Localism was the topic today in our office meeting. We discussed the question of "What is Localism," as defined by AR.  Everyone agreed it is very important for us to draw more attention via the Web/Bloggs to our community, i.e. issues, uniqueness and lifestyle. Even our local Chamber of Commerce has adopted the slogan to "Shop Local". Subsequently, those of us actively Blogging will see to it that an extra effort is made to provide more community communication. Who better than us, the Real Estate community, to make it happen?

Rural areas have always depended on each other to find out about the new business opening up or setting the record straight on local gossip. We think it is a great opportunity for us to be the community spoke person.  We have the chance to showcase all the smaller communities that have very little or no presence on the Web. To narrate their story and perhaps bring back the time when every person knew what was going and everyone knew their neighbor.

The AR people did a great service in providing us with this channel. We locals must take hold of this vision and do some serious networking with the neighborhood

I use it as a place to blog about events, local stores that I love, properties, neighborhoods you name it, if it's local I put it there.

Expose your local area...make your hometown front and center and feed that portal like a cub reporter. You beat a chamber of commerce drum, you sell the area not just the home right?Good post!

Localism is the sole reason why I use AR.  It is the greatest branding mechanism on the internet for agents.  You can now write stories about your communites and blog them versus sending out mailings or postcards.  Just make sure you have good tag words that people in your area will likely Google.  In a rural area it could be Belfair horses....heck, I don't know, but you will.

Do 2-3 articles about what is happening in your area and watch it pop up in the top ten on a google search.  Just did one last week and all I said was that there will be a Holiday Carnival on the 13th of December. Mark it on your calendar and I will follow up in November.  The next day it was number one on a search for one of my communities.  People love stuff like that.....not stats.....

Most of my posts are in localism but my niche in real estate is marketing my homes and my area so it comes to me much more naturally than writing other posts......I make sales from buyers who find me through localism........

Great Comments, Use of the Web announcing community events and activities is a terrific way to get your name out there and letting the community know you care. And it certainly is  amuch more efficient way to reach more people. Thanks for commenting.

Richard:  I just read Dinah's post about missing her office meeting this morning, and then about how pleased she was to find your blog post on Active Rain.  So... here I am !

You have given just a really great description of how helpful something like Localism can be for both promoting the local community, and then, of course... your Active Rain'er agents who do so with their Localism posts.  Thanks for sharing such a helpful post.  By the way...I think Dinah is just great !  I read her posts whenever I see them.

Karen, Thanks for your response and I am making it a point to attempt to respond to the comments received. Until yesterday, I was not sure how to respond to comments. If there is a more direct way to respond to individual comments, I would appreciate the tip. But for now this spot works ok.
