New Digs for Carlsbad Learning Center

By

The literacy programs directed by the Carlsbad City Library has some new specialized digs in its new space recently opened as part of the Carlsbad City Library System..

Previously, the literacy program was operated out of rented quarters that limited its offerings as well as the number of students and adults it could serve. Now with the new space that the city spent over $6.1 million on, is a testament of the commitment of not only the city of Carlsbad but of its citizens and especially the remarkable library system.

The adult literacy program was founded in 1984 and was coupled with the Centro de informacion for library and language education founded in 1991. These two programs will operate in its new building. The Centro de Informacion has a number of computers, a reading and audiovisual collection of over 8000 items and also has a homework zone for the students.

Over 1500 people have already taken the literacy program in the library system and it has trained over 1200 tutors who have enthusiastically volunteered in the programs.

The adult literacy program provides private tutoring and now has a new computer room that will greatly expand its literacy program as well as various rooms for specialized group learning.

The new centers focus will be on early childhood as well as family literacy and homework assistance for elementary and secondary students

Hi William-That is awesome. It sounds like it will help a whole lot of folks. It's amazing to think  just how many people living here in the U.S. can't read.  The world is changing so fast but it's the basic 3 R's that we still all need. I wish they would do more things like this in all the different states. They might and I'm just not aware of it.  Where is Carlsbad in relation to San Diego? Enjoyed chatting with you again and I'll talk to you again. Take care until I talk to you again. Sincerely Pat

Hi Pat, Thanks for your comments. Carlsbad is in north San Diego county and it is along the coast line just south of Oceanside. San Diego makes up a large portion of the county but is somewhat south of Carlsbad, say 18 to 20 miles.

I would agree that this sort of thinking by any city or community helps everyone and as part of the Carlsbad City Library system, I was so impressed with the new features and how well thought out the program is.

Hi William,

What a great benefit for those in Carlsbad. Looks like a lot of folks have been helped already.

Hi Lynda, Of all the communities in San Diego County, Carlsbad has demonstrated to me at least that it cares for its citizens and just does things that really help the community. I am also taken that they seem not as political and just seem to get the job done.

William...it sounds like an addition and a program that will benefit many. My only question is I find it odd that on one hand people ok the funds for that and on the other are screaming about illegals. I would imagine they are heavy users of the services.

Hi Joan, I really appreciate your thoughts and I will say that had not occurred to me. I would guess there are plenty of people that can benefit from this new learning center that are here the right way. As to others, it would be pure speculation on my part and I usually don't go there. I think the community provides a remarkable service and it seems to have generated so much pride from the many volunteers and program organizers as well as the many that are benefiting. A real win win.

William--It amazes me how many adults cannot read! With programs such as this, let's hope the numbers of illiterate go down as the usage of this programs, and others across the US, go up. It is wonderful for Carlsbad that their program is growing!

Me too Teri, How is it that some many in modern times have escaped the available education afforded by public and private concerns. With so many people coming from foreign places , I suspect that is what has increased so greatly the numbers that are not literate.
