Even if you don't want to--GO TO YOUR REUNION!

By

Last weekend my sister-in-law called to tell me that my brother did not want to go to their 20 year reunion.  They were high school sweethearts.  She, however, had been long making plans with friends and was very excited about the prospect of catching up with old high school buddies.

high school

They live out of town and had made plans to come and stay with us. We could watch their kids while the went to the different events.

Friday night arrived and they did, too.  My sister-in-law went off with a girl friend to the pre-party party. My brother stayed back with us and made plans to meet up later. He was not enthusiastic about it and there was a 50-50 chance he was not going to go.

He ended up going and had a great time.  When the big party came on Saturday evening, he was ready to don the suit and head out the door.

I feel like many people are reluctant to go to their high school reunions, but I would say GO!  You have nothing to prove. It is a great time with no pressure...you had no plans to see most of these people  ever and you no longer care what they think of you.  You are released from the bondage of your high-school-self and can just be who you have become.

When I went to my reunion, I found it really interesting to see who these friends and frenemies (to coin one of my daughters words) have become.  Some will surprise you.  The really awkward guy in my science class had become a really successful lawyer. The name badges with your senior photo on them are a must-have.  It is fun to look at the hair styles (or for some of the men, the hair that is no longer there) and see how we have all changed.

As I watch my kids navigate high school, I remember how hard it can be.  Your reunion is a chance to see how we all survived, and thrived, in the real world!

A little while ago I went to my ten year and it was a blast!  It was great to see so many familiar faces.  I actually ended up seeing my old physics lab partner and we started dating from there (this was years ago) so I say, yes!  Go!  You NEVER know what will happen.

Great post Holly. I recall my 10 year high school reunion and everyone seemed to act so smiliar to high school. Some people changed but it was quite funny.

I have to agree with you, going to your 20th is a wonderful way to reconnect and it has been wonderful for my family as well. We have a group that gets together for dinners every couple months with all the family. It has been a wonderful experience.

Great advice. Reunions are a wonderful way to meet new people. That's it, new people. We are not the person we were 20 years ago.

There are plenty of people out there who have simply moved on from those days. I keep in touch with a few buddies, and some more via Facebook, but have no desire to see the rest of my class. To each his own.

Holly, I'm coming up on the 30th.. but will take your advice and keep an open mind, who knows it might be fun. I live to far away to make it a day trip so maybe I'll get a nice hotel and if it sucks I'll have a change of scenery either way.

Thanks for the blog......my wife and I have never been to any of ours, but then again, we had very few friends since both of us had moved to town in our junior year.

Thanks for all of your comments...one thing that I did forget to mention. The 10 year is still a little close to high school. Everyone is still trying to figure out who they are at that point--it is not quite as much fun.  By 20 no one cares about high school and it is all just honest curiosity.

My 30 has not come yet but I would say to treat yourself, Steve. Get a nice hotel and indulge yourself.

It is just nice to take note of how far you have come from those days!

I went to mine even though I still keep in touch with and still see all the people I want to from high school. But it was fun to see how my classmates had changed over the years. Time was very kind to some of them...Not so much to others! But when the night was over, I can chalk it up as a good time had.
