I recently returned from Seattle, WA.  The trip was short but full of fun and activity.  The locals are nice and very helpful.  (When I visit from out of state that is the first thing I notice).  The food, shopping, and sights were unmatched compared to other downtown areas I have visited within the US thus far.  It is not a stretch to say it is my favorite.  Not all was perfect, however.

After spending a long day chasing every tourist attraction I could find I decided to give my running shoes a rest.  I wanted to experience the 'good life' for one night.  After doing research on google I made reservations for a restaurant with very good reviews.  Lucky for me it was located just a few miles from downtown.  They indicated breathtaking panoramic views with an upscale atmosphere so I was really looking forward to it.

Upon arrival I was suddenly stricken with a feeling of dejavue (sp?).  It looked like a scene from the movie 'As Good As It Gets'.  Jack Nicholson was walking up the steps and Helen Hunt was sitting inside the bar.  If I were a 'betting' person I would place money on it being filmed there.  Perhaps I will watch that movie again to see if I am right.  If not, it is very similar.  I thought that was 'kinda' fun.

Being from out of town I miscalculated the drive.  We were approximately thirty minutes early.  (No traffic, go figure).  It gave us time to tour the restaurant and compare what the reviews had to say.  They were mostly dead on.  There was jazzy live music playing in the lounge/bar.  The setting was perfect for a romantic evening.  It was a large open space with slightly dimmed lighting. I couldn't wait to 'belly up to the bar' and check out the menu.  I ordered a pomegranate martini because it sounded good.  It wasn't.  Call me spoiled but it was nothing compared to what I have had.  I am of the opinion if you are going to charge that much for a drink there should be more effort put into it than adding 'simple' syrup to vodka.  My husband had a gin martini.  He was happy but consider it was probably the second one he has had in his lifetime.

The seating was impressive to say the least.  Large windows are across the back of the restaurant with views of downtown Seattle.  It sits right on the water's edge.  We probably got the best seats in the house.  The lights reflecting off the water and views of the skyline were amazing!

The experience went down hill from there- I ordered wine.  It was overpriced and awful.  They should have been embarrassed to serve it.  My husband asked, "So what about it do you not like?"  When you take a small sip and the alcohol goes up your nose and makes you squint 'real hard' that is not a good sign.  I asked the waitress to recommend one and described what I was looking for.  She knew nothing about wine but recommended the 'house' wine.  It was even worse.  I wouldn't be complaining if I weren't spending so much...

Apparently the young waitress was overwhelmed by her work load.  The four tables she was serving with a total of nine people was too much for her to handle.  I was a waitress when I was younger so that irritated me.  If we had been at Denny's I would not have given it a second thought.  (No, I didn't work at Denny's).

By the time the appetizers arrived they were room temperature.  You could tell they had been sitting around for a while.  Maybe it wouldn't have been so bad if they hadn't been oysters.  I was disappointed to say the least.  It gets worse.

I wanted to really enjoy the experience so I ordered steak and lobster.  It may have been a little 'over the top' but how many times will I be in Seattle?  Why not enjoy it to the fullest?  Texas is known for having good steaks so I will give them a break on not knowing how to cook one properly.  However, the lobster was nothing to brag about either.  My husband ordered the salmon.  He said it wasn't as good as what I make at home.  "Thanks Dear."

Overall it wasn't a horrible experience.  The atmosphere was good and the company was great.  But for the money I would recommend Ruth's Chris or Chamberlains in Texas.

I am writing this review for two reasons- 1) I want to give a realistic review of this restaurant in google searches.  "No, puking rainbows here."  2) I told them I was going to.

My suggestion is to go there.  Order a beer.  Look out the window and enjoy the band.

The pics are not good quality but you get the idea.

 My new boyfriend Woody.

Pomegranate Martini- What's with the glass?

Gin Martini- Much Better.

What I look like through Tony's eyes after that one Gin Martini!

That's too bad.  It's always MORE disappointing when you go somewhere expecting to be completely woo'd and then no WOO.

It wasn't a complete loss.  I enjoyed most of it.  My expectations were high because of the reviews I read.  The irritating part was the money not well spent.

