Jon,
I think our Clean Slate Blog for Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate deserves some consideration as we rank in the Top 40 (Technoratti-261,148) and apparently are the ONLY major Real Estate Brokerage Franchisor on this list.
Jon, thanks again for this, why isn't AR on this? Glad to see I moved up a few spaces. Now can you go to Bill Gasset's blog and answer the re-blog question, we are all waiting for your explanation. Thanks!
Thanks once againa Jonathan for compiling this list. If I might offer a suggestion, you may want to include a little verbiage on what the numbers mean as that is asked every month -- it might help people understand better.
Missy - AR isn't on the list because this is a list of individual (and mulit-author) blogs, not blog networks. That's why RealTown or Realtor.com isn't here either. It is pretty much impossible for one stand alone blog to compete with a network that has tens of thousands of users.
The number in the far right column looks like the blogs Compete.com monthly visitor ranking (lower is better -- the #1 Compete site would have the most monthly visitors). For example, the 12,156 rank for Curbed.com means Compete.com thinks that Curbed is the 12,156th most visited site on the internet (whic given the number of websites, is pretty dang impressive!)
This brings up another point about this list - it does not look at all real estate blogs. Jonathan has been great at manually adding them when he knows about them. I don't know where the guy finds the time to compile this list every month....
I just checked my data on Compete.com and it doesn't match the blog stats that WordPress provides. Per WP, my traffic is 3-4 times higher than what Compete shows. The primary keywords don't match either. Do others find this discrepancy?
Elaine - every site like Compete calculates visits differently. They use formulas based on stats compiled from Compete members, it's not going to be precise. I have four different traffic analysis systems installed on my blog, and none of them report the same number.
Sites like Alexa and Compete that use numbers based off limited users are notoriously inaccurate. They show my traffic at about 40% lower than Google Analytics and other "traffic meters" I have installed. From what I've read, the lower the traffic, the less accurate that Compete is (though for me, they are closer than Alexa).
It's also important to compare the same metric. In other words, make sure you're comparing unique visits, not just total visits, between the two.
Bottom line is, no system that estiamtes your traffic like Compete does will never be as accurate as a system actually installed on your site.
Jon - I appreciate you putting together this list/rank every month. Are you using the numbers from the compete tool bar? I noticed the tool bar is not showing the same rank that comes up when looking up the sites on Compete.com. Your September and October figures are nearly identical, but would reflect more movement using rank from Compete.com rather than the tool bar.
OK if I sorta understand what Jay and Ben are saying, does Compete and Alexa only record visits for people that have the toolbar from those sites installed? If so, that's would seem to miss "ordinary" people. Also, why the focus on unique visitors? I'm in the business to attract and sell real estate, so ordinary people are important to me and while unique visitors (no cookie) are critical, those people with the cookies still installed, are representative of the stickiness, so having them come back to visit is VERY important. Those are the people that can turn into clients. Am I wrong in my assumptions of how this works?
Jonathan, Thanks for the great list - although I have heard of some of these, I am unfamiliar with a large number of them. I will take some time to check them out. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for your time in spreading the good word to fellow AR members. You could literally spend all day becoming a part of each heavy hitting blog or social network to rank high on search engines. The best idea that someone here on AR wrote about is to pick sites that work best for your profession and personal style, make sure they are heavily visited, commit to these sites, work them and you will start to see your business grow due to the exposure you will get on search engines. As always content is king.
Jonathan, this is the first time I've looked at the list. It did seem a little confusing at first. Jay and Bens' comments to Reese helped explain it. And I just worried about points. LOL
Thanks for the list. I see that we're close to the top and I want to thank our fantastic contributors for their efforts that have allowed us to be there. That said, we're always looking for new contributors to add to the blog. If you're interested, swing by and let me know you'd like to be a part of something great!
Jon, Interesting. Next time you post the list give us a little background in the determining factors for the list. I notice #1 curbed is mostly NY and LA. I haven't gone through the whole lest yet but, am planning on working through it.

Not bad for a 3 month old brand!
