Did you ever wonder why you are getting those spam emails?

Well here are two possibilities and a way around them.

1) Most likely you have a contact page for your customers to fill their information. The contact page can be used by spammers to send you those emails too. To stop these kinds of spams, you use CAPTCHA image on the contact page. You can see it used on this site when you try leaving your comments to a blog. You are asked to type in what you see in an image. Spamming tools (robots) cannot see the image thus stopping them from spamming you.

Here is a free, elegant tool to implement CATCHA image.

Here is a working example I built for a site. You need PHP knowledge to implement this.

I have explained it all in my blog.

2)Second possibility is embedding email address on your web pages which is harvested by spiders.

These can be tricked by dynamically creating the email address using Javascript which cannot be seen by these spiders.

I dont know if you saw my blog about this but the Captcha system has been defeated. There was a recent article that says there are large groups of people who are simply getting through this and it simply no longer works. If you want I can provide the link.

"...there are large groups of people who are simply getting through this and it simply no longer works"

If you look at how the robot submission works, CAPTCHA can stop many of them and I myself have seen it work on many sites I built.

That said, always there will be exceptions and it will be a cat and mouse game just like the virus and anti-virus softwares, hackers and security softwares etc.

If you focus on the number of spams prevented by CAPTCHA Vs number of spammers who got around of CAPTCHA, the numbers will be largely in favor of the first category and that is what matters for now. That is why it is being widely adopted by more and more applications during the registration process.

That said, I see your point and I do acknowledge that this will be ongoing game.
