A Curb Appeal Tip - Make Your Roses Go Wild!

Joseph's Coat Climbing RoseEpsom Salts are a cheap and easy way to enhance the Curb Appeal of your Listings or home. Having beautiful, healthy looking plants can definitely raise your curb appeal quotient. Even if you don't have a lot of plants, it can only help your sales efforts if the one's you do have look healthy and happy.

I am fortunate to live in beautiful Pasadena, CA also known as the home of the Rose Bowl Parade. Every year I apply 1/4 cup of Epsom Salts around the base of my roses in the spring and every year I have the most incredible roses. They are fat and prolific and bloom earlier than everyone else's roses in my neighborhood. I have 20 or 30 blooms and buds on some plants. Epsom Salts add Magnesium and Sulphur to the soil, and at least in my area, it makes my roses go crazy. It tends to acidify the soil and a little bit goes a long way. I follow up with 1 Tablespoon for each plant throughout the growing season

I am including a link to the National Garden Society article about using Epsom Salts in the garden, as it also works on a number of other plants that like acidic soils.

Hi Michelle,

Wow, epsom salts huh?  I thought they were just for soaking sore muscles!  I don't own a single rose bush but intend to check out that website and see which of my plants might benefit from the salts.  Thanks!

You are so right.  Each spring, I use alfalfa meal, kelp meal, epsom salt, triple super phosphate and a balanced slow release rose food.  Mid summer, they get the rose food and alfalfa again.  My roses are the envy of the neighborhood!

Val: I was amazed the first time I saw the results - and it only took about 2 weeks before I had tons of buds. Everything I use it on really greens up quickly. And the best thing is you can buy Epsom Salts at almost any grocery store or drug store and it is cheap.

Greg and/or Brian: I haven't tried the alfalfa, kelp or super phosphate yet, but I will. Thanks for the tip. I will be posting more photos of my roses in the coming days as the buds open. Stay tuned!

I put the epsom salt on my roses too.  And with 14 horses, I have a mountain of manure at all stages. We throw everything except meat on there and I have the best gardens. I only use the well composted stuff and it is wonderful.

Speaking of Moving Mountains....joke!

Any idea if epsom salt helps hydrangeas?  I read the article, but didn't see any mention.  I thought they liked acidic soil?

Very funny Kathleen. I'm going to have to get you back for that one!

Kathy: You will be amazed. In two or 3 weeks after application your rose bushes will look like they are on steroids.

Amy: I am by no means an expert on this subject, especially hydrangeas. I don't think it will hurt hydrangeas, but I have read conflicting information about whether or not adding epsom salts aids in making hydrangeas bluer or not. One article said no, another said epsom salts would aid in the uptake of aluminum which makes hydrangea flowers get more blue.
