$60

I don't often re-blog but, this one caught my eye and reminded me of the post that I wrote yesterday:  At It Again!  I keep my 'mad money' in a 'secret' compartment in my wallet and before my boys went off to college, it would just sit there for months and months!  Now, every time that they come home from college, I spend my 'mad money' on them so that I can keep our family budget intact (and keep my CFO hubby from nagging me)!

Let's give it shot!

I would like to challange all of my friends here in the RAIN to try this!  Let's begin on November 1 and go through the end of the month.  Now this is going to mean no new outfits for Thanksgiving (unless you go to your favorite consignment shop!) and will require alot of discipline--especially on MY part!

The election will be over in a few days and I think that we're going to see consumer confidence rise.  This should get some of our buyers off the fence.  When we start seeing more closings in 45 - 60 days, we'll appreciate that we're not in the 'credit card hole' from overspending our 'allowance' money!

Let's try it!

Via Michael Mullin ~ Spokane WA Home Loans | ~ Lake Spokane ~ Suncrest:

I'm going to share a secret with you - my allowance is $60 per month.  That's right - $60 dollars to spend on dinning out, movies, coffee, and anything else I may want to treat myself to.

I wasn't always this frugal. In fact, my family can overspend with the best of them!  Fortunately my wife and I decided to stop the crazy spending and put ourselves on a financial diet.

Should your allowance be $60?  Well that depends.  If you are putting 10% of  your gross income into savings every month and have no credit card debt I'd say you could probably bump that figure up.  If, on the other hand, you have less than 3 months worth of your income sitting in your regular savings account for emergencies, have any credit card balances, or are saving less than 10% of your gross income I'd suggest your number should be less than $60 until you can achieve those three benchmarks.

So how exactly do you get yourself on such a financial diet and then maintain? It's called "CASH ONLY."

For all your personal expenditures you must pay with cash from your wallet or pocket book.  The amount of your allowance is not the critical part of this diet, it is the use of cash that is key.  Having a finite amount of paper in your pocketbook that you can see every time you reach for some more is the only way to reign in the spending.

Pay yourself the allowance on the first of every month and then have fun!  Of course, when the cash runs out you are done for that month.  No reaching for the debit or credit card when you run out mid-month.  No cash, no play!

We implemented this for our entire family, including our 13 year old and 10 year old.  It's amazing the choices each individual will make when it is THEIR allowance on the line. There will be times that we drive through McDonalds' because one person wants to waste their money on some fries and the rest of us will not order anything and wait to get home to snack.

For each of the last 6 months I've managed to spend $20 or LESS of my allowance.

My passion is my involvement with Spokane County Search and Rescue, so I put away $40 per month to buy my SAR toys (er...equipment!).  I never realized I could be THIS frugal until I  had a finite amount of cash in my pocket.

How low do you think you could get your allowance to?

Debe - that would be a challenge - just with groceries alone. However, I have been shopping conscientiously, not buying un-needed things or items. No one wants to have huge credit card debt. I will do what I can here!

Debe, month to date I've managed to only spend $18!!!!  Keep in mind I'm only talking about discretionary spending on myself - not groceries or other household expenditures.

I almost at zero expense for the month but then my wife (we work together) said "I'm grumpy, let's go have Mexican food for lunch!"  Well, that cost me $10 but at least she was happy - and that's a good thing!

Debe-Oh, I so want to play...My problem is caffeinated soft drinks...I spend $3 a day on those alone. (and they must come out of a fountain, no cans or liters please) Isn't that awful?  I'm at $90 a month just on my Dr. Pepper.  Okay, I'll do it, but can I have $100 a month?  I have no credit card debt. Hubby wouldn't dream of it...pays them off before we get the bill in the mail:)  (Engineer, go figure).  So, since we behave, can I have $100 a month?  If so, I'll play.  However, I'm hitting the mall this week. I NEED new clothes, lol.  Really I do.  I'm usually so tight I squeak.

Do you ever listen to Dave Ramsey?  He's great.  Finance guru from Nashville.

Hi Debe-This is a really awesome post. It sure does make you stop and think. We all have to watch our pennies especially these days. I can live on $60.00 a month because I've lived on far less for many years. I love Elizabeth's comment. Too funny.

Hi Cheryl!  Thank you so much!  Yes, my mom is doing great!  As for the challange--I am addicted to iced coffee so, now is the time for me to decide if I want to save my $60. or drink it!

Hi Sharon!  Girl, I can't possibly count groceries in this challange!  I've got two college sons who I routinely visit Costco and load up for when they come home.  I'm talking about pedicures, manicures, lunches out (NON-business related!) and COFFEE! ;-)

Michael:  That is so awesome!  I don't count groceries as discretionary money but, I will say that I don't do too well when I pass Starbucks!

Elizabeth:  Have you ever heard of Sundrop?  Well, I am a caffeine addict--either coffee or Sundrop (which is packaged locally and sold mostly in NC)!  I buy it by the case when it's on sale!  My CFO hubby won't allow us to have credit card debt either!  Sometimes I call him Scrooge but, I know he's right and it's really what I WANT to do too!

Pat:  Good for you being able to do that for years--I am SO impressed because this is truly a challange for me!  Thanks for stopping by!

Debbie-We have Sundrop here as well!  So, can I have $100 a month to do the challenge?  Please?  That's only $25 per week.  After spending $3 a day on Dr. Pepper, that will leave me $4 per week, LOL..gee, wonder what I am going to cut back on?   So, boss, what do you say?  :)

Elizabeth!  LOL!  I'll tell you what--we BOTH have a caffeine addiction and what do you say we try to help each other out with a dual-cessation?!  Seriously, if someone is holding me accountable, I perform--so, what say YOU?

