I have seen several people wondering why some blog posts earn 200 and others earn 225. Well this has been answered a few times by the AR staff and I think other people. Brad Andersohn officially announced the Channels features here.
The extra 25 points is earned when you put your posts in the new Channels. I think they just want everyone to be putting their posts there and maybe in the future they might remove the old method of posting, time will tell. I promised a while back I would write a long post trying to clarify why they are moving to Channels and hopefully I can do that yet tonight. But in the mean time, yes, you get 25 bonus points for using the Channels feature.
OK you are probably wondering about the free points and so far I have done nothing but explain how you can earn more points, so heres the secret...
You can go back to old posts and put them in the Channels! While that might not be a secret for some, it is certainly lesser known. Although I only joined 3 months ago I have written 250 posts. So I did some thinkin' of course and realized that since they added this feature I added probably 50 posts but that left 200 other entries that aren't sorted into Channels! Hmm... 200x25 = 5000 points! Thats quite a few points.
Now you might be accusing me of being a point monger but there is a method to all this madness. I remember asking around when they first proposed the new Channels and I asked whether I should go back and change mine and they said yes I should. The point is that Google has indexed your posts before but if you help Google out and sort them into the Channels there is some huge SEO potential here. I have already noticed a small effect coming from the Consumer Buying and Selling Channels.
So like I said sure there is free points here for the taking. Maybe not 5000 but some people have 500 posts (10,000 points!) Now you might argue that AR isn't being fair but they are trying to aggressively market this new feature and they want all of our great content sorted out. They don't have time to go through 100,000 members posts so its up to us to help them.
So earn your points. Get your SEO bonus. Help Active Rain sort this mess out!
(stay tuned for Part 2 to this... I think its gonna be good!)
*edit* Here is how you do it. (click on the pictures for a larger view!)
Go back to your old posts by going into your blog and just flipping back to the start. Then you can just move forward from there.
Then you want to hit edit on the blog post you want to change. Then you should see this.
Now just pick where you think this post would be most appropriate. I have been working on my home town and trying to bring that city up. You can try this as well/ I dont know that it works or not. Regardless once its in here it doesnt matter from an SEO standpoint where it is, this is about reaching out to the consumer. You want to put it in a place that they can find it. Google will find it no matter where you hide it!

Lisa. I updated the post. What you want to do is go into the blog posts and edit them and then add a channel. This really will make a huge difference.
Like I said I am planning a follow up to this post. I have something planned that will really contribute to what the AR staff has been trying to do with these Channels. Stay tuned...
Ilyce thanks for the comments. That is one of my favorite films. I just love comedy and I dont know how I stumbled on that picture through Google but I just couldnt resist!
