house
I was recently working with a real estate buyer who had an extremely sensitive sense of smell. Being that I'm quite easily irritated by strong smells myself, I could understand her predicament. But little did I know, just what I was dealing with.

  • House Number One: My own listing. An immaculate house with everything she wanted! Only one problem; Glade Plug-Ins. She was so repulsed by the smell of the Glade Plug-Ins, that she insisted on waiting in the driveway while I turned off lights and locked doors.  Side-issue: the master bedroom closet entry was from the dressing area off the bathroom, instead of the actual bedroom. She can't understand why anyone would want that! Her words: "What a horrible idea!"
  • House Number One Again: Before we left the first time, I removed all the Plug-Ins and placed them in the garage. Two weeks later, we came back to see if the smell was gone. NOPE! Scratch this one.
  • House Number Two: Candles! *sigh*  Side Issue: the pool pump is on the same side of the house as the master bedroom. Surely it can be heard through the concrete wall. Her words "What a stupid thing to do!"
  • House Number Three: Gas fireplace. She insists that she can smell the gas throughout the entire house.
  • House Number Four: Someone cooked with garlic. (I guess the people should go out to dinner every night until their house is sold?) Side Issue: Her Persian rug won't look right in the rooms with the beveled edges. Buyer: "Why do the builder's make rooms like that? It's not practical and nobody would want that!" *Actually, in my experience, most people love it.*
  • House Number Five: No Smell!! No side issues!! It's perfect. But she wants to come back tomorrow.
  • House Number Five Again: They used the gas fireplace last night... Can you guess?...
BTW, did I mention she had a brand new house built and never moved in because she can't stand the smells of the glue and fresh paint?

I have officially given up. Someone else is going to have to help this lady find a house. If it was just the smells, I might be able to continue working with her. But she has a negative opinion on everything and her negativity is affecting my own attitude. And I honestly don't think she's really interested in buying a house. After 13 years in the business, I know when someone is wasting my time.

I'm not a tour guide and I work on straight commission. I have serious clients who really want to buy. I believe my time would be better served elsewhere. Time to move on.

And for my own side note: We all have opinions. As REALTORS we have to keep our opinions to ourselves. But have you noticed that as time goes by, people are becoming more and more belligerent with their opinions? People now state their opinions as if they're the ONLY possible truth. It's as if they're looking for an argument. In actuality, the ONLY truth is that it's just an opinion. And we all have different ones. Perhaps we should all be more considerate of other people when we're stating our opinions?

LOL!!  I'm sorry, but this was funny to me.

I knew a lady from church who was a "shut in" because she had extreme allergies to scents, and everything would give her a terrible headach, whether it was a light scent like baby powder, or air freshener.  She had nine million things wrong with her and could not come to church mainly because of the "smells."

Yet, every six weeks she got a perm.  Which smells for DAYS afterward, almost as bad as a skunk.  Oh well.

Another friend told me she wouldn't be coming back to church anymore because she was allergic to the fresh flowers on the altar.

Only catch:  the flowers were silk.

I worked with a loan officer years ago that was so sensitive to smells that he bought me hand lotion, so I would not use the smelly kind.  Some people are just very sensitive.

Lisa- Your client seem like she would be hard to please.  With regards to the smell sensitivity I know many people who have issue with this.  It is a problem that more and more people are developing because our environment is polluted and toxic, have you noticed more and more people are developing allergies?  I have also noticed that this health problem can make the individual more picky, maybe a green house would be the answer.

I'm not aware of any Green Houses in this area, or even of any builders who are building them here. The Daytona area tends to be a bit behind on a lot of things.

The thing is, I have allergies and am sensitive to dust, pollen, etc. You know; the usual. I really think this woman was just wasting my time and looking for excuses not to buy. She had more issues than just the smells. The worst part was, she just couldn't understand that other people may have another point of view on anything; like the closet doors, pool pump location, and beveled rooms.

Oh well. Next! :)

An interesting study done on children over time turned up the fact that those children raised in extremely clean environments tended to have twice the incidence of not only childhood illnesses, but allergies, as those who grew up on farms.  And, as the researchers said about doing microscopic examinations of bedding, about the farm children's bedding, "You don't want to know what we found there!)  It was not the lack of exposure to pollution and toxins on the part of the farm kids - remember, there are lots of chemicals on farms.  It was, actually, the lack of exposure to germs on the part of the "really clean safe house" kids that caused their immune systems to develop allergies and to not be able to fend off childhood illnesses as well.  So, in this case, at least, the increase in allergies had not to do with toxins and pollutants but with our emphasis on getting rid of germs - the very germs needed to develop a good immune system.

That, and, of course, the "jump on the allergy bandwagon" activity that's been going around for quite a while now (says she who has to carry an epipen due to wasp allergies and gets really annoyed with people who think that it makes them "cool" to have allergies or who enjoy the power trip and claim them when they really don't have them, so make it more difficult for those with serious, life-threatening allergies to be taken seriously).  I suspect, Lisa, that your buyer fell into this category.

Actually, she never claimed any allergies! She just doesn't like smells.

wow Lisa lol, I feel for you. I can't believe she built a home and never instructed her builder to use "odorless" products??? (If they exist that is). I am personally sensitive to perfumes and scented soaps (I literally break out in hives) but I uh --- I don't buy them ;) and if I walk past someone wearing heavy perfume I usually tuck my face into my shirt or something until I'm away from them. But I cannot imagine spending the money to build a home and NOT discussing this with the builder. Unreal. It was a humurous read though thank you ;).

I would run not walk as fast as you can.  She is going to waste and ton of your time.  The chances are she will never buy a house "ever".  Even if you lucky enough, which is not very likely, you will waste so much time and energy you have missed out.  When agents are new they get sucked in to these people.  After you have been doing this for a while you find out how to run very fast.

Hi Lisa-

Well- I'm glad to see that I don't get to deal with ALL of the crazy people!

Do you think she'll EVER find anything that is 'acceptable'?

It's hard to say. She obviously wants to move, but she has too many stipulations. And I don't have the patience to keep looking for her.

Lisa, OK, I get your post.  Your right in that some people are just quirky about things like this.  I always thought people might be trying to hide a bad odor in the home by using the cover up plug in's.  I loved your post, definitely made my day.

Lisa I just love this post.

I knew a woman who had a great house she loved it. But after they built a gas station about a mile away she had to move. She could smell the fumes. And Karen I love the silk flowers!

Although I'm sure that the few days you spent with her were pretty trying on your patience, at least you can laugh about it now :)
