I'm looking to both bring up some topics and provide info as well as seek answers from anyone with experience on this matter. There are a couple questions:

1. How important is it to keep your site hosted in one spot?  I've heard that SE's prefer to see that a domain is stable and that the length of time the site has been live, as well as the length of time it sits at one host can be of some help. Any thoughts or experience from anyone?

2. How important is it to use one host over another?

3. Does interlinking with other sites at the same host help, hinder, or draw even?  Some of this gets down to very technical issues of how close your ip addresses are. It is my understanding that the closer the ip addresses, the less beneficial interlinking becomes.  Any thoughts on this?

any other related questions that I am missing?

I have another related question for some experts. I have several domains and websites hosted under the same godaddy hosting account. They all seem to rank pretty well for their specific terms and topics. Is there any danger in having domains use shared hosting when it comes to search engine rankings? Or do they even look at that at all?

I have never heard of it making a difference as far as leaving a site with one host/isp.  It does make a difference as to how long your site has been "live" but nothing you can do about that one.  As far as stability it helps to pay the registration fee for longer than one year - that shows stability and means you are not as likely to be a spam site.

Question #3, yes it can make a difference having multiple sites on the same server/ip address. Unless you pay extra (small fee) then you are probably sharing an ip address with other sites also.  When you link them together, search engines may not value the links as much.  Be careful that you at least have links from/to other sites (AR is great for that!) otherwise the engines may see this as a "ring" just for links and that can really count against you!

Alan,

If you have sites all hosted on the same account at Godaddy.com, they are usually on the same IP address.  It is my understanding that links between sites on the same ip address will not count or will count much less than sites that are more separated on the web. The assumption from the Search Engine, is that these sites are operated by the same person/organization, so links from yourself to yourself should be of any real importance when it comes to link popularity.

If you get unique IP addresses for each site that are very different, than that is best. Even if you get unique IP addresses from the same host, they may be so similar (i.e. 207.98.145.14 and 207.98.145.15), that it will not make a difference and be counted as if they were on the same IP.

You are probably ranking well on your sites right now based on other factors. It is not a negative thing to have your sites on the same IP address - you just can't expect the links between your sites to help your rankings much if any.

Eileen,

Thanks for reminding me about the fact that having your domains renewed for longer periods helps in the sense that the SE's feel the site is long-term/stable and therefore deserves more attention.
