To the tune of Mr. Roger's "Who are the people in your neighborhood"

Who are the movers and shakers in your industry?

In your industry? In your industry?

Who gets the buyers and sellers in your industry?

They're the vendors that you meet each day.

How can this be friends?  What's going on?  Who owns the real estate industry?  To be honest, I'm not sure anymore.

Are you paying attention to what's going on with your listings?

Trulia hires (lobbyists) while others contract and layoff...hmmm?

Number 1 Expert relaunches as Number 2 Expert

Are you content to be a benchwarmer or are you a first string team player?

NEVER, EVER STOP ASKING QUESTIONS.  At the end of the day, you either have a relationship with your service provider that's healthy to your business or harmful.  You need to do your homework and make the call.  Forge good relationships, that's what it's all about.

Yes, your service needs to be more than just the listings.  So do the services of the vendors you work with.

We all need to be held to higher standards.  We need to deliver the goods or get gone.

You are the REALTORS.  Take back your industry.

Crush the box.  Somebody's gonna do it and it should be you.

Rebecca - I like it.  Feisty, honest, and driven.  Very nicely stated, my friend.

It happened in the computer industry.  Once it had a clearly defined distribution channel.  The manufacturer sold to the distributor and the distributor sold to the retailer/system integrator. Now, manufacturers are competing directly with the distribution and retail channel by selling directly to the consumer.  Think the same can't happen in real estate?  Think again -- it can  happen.  So be ready to reinvent yourself. ~ Evelyn

Rebecca, you have some very good points in your article. There are definetely some new strings that will be pulled in 2009. I think the first applies to print/web combinations and the second referring to realtors getting more control of their regional mls to give consumers one central place to find listings. There are definetely some good and bad things on the horizon that will affect all realtors, but i agree, nar needs to step up and become more friendly to its own industry.

Thank you to Katerina, Jason, Property Connections, Castellum Realty and Eugene Jones.  This is probably the most important post I have written to date, but you are the few who have contributed to the conversation.

And this is my concern....too much passivity around this subject and it is THE MOST IMPORTANT subject for a real estate professional today.

I will keep trying to spread the message, the knowledge and to encourage action.

You are so right on with this blog. We as agents need to take back our industry. The lobbist, lawyers and government are trying to take it away.

This SHOULD be  of great concern to all of us.  But too many don't see that our industry is being reinvented as we type our blogs.

Rebecca..I have to agree...the banks and the gov are taking the business back from Realtors...its a time to see that while banks dont sell real estate, they certainly can dump real estate, thereby lowering the values of an entire country, affecting us all.

Now, I do feel that the prices were too high, and driven higher by greed and an irrational exuberance. Laws were broken a thousand times a week while one person after another was placed in overpriced homes that they could not afford.

The market has to go thru this, to return to people buying houses they can actually afford, and to use a house as a home and not an ATM..It never did make sense, and many of us did see it coming. Now that its here, so many here on Active Rain want to cry foul, but a look in thier rear view mirror is the real story
