Newbie Tip: Try a less competetive city

By
Real Estate Agent with Mike Russell Real Estate Group SP00225692 Kansas

When I joined Active Rain over a year ago I was a little bit overwhelmed by the amount of information available here. One of the biggest things that I didn't understand was how it all worked. Blogging, keywords, meta tags, it was all french to me.

For many newbies finding a way to make a difference on Active Rain can be hard. Depending on the area that you live in you may need to post and be active for a very long time before you will be recognized in your city.

I have been working with a lot of agents in my office on blogging. One of the strategies I have been suggesting to them is to adopt a less competetive city. By choosing a less competive city they can gain some instant Google recognition. Take for instance, Overland Park Kansas. There are 144 profiles set up and it work take over 60,000 points to be the featured agent but if you were to choose Leawood Kansas there is only 24 profiles and it would only take 7700 points to be the featured agent. Some of you can attain that many points in a weekend.

One of the agents I am working with has only written 1 blog post and has only 750 points but his profile comes up on Google page 1 for Leawood Homes. If his profile was posted in Overland Park it would probably be on page 20. Now mind you Leawood is a much smaller city than Overland Park but the average home sale price is over $488,000.

Active Rain is an enormous community and it has brought me a lot of business, it has helped build my website and has introduced me to a lot of great people. I hope that it will be you the same success. So, if you are looking to find some early success maybe choosing a less competetive city might be your answer.

Michael - finding a city with less competition is a good approach. My area is pretty impacted with the number of agents.

I agree, I hit a city where # 1 was at 1000, got him by the hour.  Now building my lead up to 5K that should take them a while

first the city then the county then the state next the world....  well you know what I mean.  I cant say that I choose my city using your idea I live there it just worked out that way.  thanks

This was recommended to me by the person who introduced me to AR and I was the featured agent within a few days in my town and all I did was fill out my profile page and comment on some blogs.  Good tip for beginners.

It did not take much for me to become the featured agent in our town thanks to its size.  Your post, howeever, made me think of the surrounding towns around me.

Thanks for the responses. I worked my way up to number 1 in my community and #4 in my state. It will take a long time to catch the person infront of me, they have about 27,000 more points than me.

Great idea. I have actually moved my profile around a few times. That way I get exposure all around my county. I am more interested in having my Company name get out in the community then in the featured member thing. I like to move around and get to know people in different areas, but still close enough to possibly do business.

Happy Wednesday!!

When I first joined AR, Margaret Rome and I were pretty much the only two in Baltimore, it didn't take long to surpass the others, but now it takes work to stay there.  Thanks for posting.

That is some great advice...for me, I liked the challenge of needing to climb the AR ladder and went for the most difficult right off the bat LOL

Jeremey,

I didn't have a clue what I was doing when I started. I think I read posts for a month before I wrote my first blog. I have seen several agents jump cities after they get some points rolling in. But to be on google page 1 right away is a good strategy in my book.

Michael - that is great advice for newer AR members.  When I started it took me a long time to kinda grasp the idea and go at it. This will give the newbies a good idea where to start.

I know that you are right!  Now as as a newcomer to AR I am about ready to jump into the blogging circle.

From all you bloggers, any tips for starting?  And any ideas for easy topics that I could feel comfortable on and that people find interesting?
