What is the INTENT of Political Expression?

I'm referring to the political expression of placing a Presidential candidate sign on the front lawn or a "Vote For _ _ _ _" sticker on the car.  What is the intent of this expression - to illustrate their own personal choice or to sway someone else's personal choice?

I believe voting is a personal choice. In fact, I'm fairly sure that is why they have voting BOOTHS and not voting overhead projectors. Why do some feel the need to tell everyone how they are going to vote?  I can only imagine it is so they can help make up the mind of the less learned citizens on their street.  It seems in most homogeneous suburban neighborhoods everyone would have an equal ability to analyze the issues and make an informed decision. However, based on the number of Vote For signs plastered across America, there appears to be those who have the enlightenment and those who seek the enlightenment.  I sure do appreciate my neighbors reminding me for whom to vote.  I was having a hard time finding any political propaganda; except, of course, for those hard to find mediums like TV, radio, computer, newspaper, phone solicitations, mail, billboards and 5th grade text books.

My blog, my opinion - when someone puts a Vote For sign in their front yard they are either:

*  Narcissistic and require that strangers know their thoughts.

*  They are over inflated and believe their analysis of the candidates is more in depth than others.

*  They are preying on the assumption that voters are so dumb, they vote based on a branded image and not an informed choice.

Yes, sign bearers are exercising their right to free speech and yes, public debate of the issues and candidates is a must, but I'm not buying the wholesome expression of the yard sign. I think they are insulting.  Voting is a right, voting the issues is a responsibility.

Joe,

I guess I would have to disagree. I do not care about the signs, I am not sure I am noticing them. However, we are simply all different, and some are introverts and some are extraverts, and they would approach it differently. And I think narcissism is not the right erm here...

Some of us are very reserved and you would not figure the true feeling unless you torture them, and with others it is enough to look at them and you you know what they think.

I do not think that the signs are insulting. I seriously think they are no more insulting than electric poles. It is how we perceive them.

Thanks for the comments Jon.  I understand what your saying about how everyone is different on how they express their thoughts. I guess I'm questioning the relevance of expressing the outcome of ones opinions. It isn't like they are providing political debate, they are just stating their choice.
It is no more relevant then putting out a sign that says, "I Drink Coke".  Unless of course, your goal is to get others to drink Coke, without discussing the benefits of Coke. I believe the intent of the political signs is to get others to vote like them, which is NOT the intent of the right to vote.   How do you perceive Vote For signs?  Thanks Jon.

I see  the signs...and blow them off. Seems like a wasted effort. Besides I don't care who anyone else is for...

I don't post a sign, because people automatically label you when they see a "vote for ___" sign.  I actually don't care for either candidate this go-round, however, I decided I'd better vote for the lesser of two evils.  Early voting today was quick and easy.  :)

Gary, you're right, who cares how the other person votes.

Sonja, good for you for voting, even if you weren't passionate about a candidate you considered both and made a choice and weren't persuaded by a neighbor's sign.
