With October not only being Cancer Awareness Month, the 57th anniversary of the debut of I Love Lucy, and Halloween, it's also Black Cat Month.

Please keep an eye out for stray black cats and stupid people doing stupid things to our black furry friends.

Many animal adoption shelters place a moratorium on black cat adoptions during October. They noticed an increase in black cat adoptions prior to Halloween and a return of many of those same black cats after the holiday because "it just isn't working out." In some cases, black cats have been found with their whiskers cut off, paws burned, shaved, and, in one case that I'm familiar with, hanged.

Black cats are not a costume accessory, and animal abuse should be prosecuted and punished to the fullest extent of the law.

Hi Jim, I love cats.  I have three that are indoor pets, but I adopted some ferals (they are tame now).  Tiger was missing for weeks and then turned up minus his tail.  I have no idea what happened, if it was an accident or someone being cruel.

gray catPrincess Yoda, although not black, could not be adopted until after Hallowe'en back in 1999.  Her shelter was withholding all black and gray kitties until November 1st.  She has been a welcome and loving member of our family ever since.

I work with Black Cat Rescue (http://www.blackcatrescue.com) in Boston, MA (USA). I found your post while searching for information about black cat adoption rates.

Black Cat Rescue is a no-kill, all-volunteer network of foster homes dedicated to saving the lives of homeless black cats and kittens by providing them with quality foster care while actively seeking loving, permanent adoptive homes. We are currently seeking new foster homes in the Boston area and thought you might be able to help.
 
Black cats experience lower adoption rates, particularly within kill-shelter environments. For this reason, we're dedicated to assisting individuals and other organizations with the care and adoption of black cats. Fostering has a significant impact on saving the lives of animals.
