Abandoned communities need Top Neighbors, another opportunity for localism success

By

In the last several months we have seen a host of changes to localism. First their was the rollout for the new localism, then there was the land rush.  I wasn't sure how I felt about the new site at first but once I realized all of the fantastic upgrades I was won over.

What I have realized since the switch over that there are a lot of abandoned communities out there. What do I mean by abandoned communities? Cities or subdivision within cities that have no localism posts at all, so no top neighbors have been assigned to that community. There a lot of fantastic communities looking for a Top Neighbor. I am surprised how people are passing on the opportunity for prime face time with a deicated audience. Now I have always blooged about the community that I live in and several others close by but when I saw how many fantastic community orphan's there were, I jumped at the chance to be the top neighbor. It is like getting a free ticket in the Google sweepstakes.

If you have been wondering why you should post to localism or how localism will help your business think about adopting a couple of abandoned communities on localism. I have a listing right now that read my localism post and called me to list their home because I was their neighborhood expert.

Which one do you think generates a lead for you?

This is great,

Something I never really thought about.

I'll be working to find some areas I serve that may not have a Top Neighbor.

I'll also let you know if anything comes of it!

Thanks!

Thanks for posting this...I had no idea...I am curious too though how much it costs to sponsor a neighborhood and what that looks like...the link in the comment above doesn't work...

To answer a couple of questions above. You do not have to pay to be a top neighbor, you just need to post good content to localism and post it to the community. You have to pay if you want to be the community sponsor. As for is anyone reading localism?Yes. I put a link to my website on every post and in the last 30 days I have had 30 hits on my website directly from localism and 67 hits to my website directly from Active Rain.

Here is how you post to localism and a specific community

local

If your neighborhood is not there, ADD IT.

I sponsored 9 communities in my City and am trying very hard to stay on top of all of them, however, whatever I do doesn't seem to be enough, as people posting listings, or market reports seem to take over Localism.  Do we start posting listings and market reports too, and duplicate content like everyone else, to stay on top, or do we hope that the listings and market reports will show some place else, eventually?  Do I post a two or three line blog, to compete with the 25,000 blogs there now, that are one or two liners, about nothing in particular, or about a recent rate decrease?  It's difficult, especially with so much competition in my area, but I am trying ...

Adopt an orphan ... if you find you can't take care of it properly, you can always give it up. (sounds horrible, but it's the truth) :)

Being a top neighbor has nothing to do with community sponsorship. you become a top neighbor by posting good content to that neighborhood. My point is that there are a lot of great neighborhoods that have no voice and it is a great opportunity to get your face recognized online for that neighborhood. Anytime you can get someone to read your post and get them to your blog or your website is priceless.

Someone said they wondered if localism is being found and read.  IT IS!!!

Use something like Stat Counter, and you'll see how often your blogs are being found.  Be sure you post QUALITY content, with good keywords, photos where possible, and info about things newcomers (and residents) are wondering about.

You won't always know right away that someone found you on Localism - I've gotten contacts through traditional channels that only told me later - "I've really enjoyed your articles about so and so, we started looking into this area 6 months ago!"

I sponsor a neighborhood in Seattle that still needs some love (meaning posts and pictures).  I went out one day to shoot photos but the day was so dreary, the photos were boring.  Waiting for a nice day...oh wait....the sun is shining now.

Localism is a long term process just like blogging that sooner or later will pay off with that one single referral check or deal. Support it and plant the seeds, soon it shall bloom

I have been posting to AR a while but I'm pretty  new to the whole "localism" concept,  so I took a look at my local communities, not to be negative but I  found maybe 4 other local agents that had all the same "looking"very lengthy posts in mostly all the neighboring  commnunities,  complete with never ending stats of how many sold, pending & back up offers are present each day complete with graphs  and long listings(not theirs) of what seemed like every house in town including scanned in looking new home model floor plans. I thought this was supposed to be a blog for folks to find out about a good restaraunt in town or boy scout troup or something? Should I be adding some more interesting articles  to what is there? or is it something these folks got on by paying lots of $$$ which wont allow other articles to be seen?

I think people are confused by Top Neighbor and sponsoring communities.  One is free and the other is not.

You can become a Top Neighbor just by posting regularly to a specific neighborhood.  It costs absolutely nothing to do this.  Add photos to your neighborhood and post there.  That's it.  Once you become the person with the most posts to a specific neighborhood, you become the Top Neighbor.  Of course, you have to keep posting there in order to maintain that position.

Sponsoring a community is as little as $9/community/month.  With this, you get all of your contact information at the top of the community page, etc.  It really is a sweet deal if you are trying to saturate a specific neighborhood.  You can't beat $9!

One is totally separate from the other.  You can be a Top Neighbor even if that neighborhood is sponsored by someone else.

Hope that clears it up for everyone!

Every time I go to Localism and try to sponsor a community, it says that they are not taking any new accounts. Consequently, my Partner and I have kind of given up on it.
