I MC'd the first local
race back about seven years ago when our goal was to get 1,000 people
to participate. While the goal of Susan G. Komen is to eradicate breast
cancer and take away the need for events like this, unfortunately both
the need and the event grow larger every year.
This years race was a special one. My daughter, Tara, put together a team of friends and co-workers to race in celebration of her mother. Aside from being saddled with me for an ex-husband, Linda is a terrific person. She owns and publishes the highly successful Valley Business Journal, has been awarded Small Business of the Year by the local Chambers 3 times and was selected by the SBA as Small Business of the Year in California a couple years ago. She was also just diagnosed with breast cancer a couple weeks ago and will undergo surgery this week.
One of the highlights of the event is also the expansion of the Survivors Tent. While the need for research continues to grow, it is also encouraging to see the number of survivors grow as well.
I also raced to celebrate a victory for a great friend of mine, Nancy. Nancy was CEO for our association for over 20 years and was just getting ready to embark on realizing one of her life's dreams earlier this year when she was diagnosed. Caught early, Nancy endured surgery and radiation therapy and in August was able to continue pursuing her dream and moved to Hawaii. I saw her last week and she is in better health and spirits than she has been for years.
The race was divided into 4 segments this year, a times 5k run at 8, a general 5k run at 9 and a 1 mile walk at 10. While most of our team was content (and lucky) to be able to walk the 1 mile race, my wife Lisa ran both 5k's and then walked it with the rest of us slackers. Following the race we all disembarked to Harry's Pacific Grill for their excellent Sunday Brunch. Being close-by, Harry's soon filled with racers and walkers and the festive atmosphere extended through the day sharing memories and celebrations.
If you get a chance to participate in an event this month, please take time to do it. Whether it's the Komen Race, Lee National Denim Day, Michelle's Place or one of the countless other fine efforts devoted to raising funds for this effort - it's time to BECOME PART OF THE CURE. If your life has been blessed and you don't yet know a woman diagnosed with breast cancer, I can assure you sooner or later it will strike close to home - UNLESS you support groups like this to find a cure and ERADICATE BREAST CANCER in our lifetime. As one survivor group's T-shirts proudly proclaimed - SAVE THE Ta Ta's.