Elaine:  Thanks!  So, are you in too Elaine?!

Debe-I say yes...but can we make it $80?  ROTFL...I'm serious. I'll do eighty.  We'll hold each other accountable.  You won't believe this one-Home Inspector called me at 7:30 tonight, wanting to meet so he could set up his Radon equipment at a home I just sold. Out I go, he sets up, I'm on my way home, see TJ Maxx, WHIP the car in, RUN in, looking for clothes, since I won't be able to spend after Friday, LOL...walked out with a turtleneck:(  No time to shop this week....I NEED new clothes.  So, lets do $80, wanna?  We have no debt, so what the heck, right?

Elizabeth!  MY, you do drive a hard bargain--I have but, one (or twenty, whichever way you want to look at it!) small problem--how do I go $80 with the post titled $60?!!!

And, I didn't really think about sneaking out this week and doing the midnight shopping!!  Are you afraid someone will 'catch' you out--overspending before the bet begins?!!  jk!  I am in serious need of some new clothes as well but, I think I'm going to have to wait until 2009 and maintain with what I have--it's not like I don't have enough, it's just that I need specific, UPDATED articles!  That's a WHOLE other story!

Debe, I'm in.  I don't generally spend money on fast food, Starbucks, or anything like that.  It will be interesting to see what I actually do spend it on.  Guess I'd better go today to get some warmer things for high school son's soccer season.  It gets so cold even though we're deep in the south.  It's that humid cold that chills your bones - brrrrr.

Debe-Okay...I'll do it.  $60 a month.  You could always edit your title, LOL.  You and I will have to start drinking coffee from home, no carbonated beverages, etc. OUCH.  I need clothes.  Shall we say, I've had a "growing spurt"...hee hee.  Too many Klondike Bars near bedtime.  I will NOT buy any clothes after Friday.  Let's do it and laugh all the way to the bank:)  Won't our husbands be proud of us?

Hi Heather!  Glad you're in!  I'm anxious to see if I can do it myself!  Like Elizabeth, I'm worried about the clothing 'allowance'!

Hey Elizabeth!  Funny girl!  Can you do it?!  I don't know if I can but, I am certainly going to try!  When RE is busy, it's easy to do that because I never have time to make stops for myself other than the coffee which I treat my clients to as well!  Right now...

You know, I've had the same swelling issue!  My problem is munching late at night too--while blogging!  Maybe we should write a post about that?!

And, YES, our hubbies will be SO proud of us!  That'll definitely be worth the effort.

This is a really great post.  Problem is, I don't have a problem spending on the little things on a daily or monthly basis.  I just like to buy big, giant expensive toys!

Hi Lisa!  LOL!  You've got the 'man's big toy' problem too, huh?!  If I weren't an iced coffee junkie, I thinnk I would be okay here too!  I guess I'm about to find out!

Hey Teresa!  Nov.1--YEP!  Let's do it!  I'm sort of excited that I've got some buddies to help me get over my caffeine addiction that I've had for over 25 years!  It's certainly worth it to me--if I can just keep from spending on the boys when they're home for Thanksgiving!

Hi Linda!  WooHoo!  Hey, this should give you another consumer avenue to take--a little consumer spending challange!  I don't mind if you take it and run with it too!  We can get more folks involved and now would be the PERFECT time to do so!

Debe-Okay girl, I"m cranking up for our challenge. I hit pay dirt shopping today:)   Also, I'm already cutting back on the Dr.Pepper...just 2 a day!  Now, to get to one by Saturday?  Hey, I had a thought. I have RELO clients in all weekend, (actually 2 weekends in a row).  I have to take them to lunch. Does that count?  Surely not, right?  If so, looks like I'm bringing cans of soup to warm up in someones microwave while looking, ROTFL...Getting excited!

How many takers do you have so far?

Okay Debe, I have two days to go on a shopping spree, do you want to come along??!?!??! You probably think I'm a nut but one of my weaknesses is purchasing baking pans; yep the secret is out... I love to bake cakes, pies, muffins, etc... and well you know when you use those pans often you have to replace them too. It's funny where I find these things and I am happy to report that I was able to replace my jumbo muffin pans last weekend (my original ones are probably 15 years old) and I purchased a new bundt pan yesterday because I found one with it's own plastic cover and metal pan.. how cool is that!?!?!? I really like the different shapes of the bundt pans... Okay tell me I'm weird, I can take it!

Hi Elizabeth!  You're cheatin' on me!  I have no time before Saturday to go by new clothes!!  And, I haven't even thought about cutting back yet--I'm going to try cold turkey!!  Im pretty slammed this weekend too and I know that will keep me out of trouble!!  Your $60. allowance is personal--not business--the two shall not be mixed!  So, when you're taking your clients out for lunch and dinner, have an iced cold Dr. Pepper on your business!!!

Hey Teresa!  I'm SO glad you're in!  And, YES, I do think you're nuts!!  JK!  I went through a Pampered Chef phase and went to every party--heck, I even hosted a few--and bought every gadget that I could buy!  Believe it or not, some of them are still in wrappers!  My most favorite of ALL are the stone products and I DO LOVE my stone bundt pan!

I wish my weakness was pans--so does my hubby!  Mine is SHOES!  You can buy several pans for my one pair of jumbo shoes!!!
