8 legged vagrant

By
Managing Real Estate Broker with Windermere Peninsula Properties

I was interrupted while blogging tonight by blood curdling screams. Was it a horror show, not exactly. My 14 year old daughter saw a spider in her room. I found her standing on her bed just pointing. I have never been afraid of spiders,so I suggested that we vacuum it up. She said no. It might crawl out tonight. I suggested getting it with a broom, countered with what if you miss? Then I said how about I catch it, and put it outside. Well, then it will live, and have lots of 8 legged descendants. I could not win. So I said then you take care of it if you are the expert. No response except the scream that it was now on the prowl.

So I took care of it.

That is my job. I am the Mom, and I am not afraid. I am certainly not going to let that 8 legged vagrant scare my daughter.

This incident brought me back to the reason I am an agent. I have clients everyday who do not know which way to move. Some are afraid, and others just need to be informed. That is my job, and I will not let the fear of a bad economy, housing market, or anything else get in the way of my clients getting a good night sleep. They don't have to worry about what is next, because they have me on their side!

Good. Now I know who to call the next time an 8 legged vagrant invades my place.  I'll be standing on top of the bed with your daughter!! terrified of 'em!!

My husband once had a pet tarantula. Luckily, it was before I knew him! Spiders don't scare me but I'm cautious. We do have the brown recluse and the black widow here, both of which can make a person pretty sick.

Well said. We do have to just step up and fix things when our clients don't know what to do. And good job with your daughter.  wouldn't have had as much patience. Thank goodness mine is not 18 and away at college. Let her and her roommates deal with their drama. LOL

My daughter did the same thing last night... IT WAS A HUGE spider in our carport. I know the neighbors probably wondered who ripped who's arm off!

She's such a girl!

If I see a spider outside it gets a free pass.  If I see a spider in my house its game on.

Dinah,

My daughter's scared of spiders, bee's or anything with more than 4 legs. I'm always there to take care of it for her....and love doing it!

It was my son that thought spiders were yuck; my daughter has always been intrigued with them.  We have a funny family story.  She used a shoe once to kill one and hundreds of babies poured out.  They were both screaming.  Now I had plastic surgery from a brown recluse bite years ago so I have ever reason to not like them. I do take action though; they don't live in my house.

You make a great analogy though.

Dinah-I have a 16 yr old daughter, and we have had similar experiences.  The difference is I don't like them either, and I try to get her to kill it.  That rarely works.  Then we laugh about it.  It's amazing something so small can create such chaos.  I hope I don't dream tonight about Marchel's story with babies coming out.  Yuk.

I can handle spiders, scorpions, even a snake..But a mouse! You will find me straddling the roof! I have been told I have a phobia about them. Years ago...an old boss caught one in a trap out in the warehouse...Then he brought it in, put it on top of a cracker and offer me a snack. It only happened once.

Dinah - I like it how you linked it to what we do as agents each and every day!  And it was MY big bad 6'3 220 SON that is afraid of spiders...eh eh eh ... Nothing more comical than watching the big bulk of a guy running for cover over a little thing like a spider!  ANd yes so what did you guys do with the spider???

I have three girls and none of them are willing to take on the creepy crawly things you might find in and around the home.  We live in Ohio and there aren't many house spiders that are truly dangerous or life threatening.  However, I am always interrupted to perform this task and as a good dad I do.  I'm seriously considering sending them out to "survival" training so they can handle these personal emergencies themselves.

Just to satisfy your curiosity. I climed on a step ladder then onto a curio cabinet It was a little wobbley, then I sucked it up with the hand held vaccumme. That still did not satisfy my daughter enough, so I emptied the bin outside away from the house. I should have told her I went way up into the hills, crossed a raging river and buried it in a hole.

Ok, I have to admit... until very recently I was terrified of spiders and also agreed that merely vacuuming them up was not enough, they could live in the bag and either have babies or *gasp* grow and grow and grow! SO, I if I was home alone and had to take care of the nasty buggers myself, I would arm myself with airesol hairspray (yea, I we're talking way back) and spray them as I vacuumed them up... just to be sure. And then I'd continue to spray as I vacuumed. Just for good measure!
