Sales are up this year on pumpkins! Could it be that family traditions and holidays are our sanctuary from what is going on in the world right now?

Here in Suffolk County, there is no shortage of places to pick pumpkins and it makes for a fun family day, whether you just bring them home and put them on the front porch, or carve them up for Halloween. There is nothing that brings a smile to your face quicker than seeing a small child try to pick a pumpkin twice their size!

Get an early start to visit one of these pumpkin farms:

Albert H. Scmitt Family Farms: Located on Bagatelle Road, Melville. Open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekends and holidays. For further information (631) 549-1159; www.schmittsfamilyfarms.com.

Elwood Pumpkin Farm: Located on Jericho Turnpike in Huntington. Open Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For further information 9631) 368-8626.

Danny ~ Every year I make a pumpkin pie for hubby. I don't really care for it myself (unless it has lots of Cool Whip on it), but I always make it for him.

We raised our own pumpkins this year so we have lots to practice on for that perfect carved pumpkin.

After the season is over we will do a pumpkin hurling contest. Some of those seeds will grow next year, where they land.
