UNUSUAL MOTH - PALM DESERT

One of the little pleasures I have here on ActiveRain, is viewing photos that folks take when they are either vacationing, working around their homes, or seeing the unusual in the course of their everyday lives.

If you have an opportunity to visit the blogs of the following Active Rainers, I think you will witness some pretty amazing stuff.  Robert Swetz is a serious traveler and photographer.  Visiting his blog is like going on a Virtual Vacation.  Another blogger, Mike Jones, often photographs things that "visit" his home environment - rattle snakes, owls, hummingbirds, etc.  The other day, Trey Thurmond photographed the most "otherworldly" metallic armored beetle I had ever seen.

The photo above is of a moth that I discovered on a trip to Palm Desert, awhile back.  It measures about 3 1/2 inches across.  It absolutely looked like a dried leaf.  Nature often does present some really remarkable creatures for us to experience.

Myrl - I would like to thank you so much for mentioning my name in your blog. I am slowly getting myself out there through my different groups. I have spent 30 years of my life taking photographs, painting with oil paints & water colors and writing poetry and short stories. One of these days I will really bust loose at AR and members will start to wonder, who really is this Robert Swetz guy? It's our little secret, OK?

Thanks again and keep in touch.

That is so freakin' cool, Myrl. Although, it's too bad that the moth's wings look damaged. Maybe that's what happens from hanging out in the desert in Palm Springs?

I was in my back yard yesterday looking at my holly tree when I noticed a tiny squirrel perched on top of my bird house. It was staring at me with such inquisitive eyes, and I was cursing myself for not having my camera ready.

Hi Myrl - Thanks for sharing your moth.....it reminds me that somewhere I have some closeups of a luna moth that are really neat.  I wonder where I filed those?

Lizette - Yes the way it's wings were formed and curved around at the front edges, it looked very stealth.  I had never seen wings on a moth formed in that way.

Donna - I thought it very unusual too.  I've not seen many moths like these.

Mike - I hadn't noticed that before, but when you look at it, it almost looks like a face.

Robert - I've always enjoyed your blog.  It's worth visiting for those who haven't already seen it.

Elizabeth - Believe it or not the moth's wings aren't really damaged - they just look that way.  There were a couple smaller moths of this variety that we saw on this trip, and they had the same configuration on the wings.  The wings are actually in a couple layers, that curve at the front edges like an actual airplane wing.  And they notch at certain places.  You can notice the wings are alike on both sides.  This moth was alive, and flew perfectly, when it tired of our company.

Ann - I think I may have a picture of a luna moth, that I took up in El Dorado a few years back.  I'll see if I can dig it up in my old photos.
