel like I am going in circles (between your post and my profile).  Should I have originally created another type of registration - apparently I need help with his.  I am definitely looking to create everything "local" I can and this ia a great post.

Candis after I make a blog post there about 4-5 local sites including topix, yourstreet, ect that I will add my post to. Honestly in total it takes about 20 minutes tops. The twenty minutes is well worth the effort as the back links I am building are huge for SEO. I am getting more and more online business by the week from my blogging efforts. It is all because I come up so high in the search engines. I just got 2 calls today in fact from sellers who are unhappy with their agent and want to interview me. I would never have these opportunities without working on my SEO weekly:)

So Bill, is it spamming to post the same blog on different sites? Like same one on AR, Localism, Topix, Americantowns, etc.? I recently read a blog that only had the first paragraph and then a link back to the original blog in its entirety. Seems like this hasn't been a problem for you but I wanted to be sure...

Also, do you just copy and paste your blogs into the other sites? Thanks!! :) (Maybe a dumb question, newbie here...)

2:59pm • #79
781,899 Points 71 Featured Posts Outside Blog Attended Rain Camp Called Shot Master

Sharon You don't post a blog in it's entirety. You put a snippet with a link to the post. When you are on Topix or Americantowns you would see how to post. It is pretty easy:)

4:20pm • #80

I've been getting emails from them, but wasn't sure if it was worth my time...if you have an AR blog, an outside blog and then one or more of these aren't you duplicating content too much?  Is that a problem?

8:21pm • #81
781,899 Points 71 Featured Posts Outside Blog Attended Rain Camp Called Shot Master

Sonja - When you use another site to add a blog post you don't copy and paste the post to the site. What you do is include a snippet of your post with a link to your blog. This is how you achieve an "inbound" link. It is a method of making your blog stronger in the search engines.

Joan - You sure can! There is no problem but you don't want to post the entire blog. The objective should be to get them to visit your blog. So what you should do is provide a few sentences to let them know what the post is about and then provide a link to your blog. The interface for posting is much like Active Rain.

This is something new in my area but I'm giving it a try.  I'm impressed with what I've seen so far.

Thanks for the sites to check out.  Been on American Towns trying to get set up.  You now have to pay for the type of listing you have :~(  but I did set up the free profile and put contact info w/in the body of that, although I have not yet figured out how I will show up to anyone...I'm thinking the best approach is posting blogs to the site to direct traffic back my way.

I was reading through the other comments here and ran into anchor text.  Do you have a post that explains that?

Thanks for knowing what you're doing and sharing it with the rest of us poor saps!

Bill, I have to admit, I've kept deleting this site.  I thought it was just another site to maintain.  Thanks for changing my mind.  This deserves a gold star!

Bill,

I have registered with AmericanTowns but I don't know how to transfer my blogs to the site.

Can you give a quick overview?

Thank you, Terry Edwards

I would like to have my posts from Active Rain appear on AmericanTowns.  Is there a way to do this without copying and pasting?

Thanks,  Terry Edwards in sunny SC

Hi Terry yes there is. There is a contact form to send them an email and ask them to put your feed on the site. I have my feed posted to multiple towns which is awesome.

Hi Bill; Thanks for the info. I have gotten email from American towns listing the upcoming events in my area and I like it. Looks like I am going to like them a whole lot better.

Any chance of you adjusting your blog so we don't have to scroll back and forth to read it??

Bill - You are a super hero.  I also recommend American Towns, my blog feeds right on the page for my area, it is a very friendly site.  :)  I have noticed my Outside In stuff on page 1 results, too.  These sites are worth the little effort.

Thanks so much.

Another "wasted" evening online doing what Bill says! Ugh! Just kidding, love the advice. I had a profile set up last year on AmericanTowns but never did anything with it. Time to play!

Bill,

I saw this a while back and thought 'what's the catch?' and never really looked into it.  Now my head is spinning at the thought of one more thing to do, but I am so grateful for your sharing this info! ~Julia

Bill - I'm pretty sure you know everything. One of these days I'll have to join more of these networks. I just haven't wanted to start and abandon. I guess it wouldn't hurt to at least establish the "business card" profile on each one. Thanks for keeping up.

Sam - I sure hope not:) Have fun playing!

Julia - No catch. Use the site to drive traffic back to your sites.

Ben - One of the things you can do is request to have your blog feed added and then you don't need to come back and send individual posts.

I hope we get a Canadian version of it soon. So we can get some link juice for our real estate sites too..

This was one of those posts that I actually did. Thanks! I've set up the page (no other agents are using it in my area so it almost looks like it's my own website!) to feature my newsletter, etc.... Thanks again.

Jeff - That is excellent. You will get people visiting the site that will read your blog if you do a good job with it.
