How Big An Advantage Is Being A "Professional"?

By
Real Estate Agent with I.V.P.G. - Inland Valley Professional Group

Hi All,

Well, the time has come to discuss the elephant in the room.  Yes, I have, in the past, gotten paid as a writer.  Yes, I enjoy writing and yes, I am "good" at it.  This happens to be a gift I was given, a talent I pursue and a skill I cultivate.  And I don't think that is a bad thing.  I also don't think it is some huge advantage either.

The beauty, magic and effectiveness of blogging is that it is NOT dependant upon the skill or talent of the writer, but rather, upon that person's willingness to consistently share the unique way that they see the world.  While I can put words onto the page in a usually readable and hopefully enjoyable manner, I am green-as-grass in this forum and style of writing.  I truly have only been part of the blogging world for a mere 15 days, have had a blog site of my very own for 7 days and I have only been in the Real Estate business, with all my necessary tools in place since February of this year

I don't have months of blogging experience like some, and I don't have decades of Real Estate business experience like others.  If I couldn't use the skills that I have, I would be unable to compete at all.  But, I am not alone here.  All of us in the blogoshere, whether you are competing in this blogging competition or not, draw on our special talents and unique differences to participate and share with the community.

As for my being a professional writer, that just means that at some point, someone paid me for my words and how I used them.  I wrote a newsletter for the Commuter Transportation Department of a large entertainment company, have done a bit of technical writing (which sucked, in my opinion) and have done some tag lines and ad copy for a small electronics firm.  I don't make my living as a writer and unfortunately, never have

So don't be concerned about the fact that I have written before, be concerned about the dedication, eagerness to learn, willingness to try, and risk very publicly failing, and adaptability that I bring to the table... no, that we all bring to the table.  That is the true advantage and it is one that we all posess in very equal amounts.

Take care all, help lots of people and have a wonderful day!

You are right, being able to write and being able to blog are two different skills!  I write easily too but that doesn't mean I know the first thing  about blogging. Some bloggers are new to real estate but have an awesome "blog presence". I think blogs can be a great equalizer.

Above all, I agree that we all have different talents, skills, and "appeal" to others. I usually think I'm only competing with myself, and I think that's true in blogging too. We'll see if I'm right!

Meanwhile, keep up the good and very impressive work!!

Hi All,

Thank you Jon and Mary for your interest and your kind words.  I am very grateful for having found such a welcoming community to become a part of. The help we give each other and the spirit of togetherness that is fostered is truly what this pursuit is all about.

And Mary, I am also competing with myself.  After all, who knows my stregthes and weaknesses better?

Take care all, help lots of people and have a wonderful day!

Tisza - here's a great post with lots of passion and feeling - that's what it is all about.  Some of us don't know how to write and are learning as we go, but blogging for business is tricky and cannot be done overnight.  We need to identify our audience, we need to communicate to them.  You do write beautifully and I congratulate you for that, but I think we all have something different to offer to this contest as apprentices and people will benefit from that mere fact.  Let's share our hearts and we will all be winners at the end, guaranteed!
