Barbara, you got it right.  The station was directly across Main Street from the First Methodist Church, between Arch and Center Streets.  We use to park in the station when we went to church as they were never open on Sunday.  Remember when almost all businesses closed on Sunday. 

See the house in the background at the far right, I think that is the house that Don Thompson lived in at one time.

I cannot read what brand of gas they sold when the picture was taken but, if I remember right, during the 1940s and 1950s it was a Texaco station.  I can read the Kelly Springfield Tires sign.

Notice the car on the ext ream left, looks like it is up on an outdoor lift being serviced.  In those days, lots of service stations had their "grease pits", where they did oil changes and grease jobs, outside.  I even remember some where they were a hole in the ground and one just drove the car a straddle it, kind of like the modern quick-lube places but outdoors.  Or the car may be on a display stand and they are selling used cars along with being a service station. 

Surely someone who is a car buff can tell us the model years of the cars to give a good estimate of when the picture was taken.

This building was torn down around 1965 when the Peoples Insurance & Investment Co., Inc. building was built there. My father was the manager of that business. After becoming Dobbins Insurance, Inc. the building was remodeled and enlarged in 1980. Now (2010), the building is Carder Law Firm (George Carder).
