I recently wrote a blog on my companies website, that was completely taken out of context by a few people. Has this ever happened to you? The comments my administrator was receiving were not so nice to say the least.

When I write blogs, I typically like to add sarcasm or some sort of wit to keep the blog interesting. The problem is becuase there is no real "tone" or explanation blogs can very easily be taken out of context. After reading some of the comments, I felt horrible and never wanted to write another blog again. Obviously I have decided to write again, but I feel as though I am holding back as to not piss anyone off.

So I guess my question is, how do you speak your mind or shall I say stick to your guns, without the backlash of someone twisitng your words and writing negative comments back to you? I'm beginning to think you just have to roll with the punches and if some are harder then others you just have to learn to let it go. Not everyone can agree with you at all times... right????

Nicole, there is always going to be someone who will take it out of context, get up on the wrong side of bed, have one too many, or just plain misunderstand.

Here, on AR, at least, you have the option of making your post "members only", when/if you are talking about more sensitive stuff, that you may not want the whole world to know about.  At least only members will be able to read it.

If you think you're writing something that may cause someone to take things out of context, you may want to clarify... but don't lose sleep over it.  You can't please everyone, all the time .... so try to please yourself first. :)

Right on, what Sylvie said. Heck if we all can't be politically correct because they keep changing the words.

Nicole,

I hear you! I had an intern at our local paper get upset with me and he wrote a scathing article about me virtually blaming me (all of us) for the housing crisis. He also took things out of context and included a link to my blog. I got hate responses from across the country. All you can do is delete the crude ones and do your best to respond to the semi-reasonable ones. Somewhere you have to draw the line though and stop responding. Just say what you need to say to clarify and, as you said, roll with the punches.

Hi Nicole,

I happen to see the blog you are talking about and I understood the jest of what you were getting at.  I am not an appraiser but I don't think you were trying to insult anyone.  I read some of the comments they left, if they were writing it in the same humorous sprite that you projected then I think that you and they agree.  BTW I agree with what both sides said.  It was a great blog the kind that should be written

Hi Nicole,

When I wrote my blog post on our company blog site about how I felt about the national bailout and how it pertained particularly to ME, I was shot down, not by our moderator (surprisingly) but by some others. I felt so bad that I deleted it. I read some other posts on Inman about how blog posters get insulted and misunderstood and I guess it made me feel a little better. I realize that when we write about our personal views, we are like radio talk shows, some hate us, some love us. There isn't anything interesting about anything in between. I suppose I could write about the way things are in my daily life but that would be so flippin' BORING!

I completely agree with Joyce because it is difficult to be politically correct ALL the time.

I'm sick and tired of having to be politically correct all the time.

I think you just touched the main reason why so many people ar eafraid to get started on the blog scene. If we were always worried about how people would take our comments and opinions this would be a very boring world! We are all bound to get feedback that is not what we desire...but take it as it comes and keep blogging. I would much rather read blogs with substance and opinion than a boring blog that is saying wheat everyone "wants" to hear.
