Marine Debris on Hawaii

Dotsam

Have you contributed to the dotsam?   Fritinancy (a site about  "Names, brands, writing, and the quirks of the English language" defines Dotsam: " The wasteland of abandoned Web sites, Hotmail accounts, blogs, wikis, MySpace pages, etc., that their creators have ignored for months or years but which remain accessible."

I have never been able to remember the difference between flotsam and jetsam but when @DigitalMaverick tweeted:

#ect08 found out about 'dotsam' = 'The wasteland of abandoned Web sites, Hotmail accounts, blogs, etc that we all sign up to and forget'

I knew the word dotsam was about flotsam and jetsam. The photo is of marine debris on Hawaii.   Flotsam and jetsam are marine debris of course.

I have contributed to the dotsam.  This morning I visited Utterli... I had messages people were following me.  I did not remember joining but it seems I did in April.  I had never "uttered" but there was an account tied to my email with a password I use, an avatar I seldom use... I musta set it up.   My MySpace page is just Dotsam.  Old Yahoo accounts... My Ning.com community I set up... for Maureens.  I could not get in the last time I tried.  Social Networking - What's the point? The Maureen Corp...

There's dotsam floating around on ActiveRain.  Does your Dotsam make you uneasy? Does other folk's dotsam look like litter to you?

Yeah, I sure contributed my fair share to this pile of dots!  Maybe we should start to recycle here.

Maureen -- this is very funny!  I am afraid I have left some tracks in the sand as well.  I googled my name and found over 100 entries -- oh my -- no telling where I have been!  I am going to have to do some house cleaning.

Love the word :-)   Have to ask, did spell checker highlight it in red?

Cracked me up Maureen.  And yes, I believe I have added to the landfill!

What can I say.

One persons dotsum or flotsam or jetsam is another person's content.

I am guilty of it.  Sometimes I play around and create some experimental pages or even a website.  Of course, when you try to get found by Google it always seems so difficult.  But when you hope no one ever finds it, sure enough, the page starts coming up for some keyword searches that people are doing.

It's true most of us have made an email address we don't use anyomre. I wonder how much memory all of the unused email addresses and websites use each year.

I am sure that I have some of that stuff floating around out there.  My problem is I have CRS disease you know, Can't Remember Stuff!

I "Can't Remember Stuff!" Did not remember Utterli.   Turns out Utterli is Utterz.  I remembered  joinging Utterz... just never went back.  I did not remember joining Utterli but there is other social media I've never joined that I get invites to from people and ignore.

I am guilty too.  Have signed up for sites, don't remember why I signed up, when I signed up.  Seemed like a good idea at the time.  Who has the time for all this stuff, thanks for the tip.

I did a social media plan early this year, inspired by Bob Carney.  If not I probably would have unleashed more dotsam willy nilly.

I am not sure if cyber litter is a problem or ever will be.  I don't feel "guilty" or necessarily like I need to clean up my dotsam or even if I would want to find it.  I think there are two types of dotsam... one is more natural like flotsam, driftwood and the other is more like litter. Some of the dotsam has been jettisoned into cyberspace purposefully.

Like Lenn said one man's dotsam is another man's content.   I don't know that the dotsam I've created  like my one Utter or my MySpace page are bothering anyone but they aren't adding much....  I have one hugeoid piece of dotsam out there my original blog.  It is no longer being added to but has a huge amount of content  gets a lot of traffic. It is dotsam.

Flotsam and jetsam were less problematic before plastics,  paper, wood etc. would just break down.  Plastics made pollution different.

Maureen - Oh, yes, I have contributed, as I suspect most have. And it will grow. I am putting together a spreadsheet to keep my social networking organized and easier to remember. Of course I have to use the spreadsheet don't I? Perhaps it's tiem to limit things a bit.

Maureen we can really get deep with this one.  Thinking about cyber trash and the like.  Landfills needed for the excess.. what would that look like?  Did Bill Gates think about that? I bet that's why he is pulling back and retiring. He had nightmares of this.

I hope the cybertrash sinks to the bottom or floats off to the edges of the blogosphere Stanley... thanks for the comment.
