Can you stage your own home for sale? Take this quiz and see how you do. Be honest with your answers; if you cheat, you may have to reduce your asking price $10,000 or more at the first price reduction!

  1. Can you describe who your buyers will most likely be?
  2. Can you create the style that will appeal to most of these buyers?
  3. Can you explain current trends in furniture style and colors?
  4. Can you arrange your furniture and accessories to highlight the best selling features in your home?
  5. Can you identify the "weaker" features of your home, and use creative problem solving to soften or improve their appearance?
  6. Can you do the selection and purchasing of the accessories needed to stage your home?
  7. Do you know how to arrange your new accessories to add drama to your home's listing photographs?
  8. Do you have the time to finish all staging work prior to listing your home?
  9. Will you follow through with staging your whole home without saying "that's good enough"?
  10. Do you believe that it is your responsibility to make sure your home shows well?

Wow, you are my blogging hero. What a great post. And the photos really tell it all. I'll be thinking of all that snow while I am sitting in the sun on my front porch sipping a lemonade this weekend.

Sue, those are great before and after photos. It's hard to believe that it's the same house.

I love your "after".  It is definitely easier to stage someone else's home. An objective eye is always helpful.

Sue - Your "after" picture speaks volumes to the impact a professional stager can make in an occupied home.  As always, you did a fantastic job.

Many people ask me, "Why can't I stage my own house?".

You can! Of course, you can SELL your own home too. But it takes an enormous amount of effort and research to do so. Hiring a professional means you get professional results.

We need to sit over a cup of tea and talk. Oh no, I just saw an image of that and it wasn't pretty. What we need to do is sit with cups of tea in our hands and talk.

I like that response:)  Next time someone tells me they can stage their own house, I'll be sure to remind them that they can sell the house on their own too.......

Thank you for reading and commenting Joanna!

I'm guilty of it too...when I go to a craft fair I'll look at some jewelry and say, "Oh I could make that."  But WILL I make it? Will it look as good as the one professionally done?

Nope and nope.

Hey Sue - that is true value you provided...what ever they paid you wasn't enough. Night and day. And a very smart post by the way...I better get my reading bike and start peddling while reading all your links...to make sure I didn't miss anything vitally important like "when you coming to California?". You get 5 points from me for brilliance!

Hi Sue-   I don't think I can pass your quizz -- you are welcome to stage my home any time!  You are very talented -- and your blog illustrates your point.  I think we are in for another storm in NH -- but there is hope, my bulbs are starting to pop through the ground -- stage right

WOW  Sue - the transformation is amazing!!!  Removing the island made a huge difference in the flow and sense of space.  You rule.

In fact I love the quiz so much I think everyone should give it to every realtor and homeowner they know.  I think it should be posted everywhere.

Sue - I'd like to present you with this COOKIE AWARD for asking all the right questions!  A+

My tulips were coming up under the last snow melt.  But, I heard through the grapevine all we'll get here along the coast is LOADS of rain and lots of heavy wind.  Not so sure about those living inland at this point.  I think many parts are going to get clobbered by this storm this time around.

I LOVE your before and after pictures, Sue - you do a great job with those.  I don't think I could pass your test with flying colors.  I'm still toying with the notion of 'staged to live' I read about.....

Jackson, thanks so much for your comment. This house should be in the MLS very soon...It's so smart to stage BEFORE you list.
