Fall is the time for Tarantulas to migrate.....

I once had a listing that I ended up owning.  That is unusual and this particular house was not one that you'd want to own.  It was an old farm house type with high ceilings, wood floors, large double-hung windows, ramshackle doors and on the edge of town surrounded by big trees.

To some of you it sounds like a dream house....right?  Well according to the people who lived there it was not.  She was wanting a better house.  One of the reasons she wanted a better house was because of the tarantulas.  She said they came through the cracks in the walls and windows and doors and invaded her property.

They'd even get in bed with her.                                                                     tarantula

She said at first she was terrified because, as you know, a tarantula is a gigantic spider.  Later on she decided they were harmless so she said she'd just scoop them up and put them outside so they could be on their way!!

Imagine lying in bed with a tarantula crawling around on the covers.  Imagine that furry feel as you picked the little creature up!!

She said they only come through once a year, usually in the fall months....right about now.  So every year at this time I remember her, her tarantulas, her old house and her class.  She was the type who wouldn't hurt a spider!  I didn't own that house very long, either, because I shivered everytime I thought about it.  It is now history, torn down with a newer one in its place.

I too am afraid of those big furry spiders, there are a few that live in my area, some in our barn and my grandson loves them so that corner of the barn is now a "protected area". I just give it a wide berth when I go out to the barn.  :)  so far it hasn't decided to take up residence closer to the house.

The tarantulas crawling around in the Fall are the males. They are looking for a mate- the female mostly stays down in her den. So give the guys a break they're just lonely.

Gail, isn't it amazing that your grandson loves the furry spiders!  That just shows we probably pass on our fears to our children.  He probably thinks they feel good and you know they are harmless so if you don't make him afraid, he won't be!  Wonderful!

Jim, a tarantula is just a big ant?  Right?  Ha ha

Michele, it does give me bad memories but I think I've matured.  If I meet a tarantula now, I'll be less afraid!  I HOPE!

Mary!  You saw one here in Searcy!  Just proves my blog is true, I guess!

Leslie, what interesting info!  I have no idea.  We all know that all males are sorta loco when they are lonely.  LOL

Greg, glad you liked the Halloween story!

Barbara - According to Wikepedia, tarantulas are found in tropical and desert regions of the world. I never saw one outside of a pet store. But, I do have a neighbor who recently got bit by a brown recluse!

Mary, they are harmless.  The lady said so!!

Debi, harmless, completely harmless.  Now brown recluse is different.  You can't see those suckers and they'll do you damage!

Carol, Wikipedia needs to say AND Arkansas.  We have some.  We also have the brown recluse.  I hope your neighbor isn't totally incapacitated as is fairly common when they bite you.

Barbara,

Good story!  Sounds like someone had a LITTLE pest problem.  I do believe most people would freak.  But the Tarantulas that are common to our area are harmless.  However, I am sure few would let them live.  That was pretty cool of her!

Barbara:  Up here in Virginia, it's the big hairy wolf spiders.  They aren't too bad when they are males, but catch a peek of a pregnant female and you will scream and jump on a chair.  They are terrifying to catch a glimpse of.  I saw one last month that was sitting innocently in the entrance to my kitchen.  I walked past, saw it out of the corner of my eye and screamed...running to the next room.  My husband kidded me and went to see for himself.  He didn't scream, but he was freaked out too!

Josh and Kathy, they are harmless here too but they freak people out so much they get killed.  It has been a long time since I've seen one but if I do see one I look for a brick to smash it!  But perhaps I'm a kinder, gentler person now and will let it live.......

Chris Ann, please pretty please!  If the hairy wolf spider is uglier than the tarantula, we've got to see a picture.  Surely you can find one on the net and attach it to a comment!  Thanks for reading.
