A riot nearly ..... Gas at $2.09 a gallon?

By

What could cause a near riot in a quiet Austin Texas neighborhood yesterday?  Well, some nice gas station owner dropped gas for a limited time yesterday to $2.09 a gallon.  Lines ensued, tempers flared, there was no shortage of angry words.

Humans are amazing creatures and in this case it was almost like a pack of hungry lions arriving at a freshly fallen antelope.  One of the local news teams was nearby and filmed some of the antics.  I saw a senior aged man getting all upset because he thought someone crowded in front of him, the police had to be called to "talk him down" and then all was quiet.

Funny how someone trying to do a good thing, the price drop by the station owner, can turn people into angry mean spirited animals.  Just goes to show you how little seperates the human animal from the jungle animal.

Today, I will gladly pay the $2.35 I saw in my neighborhood and be thankful its not $3.25 like it was a month or just a few weeks ago.   Happy Friday all..... keep smiling and remember you will get your turn at the pump.

Wow, Gail, gas is really getting "cheap" in Austin.  Remember when we thought $2.09 per gallon was an outrageous price?

It's slightly above three here in Vegas as you mentioned!  $2.35 would incite riots here!!

Shirley, I heard some rumors that it is supposed to drop again.  Yes, I remember outrage at $2.00 a gallon, now that would be a blessing.

Renee, I was surprised to see the prices in Vegas still above $3.00... I wondered if it had to do with state gasoline taxes?  I know the federal taxes are the same everywhere but I think the states each have a different amount charged.  (but I don't know what it is)

$2.09...?

We haven't been under $3.00 for years, and still aren't.   I paid $3.19 (which was the lowest station around) yesterday, and most of the stations are $3.25 - $3.39.

I would gladly pay $2.35, too!

Alan, perhaps you will see below that $3. a gallon soon?  I hope it goes down to less than $2.50 for everyone.

$2.09? Wow! I was grateful when the price of gas dropped down to 2.99 here in this area... You are right about people though. No rhyme or reason...

Hi Gail,

Those prices would bring out the worst in any consumer, especially from our area. A month go we were paying $3.89 a gallon. I thought I was getting a deal, until I reda this post, yesterday when I paid $2.69.

Were there any faitatiles at the pumps there?

Hi Gail... I remember that just before the 2004 presidential election gas got down well below $2.00, but immediately after the elections they snapped back to where they had been.  At the time I thought it was an effort on the part of the big oil companies to keep the Republicans in office by making us believe that things were not so bad.  I'm feeling kind of suspicious again... I think our friends in the big oil business are not anxious to face additional taxes on their string of record setting profits.  Let's all remember to fill up with inexpensive gas on November 4! :)

I'm with STEVE, I believe the gas prices are also temporary. But oh well... what can we do. I'll just enjoy it while it lasts. Woo Hoo!

Hi Gail!

That's a pretty good price for gas these days.  We had 2 stations dueling at $2 a gallon a week ago last friday and didn't have any of the long lines or angry masses. Wrote a post about, too.

Didn't hurt that the "duel" occured at midnight..lol!

HI Everyone,   I think Steve could have a point there.. history does tend to repeat itself, so we should all enjoy those pre-election prices while we can... I heard on the news recently that OPEC is cutting production by 1 million barrels due to decreased usage, in an attempt to drive prices back up... so this is a temporary decrease.

Gail, I heard the same thing about a decrease in production...what a shame.

Sure hope it continues to go down. Now diesel needs to start going down.  Maybe, just maybe groceries and everything else will start going down.
