In action

Every first Tuesday of the month, I picked up my box of gloves, jackets, hard hats, supply of trash bags, clippers plus a good supply of bottled water and head out to Box 383 (See photo below), along Highway One, about 3 miles north of San Geronimo along the Pacific Coast, just north of Cayucos, CA, to meet fellow Realtors for our monthly highway clean-up.

The exercise is a dedicated effort on the part of the members from the Scenic Coast of Association of Realtors.  Member Realtors from different real estate agencies or brokerages and affiliates from title companies show up to help on different weeks.  The coordinated cooperative leads to a cleaner highway and a more pleasing experience for the motorists and travelers who stop to enjoy the views by the coast.

At the end of the clean-up, we arranged the bags neatly by Box 383, and I contact Cal Trans to pick up the bags. You will surprised at the range of items that have been left along the highway.  We found big itmes like sofa, tires, bar-b-que pit and even snakes! Of course, we left the snakes (obviously, the live ones) alone.

Doesn't the coast look more beautiful without any trash?

Sherry, what a great cause you are part taking, no wonder that area is so beautiful.I bet this is one of the few professions that gives and gives to the various communities, I never hear other professions doing so many good things.

Thank you, Endre.  It does feel good to be able to give, plus it's a great work-out.  I also belong to the local Rotary club and we help keep the local beaches clean.  The local school students, Cayucos School, is now partnering with our club to keep the beaches clean.  I know our local association is committed to doing this every year.

I spent many a weekend cleaning highways through the Adopt-A-Highway program when I was in college. Now? Not so much. I have to let the younger generation have their fun.

Sherry,

God bless you and the other realtor volunteers for doing your part to keep our coast beautiful!  It really is shameful how quickly trash collects along the highways because of careless individuals...but thanks to the great citizens of the world such as yourself we are able to see the true beauty of our coastal towns!  Thanks for your dedication to keep our coast beautiful!

Jim, that's very admirable. I think every little bit counts. It didn't matter if you volunteered during college or now. We are all part of the big equation in keeping Mother Earth clean.

Michelle, thank you! Frankly, I am not the only one.  I have more photos but they didn't turn out as well, so I posted a few.  There are a few dedicated folks who come out every month to help me.  I know it's necessary and am trying to continue this task as long as I can.

Sherry, the region is so beautiful that's it's hard to imagine that anyone would think of defacing the landscape. Your service to the community, alongside and with your colleagues, is most honorable. Hopes for a great week ahead for you.

Happy Halloween, David. That's true. If we continue our efforts, and get our word out, more will be aware and hopefully, we will all do our little bit to keep the place looking the way nature intends it to be. Thank you for your comments. We are back on the highway next Tuesday, Nov 4, to do our usual.  Hope your week went well too.

I use to help with the Adopt-a-Highway program out here when I was in college. Now I have had to move on and leave it to the next generation of college students. Fortunately, they're still out their volunteering.
