Last Saturday my son, Michael, and I flew to Istanbul Turkey on behalf of our Association. I was asked to attend the CEREAN (Central European Real Estate Associations Network) Conference and to help continue NAR's efforts to establish a relationship with Turkey's Istanbul Chamber of Real Estate Brokers. While the trip and Istanbul were truly fascinating, NAR's reason to show our presence at this Conference could not have been more clear.

We all know real estate is local but the real estate industry is truly global. Turkey, an emerging market, is eager to find ways to attract new clients to their real estate market, learn how we conduct our businesses and to interact with Realtors® from all over the world. It was intriguing to find how much they know about our markets.

While language barriers existed, the thirst for knowledge and information found ways to bridge our communication problems. NAR has the opportunity to insure that our members can conduct business in real estate markets all over the world through bi-lateral agreements (agreements that set forth how we conduct real estate transactions - currently, in more than 70 foreign markets) with assurances that there will be cooperation among the brokerage community.

Norman Flynn, 1990 NAR President and Joe Hanauer, both respected members of NAR continue tireless efforts through the IRPF (International Real Property Foundation) to provide new avenues for our Members to be profitable. NAR is considered the pre-eminent model and "the professional organization" of real estate associations for providing the ethical and business models for real estate. We owe much to these two gentlemen for most everything that we currently benefit from when our Members work outside of the United States borders. They, along with Carol Weinrich, Managing Director of NAR's International Operations Division have done a wonderful job of placing NAR at the forefront of international transactions. Carol helps, as day to day lead contact for NAR. She, too, is well known internationally and respected for her work.

If your business hasn't yet gone global it will. Ask your friends from Texas, Florida, California and any other U.S. border state if they've cooperated with a foreign country's real estate broker. It's a market few of our members of touched - so far!! Visit the International Networking Center in Orlando and see how you can meet new friends and be more profitable in an area most of us haven't considered. I'll see you there -- Jim Helsel, 2008 NAR Treasurer
