Hawaii Gets New Inter-island Jet Service

New jet service for Hawaii interisland travel

It has just been announced that Hawaii is getting additional jet service for inter-island travel. The local commuter airline, Mokulele Airlines has executed an agreement with Republic Airways to operate 4 Embraer 170 jets offering 6 first class and 64 coach seats. After Aloha Airlines passenger service was cancelled due to bankruptcy, fares have gone up and flight availability down so this is welcome news. Current jet service is offered by Hawaiian Airlines and GO Airlines. Neither of those offers first class seating and I question the rationale for Mokulele in providing this for flights that are typically 1/2 hour in duration. Service is to begin November 19.

I flew on Mokulele Airlines for the first time last month and it was most interesting. Their current Cessna single-engine turboprop seats 9 passengers plus 2 crew although my flight had a pilot but no copilot or flight attendant. The front seat is best for would-be pilots because you can watch the pilot fly the aircraft. Although I'm sure it's very reliable, the fact that this aircraft only has one engine and one pilot did give me pause, especially since most of the flight is over the ocean.

Hi Richard - I've never flown on a little plane, the idea sort of scares me. However, I did take a helicoptor tour when I was in Hawaii. I loved it, the sights were incredible and I didn't think twice about it at the time.

Why would you want to fly when you can take the train? oooops. I mean drive. oooops. Alright. Flying it is. Unless there's a boat. Can I take a boat. Flying's too fast. I need to slow down. LOL

Ann - Well you're braver than me if you've been on one of the tour helos which I've never done and don't want to. Kauai had 3 helo crashes last year with some fatalities. Glad you had a safe and enjoyable sightseeing trip. I'm sure they flew you over Kalalau on the North Shore. I used to backpack in there every year and camp for a few days. It's outta sight!

Russel - Well I "drove" from Kauai to Oahu once and yes, it was very relaxing and much less stressful than air travel. But that was the one and only time that the Superferry ran from Kauai. After that, local protesters shut down the operation and it hasn't resumed service to Kauai. It does run between Maui and Honolulu though and it's a great way to travel.

I'm going to wager a guess that those first class seats will always be full. I have never been to Hawaii but I am looking forward to a trip to my neice's wedding in December. I saw the Islands from a plane once between San Francisco and Hong Kong. Must be tough living in Paradise. By the way thanks for commenting on my blog.

I worked on the mainland for 35 years before I could arrange to move to Hawaii and it's indeed a wonderful change. It's nice to hear your first trip is getting close but be careful you don't get hooked on the place as happened to me.

BTW, many generations ago, my last name was DeLaBere, very similar to yours, Aloha to another with french ancestry!
