website check upLike many of my fellow ActiveRainers, I am always looking for new ways to improve my primary website, increase my visibility with Metro Atlanta home buyers, and provide relevant information for my current and potential clients.

About six months ago, I found a FANTASTIC online tool that will rate your website at no cost -- called Hubspot's Website Grader.  For those of you who need instant gratification, this tool will provide your website review in less than two minutes!

When I first used the tool, my overall web site score was only 49 (out of 100).  I followed many of their recommendations over the last few months and when I re-tested it today, my score increased to 72!  I know I have a lot more work to do, BUT I have had a significant increase in traffic over the last few months and I am in the top 5 Google search results on almost all of my focus keywords.

Here is a just a small sample of what the Website Grader will review:

1) Metadata -- Do you have too many keywords?  Are they relevant to your market and your business strategy?

2) Readability Level - Is the content on your website written in a way that your target audience will easily understand?

3)  Overall Google Rank / Google Indexed pages - Shows you how many pages on your website have been indexed by Google as well as an average rank.  It will also give your overall Google rank, based on traffic.

4)  Inbound links to your website - After being a part of ActiveRain for almost a year and learning from some of the top experts in the field, I understand the importance of having as many inbound links as possible to your site.  The Website Grader will let you know if your inbound links are actually working.

5) Blogsphere - Review of your blog and provides your blog ranking

6) Social Mediasphere - Reviews your bookmarks, rss feeds, etc.

The report also recommends that you are listed in several key directories, such as DMOZ, Yahoo Directory and ZoomInfo.

Now go get that check-up!  I hope that the Website Grader tool will be a helpful tool for you.  Please let me know what your score is and/or what you thought of the tool.

Hi Kerry, I have used this tool 4 times in the last few months...I am still only at 48.  Here are my questions from there...because I am still such a novice at this.  Did you join Yahoo; I'm not sure I want to spend the $300.00.  I did get on DMOZ.  Inbound links....which ones did you choose?  I picked three but they all cost $.

On Metadata, I'm not sure what to take out to make it less wordy...

I really need an SEO expert to look at my Webgrader report and look at my website and give me an overall plan.  Have you ever used someone like that?

Hi Cindy -- Thanks for stopping by!  I didn't join the Yahoo Directory (I'm hesitant to spend $300 ANNUALLY) but I did register on the DMOZ and ZooomInfo.

As for the inbound links, the Website Grader found 245 links to my website -- I'm sure I have a LOT more than 245, but I think that this tool is picking up on general websites.  For example, I probably have 400+ links to my website from ActiveRain, but maybe the grader is only considering ActiveRain to be one inbound link.  I'm not 100% sure how they come up with this #.

I didn't see anything about paying for inbound links (The inbound links I referred to were listed under Section II, Line F).

On the MetaData, I am over the limit according to the report, but my web site hosting company said that opinions vary as to how many keywords you should or shouldn't have -- so I'm just leaving mine as is.

Do you have someone who hosts your website?  If so, I would talk to them first about improving your SEO.  If they can't help, maybe they can recommend someone who isn't too expensive.  I've heard from several other people that they can really get pricey.  My suggestion would be to post your website on every social website out there.  I just read an AR post that might be helpful... http://activerain.com/blogsview/243774/Top-100-Social-Bookmarking-Sites

Keep plugging along!

This was perfect timing.  I don't know what my website is doing?  I get calls but they are mostly from friend's referrals and my blog on the local paper.  So today would be a good day to put my website to the test.  Thanks

Kerry, thanks for the good reminders, and the link.  Something else to put on the "to-do" list.  Was in Atlanta a few weeks ago and went by Pitty Pats Porch restaurant downtown..  Is it still good?  We didn't have time to stop in, but I sure remember how good this place was.  Have a great week.

Hi Charlie - thanks for stopping by my blog!  I have to say that I've lived in the midtown / downtown area of atlanta for over 15 years and I have never heard of Pitty Pats Porch... I'm going to have to do some research and find this place.  Just the name alone makes me want to go check it out!  I'll definitely let you know if it is still standing.  :-)

Thanks for the tip, Kerry.  We've been online and are constantly searching to improve.  Our current grade is 86 but there are still tips on how we can improve.  I will most definitley apply these.
