road

I think there are two types of people...

You are given a task, job, challenge, or project. How are you going to go about completing it?

There are those who will analyze the task at hand, and come up with the easiest, fastest, and cheapest way of completing it. They will do anything to get ahead, even if the easiest, fastest, and the cheapest methods aren't always the most ethical choices.

Then there are those who will analyze the situation, and find the best way to complete the project. The words, "a job well done", means something to these people. They will do whatever it takes to do the job thoroughly and professionally, and because of the way they conduct themselves, the choices that they make are more often then not ethical ones.

Without going into detail about what prompted me to write this, I just want to say I am amazed how some real estate agents who claim to be professionals conduct themselves. The code of ethics helps make the "rules of real estate" a little more black and white, there will alway be those who will prefer to operate in the grey areas.

What type of person are you? The ethical road may-not always be the easiest, and it may seem like those who take "easy street" maybe getting ahead in life. However, at the end of the day those who stay on the ethical road, are the ones who are truly successful.

Great post....Ethics.  Unfortunately that word is not in some real estate agents vocabulary. When I first got in this business 4 years ago (yes I am still a rookie) I came in with the attitude that "we" (read as Realtors) were a team working together to provide great service to satisfied clients. Well, it ain't always so! There are some real character-deficient souls out there wearing th "R" lapel pin. Realtor, Beware!

Do what's best for your client, be honest, be fair but also be straightforward and expect accountability from everyone involved in a transaction.  Sometimes I feel like people believe holding them accountable is unethical; however, I believe there is nothing wrong with holding someone's nose to the grindstone, whether is be a mortgage broker or co-oping agent.  If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen.  Even when you have done all of that, sometimes you still have to take it on the chin, get up, dust yourself off and move on.  That is life in the bare knuckles game of real estate.

"Character-deficient souls', that sums it up perfectly. It is really sad, it gives all of us agents a bad name. I guess we will just have to work that much harder to let the public know that there are honest and ethical real estate agents out there!

I agree real estate can-be a "bare knuckles game", and you have to have tough skin. You still can remain ethical. It is those who could be called "shady" real estate agents, that make me sick.

Sometimes it seems like nice guys finish last, but in the long hall, I think they finish way a head. It's not just Real Estate, there are people who bend the rules and have questionable character in every profession. The only advise that I have is to pick your battles wisely.

Kristy:

I would love to know what the inspiration was for this.  But you are wise beyond your years!  By the way, I think I know.

Kristy -- I think the high road is the best road!  I am amazed by how unethical some people are -- I don't think one can ever stop it -- hopefully, in the long run, those who play be the rules will be the most successful!

Great post Kristy.  Taking the higher road is always best.  Sometimes it would be so much easier to be like those that are unethical and character-deficient.  I agree we need a tough skin to play in the real estate arena.  Stay strong!  Remember, not to take things personally and if you feel knocked down, just push forward and get back in the game.  You'll be a stronger and wiser person for it.

Another thought...

Maybe the Code of Ethics just keeps the honest people honest.

Your right, I think you do know what my inspiration for this post is! It just amazes me what lengths some people will go to, to get ahead, and what is even more amazing is that they are able to sleep at night!

You are right "you reap what you sow". It's just frustrating when you work hard, and you see someone else who is getting ahead because they have found a way to cheat the system.

Kristy - Don't be surprised if those that seem to be getting ahead by "ill gotten gains" aren't really getting ahead at all!
