mesa zipWhat to do with the money?

That's a question that cities around the nation have been asking themselves lately.

Last July President Bush signed the Housing and Recovery Act of 2008 into law. The legislation included funding for foreclosure assistance and relief programs.

Like any other city, Mesa has been trying to figure the best use of public funds.

In an article "City to Target Foreclosures in ZIP 85204", Gary Nelson of the Arizona Republic (Oct 17, 2008) explained the city's plan. In short, it is to use the city's allotment ($9.6 million) to concentrate on the area most affected by recent events.

By concentrating on this one area the city hopes to be able to have the greatest possible impact. Ray Villa, Mesa city services director said, "aiming the money at a relatively small area, rather than scattering it around the city"

The city is set to further flesh out a plan in the coming weeks and present it to council by November 20th.

Council meetings can be attended in person, viewed on cable or by streaming media here: Mesa City Channel.

I have a former neighbor who moved to Phoenix fout years ago.  She loves it, but does say how slow the market is over there.

Hi Chuck - I can see the lid on Pandora's box opening now.  How are the folks in all the other zip codes going to react when they catch wind of this little gem.  The media should have a field day with this one.  Am I missing something?

John- The market has its tough spots. I'm glad to see them concentrate on the area of greatest concern.

Gail- That was my original thought. However, Mesa is so big that I'm guessing people realize this may be the best plan.

Chauck - I hope that this decision works well for your area.  I feel sorry for the folks who are unlucky to live in the other areas.  Unfortunately there are not enough funds to help everyone.  How to choose who to help is a problem that I am sure many areas are dealing with.

Pam- It's one of those things... with the way government is sending money in so many directions it's nice for the area that receives it. I'm sure there will be those who will second-guess that... but they're "all ears", citizens can let their reps know.
