MOM, My Organic Market, A FABULOUS GROCERY STORE IN FREDERICK, MARYLAND.Mom

I took my new Toyota 4Runner into the dealership yesterday for a "hands on training session" for all of the buttons and bows on the dash.  Sure, I could read the manual, but that wouldn't be any fun.  Since I was about 1/2 hour early, I drove into the shopping center across Buckeystown Road from the Toyota dealership and found a new (to me) grocery store with fabulous produce.

WELCOME TO MOM - My Organic Market

I generally shop in Loudoun County Virginia at Harris Teeter or the Giant, except when I'm in Bethesda, MD and get close enough to Balducci's to drop in for many fabulous gourmet treats.

I was pleasantly surprised by the variety and quality of the produce.

Rows of beautiful fresh produce.  A cozy place to rest during shopping and the final touch, paper bags.

Lenn- Looks to be a very nice store and one that should hopefully do very well in your area. BTW: how did the Toyota training go? =)

Best,

Scott

I would kill (might be exaggerating) to have access to produce like you found at Mom's grocery.  I was spoiled for many years by the produce in the different valleys of CA, now I live in a desert and buy green fruit and wait for it to ripen.  Just does not taste good.

Hi Lenn - just my kind of store.  To me, there's nothing more welcoming in a food store than the beautiful colors and scents of fresh produce.  And I often wonder what the deal is with paper bags - I always have to ask to have my food put in paper bags, and sometimes they aren't too happy about obliging that request.

Scott.  These stores do very well.  I'm not wedded to the organic produce.  In the regulary stores, Bloom, Safeway and Giant, the organic is about 2-3 times the price.

However, in a full organic store, the prices are very good.  Of course, Whole Foods and Balducci's are expensive because they just are.

Virginia.  Goodness.  Seems to me that the stores could truck in fresh produce to Nevada.

Ann.  The regular super markets have paper, but hide them.  Balducci's offers them freely.  This store routinely put the order in paper shopping bags.  I hate the plastic bags.

My daughter used to be the grocery manager for two of the local co-ops in our area.  First the Arlington co-op and then the Takoma Park one.  Loved the produce and all the other organic goodies.

Lenn - congrats on the new car!  I hope it will be fun to drive - esp since I know you cover a wide area and must spend a good deal of time in your car.

We don't have "Mom's" out here. Closest thing is probably Whole Foods, which I imagine is out there too. Good stuff, but expensive. Best salad bar around, though.

Lenn, no - not Mesquite, we are 80 miles from Vegas, they must dump it all there.  Closest freshish produce is ST George, Utah, 40 miles and it is nothing like Napa Valley produce.  When family from CA visit, they have to bring fruit and vegetables to get in my door - I check their bags first, then they get a hug.  :)

Lenn:  We have an Earthfare here and I LOVE that place!  It's more fun than the mall (where I NEVER get a chance to visit!)  The icing on the cake--the paper bags are a pet peeve of mine too!  It seems that when you get to the checkout at the grocer, the bag boy asks, "Is plastic okay?" and I say, "Can I have paper, please?" they ALWAYS seem to huff and puff about that.  I just don't get it--I prefer paper because the bags don't fall over in the back of my car and they're easier to handle as well as being environmentally friendly.  You would think I asked the bag boys to cut off one of their digits or something!

Congrats on the 4Runner too!

Debe.  That's the answer I get at Harris Teeter too.  I want paper for the same reason.  Also, I can use them to recycle, which I do.

I like the 4Runner.  It's giving me 19 MPH which is more than I expected.  After driving a Sequoia for 4 years that got 19 blocks to a gallon, it's refreshing.

I know that the paper bags are expensive, but plastic is not environmentally sound.  Mom simply uses them exclusively.  They also have a great selection of environmentally safe cleaning supplies.  I like that because with a septic system, it's important.

I'm not an environmental zealot, but I'm not fond of the chemicals that are so profuse either.

Christopher.  Actually, there is a Mom store in College Park.  I love College Park too.

Virginia.  My goodness.  That's awful.  Goodness, send me your address and I'll send you a CARE package.  Some fruits and vegetables have good shelf life.

Mary.  We have Whole Foods here too but they are outrageously expensive and the quality is no better than regular stores.  Harris Teeter has both regular and organic produce here and I like that store a lot too.  I don't know how often I'll get to Frederick.  It's about 35 miles away.  The Giant is 14 miles away, the Harris Teeter is 20 miles and the Fresh Foods is 2 miles away.

Somehow when you get to the heart of the matter, food is food.

Paul.  You folks should have an abundance of wonderful produce.  Good grief, you're feeding most of the country.

Lenn, looks like a great place to shop.

By the way they are putting so many features into the cars these days, that before long we are going to have to take a college course on the vehicle that we are buying before we can get in it and drive out of the lot :)

Lenn:  The grocer that always huffs and puffs IS Harris Teeter!  I had no idea that you had them there!  They are headquartered here and there is one on every corner here so, that is the store that I frequent.  I go to Earthfare when I can but, it's not as close to me as the Teeter's.

Richard.  It always surprises me when folks in the south can't find good produce.  You have a much longer growing season than us.

Katerina.  Whole Foods here is about the most expensive store around.  Yet, the parking lot is always full.  They are located in affluent neighborhoods so they really don't care.  There is an Exxon station in Bethesda with regular gas at $3.05 but the same gas in my area is $2.60.  I haven't driven through Potomac recently.  It's probably about $325 there in the most expensive gasoline station in the Metro area.  Why do they charge so much?  Because they can.

I'm sure that the Organiz grocers figured that you folks would have such wonderful local produce that they wouldn't have enough of a market.

George.  Isn't it the truth.  I doubt if I'll ever use the navigation system.  I know my way around.  But, the features on this vehicle are quite different from the Sequoia and I only used a few of them.

Terry.  I love speciality stores and stores with good produce.  This store is an organic speciality store.

Fran.  Indeed.  I haven't yet figured out where MOM makes money.  The produce is very reasonable.  Perhaps it's the meat products.  Since I don't buy them, I wouldn't know.

Debe.  I like Harris Teeter a lot.  Actually, I like to visit Harris Teeter and graze.

Neal.  Florida?  You certainly should have some good produce.  I remember spending a winter there some years ago and just about everyone had an orange tree in the back yard.

Alexsandra.  Good idea.  Boonsboro isn't too far.

Paddy.  I eat well every week.  It's a blessing and a curse.

Lenn, I just love to see more of these places open up to compete with Whole Foods.  Hope they find their way to this part of the world!  And clever name!

Hi Lenn - We have nothing like this in Titusville, we make do with Super WalMart, Publix and Winn Dixie.  They're pretty good but organic offerings are not the norm; one of the downsides to living in a small town.  What a great name for the store!  Did you just happen to bring a camera to your bells and whistles appointment LOL

Lenn - It would be so wonderful if there was an organic store like that here...The stores I go to the produce looks like it's been sitting around for days and I am so leary of the freshness of what I buy.  And as far as bags, they are almost non-existent here which drives me crazy and does not help to make my shopping experience a pleasant one when I get home when cans and produce are rolling around in the back of my truck.

Matt.  Me too.  I think it was a stroke of genius.

Donna.  Many small independent stores like MOM have pathetic produce.  However, I believe that the produce is the STAR of this market.

Lenn, you need to get to Frederick more often. MOM has been open for a while here. We also have Common Market on Buckeystown Pike, another organic grocer/co op that has moved to a beautiful new location. I shop at them both.

What an adventure.
