If there's anything I have learned from my friends and family it's the reminder that even when we're faced with a down market we should always be looking for the opportunity.

My great grandfather was an immigrant who had moved here from Russia in his early 20’s and soon after sent for my great grandmother.  When he finally set foot on American soil, he was determined to succeed in this country…to live the American Dream.

All I can remember from the rest of his story is that my great grandfather sought out opportunity during a time when many Americans barely were able to make ends meet.  It was during the Great Depression.  He was able to identify what people needed and built a successful business based on that need…a paint store, right in the heart of Detroit Michigan.   His drive and his belief system created his success in hard times.  All four of his children, including my grandmother were able to get a college education, even in a time when it was very uncommon for woman to attend university.Intention leads to Action leads to Success

And even today, a friend of mine, Zera Starchild, who has an online business called    Doorway Publications has found success in a down market.  At the last Women Entrepreneurs Institute’s Educational Summit back in March 2008, Zera spoke about seeking out the opportunity in a slowing economy.  She mentioned that her business had improved since the market change.  Most of her customers were from European countries where the Euro is stronger than the Dollar.  So while some Humboldt County California business owners saw a reduction in sales, Zera experienced an increase.

So when times get tough, or the future seems bleak, I always remember my great grandfather and the fact that he defied all odds and refused to wallow in the despair.  He rose above and slowly grew and built wealth for his family.

Don’t give up on your ability to be successful, even in real estate.  Most real estate markets never come to a screeching halt.  However you may need to adjust your focus.  See if you need to change or pick up a new niche, really study your market so you can continue to grow your wealth for your family as well as give to those less fortunate than you.

And no one expects you to be positive all the time.  But the more you focus on the wonderful things in your life and dreams of the life you desire.  You will be on the right track to success.

As a good friend of mine, Gabrielle Parkinson (a Business and Life coach) always says:  “Success breeds success”.  Hang out with positive successful people and start noticing the positive shift in your life.

Hi Jessica,

As I've been reading through the posts today on AR, it's so wonderful to see that many people are continuing to find the bright side of things, just as you have in your post.

Don't forget me if you learn of anyone moving to "The OC!"

Couldn't agree more with Michael..... thanks for the "chin up" thoughts! There are a lot of folks looking on the bright side of the 4th quarter...including me. Keep up the good work!

Hi Jessica,

Good words.  I always remember my father who sold real estate in the skinny late 80's early 90's years.  He loved doing it so we just had some skinny years! KM

Being optimistic makes things so much easier.  Sure there are tough things going on, but how will focusing on the negative help anybody?

Michael - Thanks!  It sure beats wallowing in all the fear and uncertainty.

Loren - Your welcome.  I figure there's always enough business out there for those who want it and go for it.

Barb - I'm glad I could share this story with you.  Every time I even think about the challenges with this economy - I just think if dear old gramps.

Kristin - I think that's the positive spin to this.  If we can build a business in more challenging times, just think about what our lives will be like when things pick up again.  I'm rearing to go :)

Li - Your welcome.  I thought the photo was fitting.

Norma - Me too.  That's why I stick to reading your blogs too.

Gary - Great point.  Now is the time to start figuring out where the opportunties are (niches that is).

Christine - Yeah your right.  Negative focus only makes things worse.  Although we're allowed a few moments of grumbling here and there, as long as it's only briefly.

Heather - LOL - I'm happy you appreciate the story.

Lourdes - I think it's these kind of stories that help remind us that things aren't as bad as we think and even if they get there...we still have the power to become successful
