This morning I made a reservation for dinner at the restaurant at the Rhinecliff Hotel.  Let me back up a bit; for our  25th wedding anniversary in 2006 our children gave us a gift certificate to this restaurant.  The opening of the hotel had been delayed and today was the first time since it opened that we could make it.

The trip to the restaurant should have been rather short however there was a lot going on in Rhinebeck this weekend.  The largest event was the Sheep and Wool Festival at the Dutchess County Fairgrounds.  I had a couple of routes I could have taken but decided to go down Route 9 which was a mistake.  Since it was such a beautiful fall day the attendance at the fairgrounds was heavy resulting in a traffic jam.  I suspect the traffic will also be heavy tomorrow since the Sheep and wool festival will still be going on.

Finally, we made it to the restaurant which was filled. We were so glad we had reservations as we were seated immediately.  Chatting with the hostess we learned we had just missed a spectacular sunset and this must have been beautiful since the hotel faces the Hudson River and Catskills Mountains. We started with artisan cheeses (from a local farm) and oysters. I then had Pekin Duck and a pumpkin cranberry bread pudding for desert. My son and husband also enjoyed their meals.  The food was delicious and if you are ever in the area make sure to check it out for both the food and views.

Jennifer,
This sounds like a wonderful restaurant for the view and food.  That bread pudding sounds divine!  I make a chocolate/orange one that is excellent (and so very easy).

Gita - Thank you.  By the time we made it to the restaurant was had already celebrated the 26th.

Cynthia - The pudding was really good.  I love the sound of orange chocolate I don't think I have had that one.

Jennifer, I thought that you guys had this festival in the Spring and not the Fall.  Aren't those sheep going to be a little cold this time of the year after you guys give them a close hair cut :) :)

Oh Jennifer.  I know what that traffic jam can be like by the fairgrounds but it seems as though it was worth the time.  I am glad you enjoyed the dinner.  Have a great week.

Hi Jennifer.  I'm originally from Newburgh and do miss all the Fall happenings this time of year.  But I don't regret coming down to SW Virginia either.  If you ever know of anyone looking for a great place to retire or buy a vacation home, Smith Mountain Lake Virginia is truly a great place to live and only 8 hours from NY or FL.  My house taxes are only $1200.00 per YEAR.  Most New Yorkers pay that a month.  We have 4 seasons, but very mild winters and almost no snow!  Best of luck to you and have a great day!

Jennifer, the wool stuff sounds really fun!  And that must be a really beautiful part of the world right about now.  Our leaves have barely started to change.

Jennifer,

Reading your post made me want to take a plane to Rhinebeck and a taxi straight to Rhinecliff hotel especially for the bread pudding. Happy anniversary! Sounds as if you have wonderful boys. I like the mood of the photograph also.

Pat - It is beautiful here, I am sure you will be seeing the colors soon.

Teri - you are so right, I can notice the contrast by reading posting here.

Eloise - There is an English touch to this place, the pudding was delicious.   My anniversary was June and by the time we made it to the restaurant I had already celebrated number 26.

Wow! That was very nice of your kids to give you a gift certificate for your 25th anniversary two years ago to the Rhinecliff Hotel. I have never tried Pekin Duck before, I ought to try it one day. Have a great weekend. Great post.
