Ladies, have you ever been honey, baby, sweetied to death during a sales presentation?

The last time you bought a car, did you hear ...

"Honey, when will your husband be here to make a decision?"

"Baby, who will be paying for this for you?"

"Sweetie, what color would you like? Don't worry about how much it is."

Well, here is a funny video poking fun at that kind of sales guy!>lmo

26 Comments on Sexist Sales Approach!

It's the testerone combined with social ignorance.

We can't help the testosterone, but we can get educated and courteous.  I was raised by two strong women.  Let me tell you, I learned early in life that a woman can "lay the smack down" too.

Empowerment to all of us!

Great advertisement - you need to speak to the decisionmaker - and more often than not, it isn't the man of the house.

Ahhh yes, the sexist salesman... gotta love it. I can't tell you how many car lots we've walked off of because the salesman wouldn't address me when trying to sell. Of course, it's not all the men, some women perpetuate the ditzy can't do anything for myself stereotype!

Richard - stong women raise strong and courteous men.

Ryan - yes, it seems that when it comes to Real Estate that women are often the decision maker.

Alisha - walking away is the best recourse. Hit 'em where it hurts ... in their wallets :-)

Notice the response of the potential customer. This action is often seen when the female of the species finds herself confronted with such idiots.   :)

Lara, this was funny, but if women would take the bull by the horn, right off the bat and let their salesperson know that their pet names are not appreciated, maybe they would think first and be more courteous to the next female client. I am proud to have raised a very outspoken, but polite daughter who isn't afraid to speak up for herself. It only helps each us us individually to do so, but all of us collectively as well.

Vickie, I agree. Your daughter sounds like a go getter.

I sold cars for a couple of years and you would be surprised to know that the sexism goes all the way to the top. It seems that the industry is the last of a dying breed. I'm glad Real Estate is not that way.

I agree with Vickie.  Set the tone immediately, and you won't be disrespected by the salesperson.  I disagree with Lara on the point that Real Estate is not that way.  I have had plenty of older women refer to me as "hon" or "sweetie" because I am a younger man.  I usually chuckle and remind them of who I am and get on with my job.

Matthew, good point. I guess RE is more female driven. I don't discriminate ... except against stupid people ... lol :-)~

I tell my gals and guys (I've seen some guys being treated like a piece of meat too). Be professional, be the most knowledgeable and be honest. But if they're one of the 2 this year who want to buy a $300,000 mortgage with you b/c you look good, then look the best of all your competition. I think that there are a lot in the community that wish that they still got a few of those calls. My point being, never cheapen yourself, be professional, and if you're still their "honey" or "sweetie" at least close the deal for putting up with it.

Larry, good point. It's not always meant in a bad way. Sometimes it's endearing ... or at least tolerable.

Love the video. My wife hates it when salesmen treat her this way. She is usually more than happy to point out to them how dumb she thinks they are.

That is funny.  Most of dealers I have worked with do a good job, but I am a guy.

Hello Lara: I've also been honey, baby, sweetied to death by fellow agents (men and women alike) and I ABSOLUTELY HATE IT! Honestly people, show a little bit of respect and professionalism!

What a funny video! And it is touchy subject for many women, isn't it? I am glad you found the humor in though. Thanks.

Robert - for some reason buying cars is perceived as a man's job.

Cheryl - you said it!

Terrie - you have to be able to find the humor in everything. Especially to be able to laugh at ourselves!

Lara- this commercial ran for a long time in our area- Raleigh, NC. It was hugely popular. My husband plays hockey on the same team as the sales manager for Johnson Lexus (the ad's dealership). All the guys do BADGER imitations, they're even thinking of naming the team the Badgers!. I've had computer salesmen treat me like this, only looking at my husband, who knows NOTHING about computers and leaves all the decisions to me. Guess where I didn't buy my last computer? Great post.

Linda - that is hilarious! The guys where I work all do Badger imitations too!

It seems Mr. Badger has his own cult following. I wonder if sales guys like that ever realize their lost income from women?

Lara, not to worry, men get the honey babe sales approach too. We just don't receive so much from men...

I think it's happened to all of us. I got a kick out of the video, even if it's sometimes sadly too true.

People forget that women spent like 85% of anything that was like brought last year. I wrote a post about it this year Womens Buying Power. Great post. Have a great weekend.

Christine, I'm glad you enjoyed it. I've worked with a couple of cheesey guys like this. They make you want to take a shower after shaking their hand ... slimey!