Hi Melody.  I have been a waiter so I feel for them.  As you know, it is a hard job.

Was your husband jealous of Woody??

Thanks for writing,

Ken

I hate spending lots of money just to be disappointed. What a shame to have such gorgeous scenery and bad service. 9 people give me a break......I haven't been a waitress for years and could still handle that.

Melody- It is very disappointing when our expectations are not met. At least the view was spectacular!

Ken- No.  He is not the jealous type.

Mandi- Exactly!  That is what I was thinking.  The tables were all together so what was the prob?

Lori- Have you been there?  I think you are pretty close, right?

I don't mind spending a few bucks if the place lives up to it's reputation but I'm with you Mel as I will tell everyone when I feel I was ripped off. Did you punch Woody in the nose when you left?

CTS- I think that was the best part.  Well, maybe the band.

Cameron- I don't ask for a lot unless I am spending A LOT!  There is a restaurant near my home that has the BEST food but it is BYOB.  When I go there the service is awesome and the you can get out for less than a week's grocery bill.  I actually wanted to take Woody with me!

April- Those big brown eyes get me every time.

Melody, Somehow I'm not surprised that some of the most beautiful places have some of the worst food---and service.  I usually check Zagats when I'm going to a super pricey place I haven't been to before.  But I loved the pictures---and remember that movie AND the restaurant scene so well!

Mel-Sorry your day was not as you planned it to be, but at least you have a new friend (Woody). He is adorable.

Mandi- EXACTLY!

William- Well, it wasn't all that bad.

Carole- I used to have that movie on VHS.  I don't want to have to rent it...

Laura- Woody rocks!

Mel - which Salty's was it. I usually found Salty's Redondo to be a bit better than the others. Next time try Ray's Boathouse or Anthony's  Home Port in Kirkland. They are, well used to be, pretty good. Or, the Metropolitan Grill, if you really like steak.

Liz- Further proof I should have called you.

Mike- I went to many good restaurants while I was there but this one had very high reviews.  Next time I am calling you first!

Mel...

I don't know how I missed this post, I try to catch every one as they occur. I have NEVER understood why restaurateurs spend MILLIONS on setting up a spectacular venue and then skimp on the food and the service.

It makes no sense to me whatsoever. When I go to an expensive place, i expect the wait staff to be trained and knowledgeable.

OH, BTW when traveling, I don't consult any guides. I look for the place with the packed parking lot and people waiting in line. It may not be the most romantic spot in town but I guarantee it has the best food!

What a bummer Mel! I too am peeved when I finally save up and go out to a nice dinner only to have it suck.  I love pomegranate martini's and yeah when they charge upward of 10 to 15 bucks for one, there better be some real pomegranted in it!  I waitressed too (so many similiarities I am finding between you and I) and that makes me a great tipper but also makes me expect great service when in a fine restaurant.

Did you make mention about any of this the manager?  Just curious.

Melody, sorry, I could have warned you. I've never thought their service (or food) lived up to their reputation. Next time I'll give you some better suggestions.

Hey girl!  Who's the hot babe making nice nice with the seal?

I'm sorry the experience wasn't great.  I hate to spend my hard earned money on mediocre service and products!  At least I did when I actually earned money!  xxoo

Richard- Refer to Colleen's comment.

Cristal- You're damn right!  Absolutely I did!  That is the reason for this blog post.

JL- Yes, we had fun any way.

Colleen- I didn't give you much time, eh?

Susan- I am married to the tightest man that ever lived.  (One of us has to be, right?).  So it was all my idea and on me.  BTW- Woody is a Sea Lion!

I live in the Seattle area and can not agree more. I have been to Salty's several times but it has yet to live up to any rep. it has IMO. I like 21 Central in Juanita and Daniels is pretty good. The others that someone posted above are very good as well. Outside of the dinner it does sound like you enjoyed yourself. Even thought the food may have left a bad taste in your mouth, it sounds like Seattle overall didn't.

Oops, I hate that when that happens. I have done this a few times and either have sent clients or taken friends to a hot place that has always been given great reviews and then have a pie in my face when it is horrible.
