Many people start their tour of Colonial Williamsburg at the wonderful and interactive Visitor Center, or if you are more adventurous, like myself and already have a background in history, try driving directly into Historic Williamsburg and do some exploring on your own. Be prepared for large groups most times of the year including LARGE groups of children. Below are a few images taken on a recent excursion to Williamsburg.

Below is The Public Hospital for Persons of Insane and Disordered Minds. This building was the first devoted solely to the treatment of mental illness in the new world. The first patient was admitted October 12, 1773. The architecture of the building matches closely the Wren Building at the nearby College of William and Mary.

Among the many period reproductions of 18th century colonial transportation is the example below of a traveling coach used by wealthy residents of Williamsburg.

Upon it's completion in 1722, The Governor's Palace was considered one of the finest homes in Colonial America. It has been home to seven Royal Governor's, Patrick Henry and also Thomas Jefferson until the Capitol was moved to Richmond. The Palace has also served as a hospital twice during The Revolutionary War. The original building was destroyed by fire in 1781. The Restoration below was completed in 1934.

Fall is a wonderful time to visit Colonial Williamsburg, wood smoke is in the air, the leaves are changing and you can almost picture what our nation must have been like some 300 years ago.

MAN! There is so much history back there compared to out here in the west.  I would love to take a 6 month vacation and tour all of the historic locations back there.

Steve-

I am certainly blessed to live here in Virginia because of my interest in history. If you ever come out here let me know, I was a history major I can show you some things the average Tourist never finds.

Be careful.  When I go there, I will definitely call you. You must look at things around town a little different that the average person.  Thanks for the offer.

Williamsburg must be marvelous Bryant -architecture is so fascinating! Your photos are superb; I get by rather dissatisfied at times with my amateurism - but I can't do everything - which is why we have professional photographers - like you!

Williamsburg is a lot of fun.  And it's particularly beautiful during the holidays.  I went during December one year.  Just lovely.

I love Historic Williamsburg!  It is really neat how the workers there can stay in character and not crack a smile.  Great place to visit time and again.

I love History as well, and I am certainly blessed to live in an area that is both full of History and is also very photogenic.

Deborah-

Thank you for the kind words, we all have a calling and photography seems to be mine. Take care and have a great day.

Karen-

Colonial Williamsburg has changed a lot from what I remember as a kid visiting with school. Winter is especially beautiful as they decorate for Christmas! Enjoy your visit!

Chris Ann-

Winter is the best time to visit, in my opinion as there are less people and the town is really lovely in the Christmas decorations and if we are really lucky, snow.

Debbie-

It is amazing how they stay in character the whole time, very interesting from a living history point of view. Personally I prefer the architecture but my hat is off the the re-enactor's as it must be a difficult job.

Bryant,

I also love living in Virginia. I live in Portsmouth and there is a lot of history here as well. I am in Williamsburg (we call it billyburg) quite often and I absolutely love measuring and estimating historic roofs. The carpentry is amazing. Being a roof nerd I get excited about slate!

One of my favorite places to visit! I love Williamsburg and like to travel that way especially during the holidays. A colonial Christmas is awesome! I love the shops that use real fruit & greenery to decorate, carolers, nutcrackers (have you seen the George Washington & Thomas Jefferson ones?) & of course the food! Would love to be there right now!

I have to say I feel so fortunate to live so close to the historic triangle! Don't forget to check out a "plantation" or two also!
