The Wisdom of It All - History Repeats Itself, Again???

At my Rotary Club (Rotary Club of Novato Sunrise- we meet at 7:15am on Tuesdays, hence the Sunrise), we have a Thought of the Day ritual - those Rotarians are full of rituals ;-).

The Thought of the Day this week was quite striking, in my mind, and I thought it's worth sharing:

"The budget should be balanced, the Treasury should be refitted, public debt should be reduced, the arrogance of officialdom should be tempered and controlled, and the assistance to foreign lands should be curtailed lest Rome become bankrupt. People must again learn to work, instead of living on public assistance. Cicero 55BC"

Does this sound familiar, 1503 years later?  Do we feel like a speck of dust when you put all in perspective?  Is History going to repeat itself if we are not watchful?

What will the future hold for our kids if we don't go back to the basics, take the responsibility and stay vigil of our actions day in and day out as a Nation?

Hi Sylvia,

Good point. Yes, every now and then just when we think something maybe new or different, we realized that it's actually a part of history. Thanks for the reminder.

Amazing isn't it? There is a really deep and profound lesson to be learned here. The real question is...will we actually learn?

BTW...thank you so much for praying for my daughter. GBU!

Elizabeth:  You are most welcome.  Hope your daughter is feeling better.  I have both you and your daughter in my thoughts and prayers!

I hope we do learn.  We have been really spoiled being the leader of the world, and lose our sights.  Hopefully we will go back to the basics and remain the best!

I love the quote, it is amazing how history repeats itself.  We as people are not good at learning from history, we have to make the mistakes for ourselves.  Thanks for the post.

Thanks, Joey, for your comment.  When we heard the quote at the Rotary meeting, we were all amazed.  It's pretty ironic how things come full circle.

I just found on truthorfiction.com that this quote had some things added to it.  They say this is the real quote:

"The arrogance of officialdom should be tempered and controlled, and assistance to foreign hands should be curtailed, lest Rome fall."

I thought you may want to know.

I still like the point of the quote but a little disappointed if someone faked it and passed it around the Internet.

Here is the website http://www.truthorfiction.com/rumors/c/cicero-plan.htm .

Thanks for the post anyway.

Hi Joey:  Thanks for the info.  I got this from the Rotary meeting and really liked the quote.

So, according to Truthorfiction.com; part is true from 55BC, the others are added.  I wonder how the quote evolved and how many years it took to morph into what is in my post?

Fascinating!   Now I have to decide if it's worth letting the Rotarian who quoted this know - he is a lawyer and he will be horrified to find what he quoted is not entirely true.

So, you got me curious and I googled 55.BC.  Look at what I found http://thoughtsonmesa.blogspot.com/2008/09/cicero-55-bc-united-states-2008.html

Somebody actually quoted this in September.  So TruthorFiction.com is not entirely correct either :-)

I better get back to the basic - WORK!

Regardless of the quote's origin or correctness, the idea of taking responsibilty is a good one. No it's not new, it is something the entire country if not world needs to revisit.

Thanks, Kristal - I agree.  This quote is timeless and if one good thing coming out of our country's trouble is back to basics and then the hardship we are going to go through is all worith it.
