This post is the epitome of transparency. This subject is of great importance to me and my family. What I am going to share with you is my experience and while I invite and enjoy lively debate I ask that if you plan to comment please read my entire post, do not insult my intelligence and respect that this is my experience and what I have lived in and through.  I want you to please really think about what I write in this post in relation to what is happening today. You will discover my passion for fighting and standing up for freedom, Capitalism and less government in our lives and why.

This is highly likely to be the most important election of our entire lifetime. While the message in my post is political in nature it is more about why I am who I am and not about the candidates although who I am has a lot to do with choosing a candidate who will be most likely to keep the entrepreneur spirit alive in America. Through many of my comments (of which I am proud to say) I am not about political correctness since my core belief is that the very essence of inquiry and free speech is squashed and diminished through political correctness in its' many forms. If you have read any of my political comments on other blogs here you will have bits and pieces of my experience. If you are a regular reader of my blog; you will know how I feel about taxation, freedom, parental rights, religious freedom, darwanism and global warming. This post is more about the how and the why.

If you have been following my plight to fight corruption in Latvia  with Russian mobsters and corrupt judges and government you will know a part of the heritage of my family of which I am very proud. I have very close first hand experience into what it is like to have it all and then have it all taken away from you.

I am born of a line of what they call 'blue blood', royalty dating back to the Viking Era on my mother's side. Our family tree is legendary and dates back to the days of medieval times. Latvia lies along the Baltic Sea and has throughout history been a very important seaport for export and military purposes and therefore Latvia has been the land that others covet.  Our family belonged to the group known as land barons which has a negative connotation in the world then and even now. You see, from the beginning of time, there has always been those who believe in wealth redistribution. But my family worked hard to buy land, to open factories, to build railroads and to provide jobs. All the members in my family were privileged to attend Universities in Riga Latvia and Kiev Russia before Stalin was in power. We had a summer house on the beach, land to cultivate crops that sharecroppers lived and worked on, and a bustling home in Riga for the busy meetings of business owners. We were what you would consider today as very wealthy. My family helped the poor, provided education for the sharecroppers children, trained many people to work in the factories, paper mills and to build the railroad going through Latvia that would later transport these same people to Siberian concentrations and Jews to their unmarked graves of mass slaughter.

Marx and Lenon has different ideas and partnering with Stalin poisoned the youth and spread propaganda about class warfare and how bad rich people were. That rich people needed to give their money to the those that did not work and that you should take from those that have to give to those that need based not on effort or work ethic but rather on the very popular held belief that all misery is caused by the rich who provided the jobs. Land ownership was propagandized as enslavement of the poor and landowners quickly were listed as enemies of the state.

Soon the entire country became enthroned in the Marxist movement, which quickly stomped out any right to inquiry and free speech. With the media on their side and wealthy elitists wishing to remain in power the lies quickly became that Marx and Stalin were men of the people and defenders of the poor. This was far from the truth and the more they rose to power, the more people were killed and scared into submission. Soon there were no more jobs, the government owned all the land and the buildings on the land. Then, the government owned not just your land but your mind too. Taxes were so high and the very essence of human dreams and goals were stomped out within the souls of the people. Most of the people my mother's homeland became alcoholics and gave up any desire to do anything for themselves. In fact, the devastation of the killing of the human spirit to prosper and grow created such entrenched enabling of dependence that when the Iron Curtain fell many people could not function and even worked to get communism back because that is what they knew. Alcoholics Anonymous chapters are the fast becoming commonplace in the former Eastern Block countries.

My family escaped the Stalin hit list by fleeing to Germany with only the clothes that they had on their backs and some sentimental items. They lived in a refugee camp in filth and poverty until a sponsor from the United States was found. Their new home would be in Tacoma Washington.Prior to leaving Latvia my grandfather contacted the United States to make sure that if he put his money in the banks here, it would be safe. He was assured that this would be fine. FDR broke that promise and my family discovered that their money had been given to Stalin.  In those days, the impressive degrees and PHD's meant nothing in the United States and would be of no help to them. My great grandfather became a janitor for the YMCA. My grandmother went back to school to replace her degrees and ended up being a high school teacher of languages. My mother went to Stadium High School in Tacoma and got a full scholarship to Stanford University where she met my father and got married. I was born in the Stanford Hospital.

Fast forward to when I was 8 years old; my mother and father divorced and soon my siblings and I would find ourselves in extreme poverty. My mother moved back to the states from Germany and went back to get her PHD at Stanford. Meanwhile I was the oldest of 4 children playing the caretaker role;  feeding, teaching and caring for my siblings. I wrote a tribute post for my mother here. We lived in a very upper income neighborhood which was quite tough because we were the have nots. My brother and I would shoplift, but we did not shoplift toys or candy. We stuffed food under our clothes because we were that hungry. One time the store manager stopped my brother who was wearing a big Parka. He opened the jacket and felt so bad for us that he put the food in a bag and let us go home with it.

It was during these times that I  formed my resolve never to be poor again. I would imagine myself being a model, an actress, a writer, a clothes designer, a rock star, a person of charity and a business owner. I felt in my heart that it was going to be up to me to make my own way. I did some crazy stuff as a teen and went pretty wild. My mother was a hippie and did crazy and irresponsible things. I was able to break free from the poverty mindset. I clung unto my 'blue blood', knowing that I was going to make it in this world and be successful.

I rose above it all to become a very successful business owner. I became a model at the age of 15, an actress at the age of 16, a clothes designer at 17 ( that was a short lived business), then a mother and a Realtor,  along with owning Tae Kwon Do schools for about 15 years, earning my black belt and instructor certificates, then a coach and a writer/speaker. One of my goals as a homeschooling mom was to instill in my children the spirit of entrepreneurship.

Through this journey I worked for what I gained. I became a successful businesswoman. I went broke a few times and made good and bad business decisions. But no one came to bail me out. Now I am considered 'RICH' by certain political candidates.  My family came from rich roots to poverty and I climbed back up the economic ladder. We gave more in % tithing than most candidates collectively give and now they want to take my honestly earned money and redistribute to those that choose not to work as I did and do. They think they know better than me who I should give my money to. At the tax bracket we are in, we are already straining for college tuitions for multiple children. Higher taxes would mean that our last 3 children may not be able to go to college. You see, how much money you make is relative to the cost of living of where you live and many other factors. You can live in great style in Kansas with a huge home for 250k per year, but that same amount of money would get you a small apartment in New York and the cost of living of everything else in New York would make a family with that income just average, not rich.

The best antidote to the poverty mindset is to become inspired  and live with passion.
The best movie I ever saw on this subject is the movie Will Smith portrayed Chris Garner in, The Pursuit of Happyness. If you have not watched this movie, please see the clip below and then go and rent this movie. This clip here is the Don't let anyone steal your dream clip and the one that is right after this one is when Chris and his son were homeless.

Poor people do not overcome poverty by hand outs. Poverty is a mindset. Money can not keep you where your mind can not hold you. I  can speak with authority on this subject. Rich people do not get empowered nor inspired to make more money by having it taken away from them. They either stop working as they did in England and Germany or they move their money out of the country. Ireland is looking pretty good right about now, but they don't have any short sales:)!

If you are in business for yourself; right now perhaps as an agent you are only making $50,000 or $75,000 but if you work smart and learn to push your income ceiling you too could be improving your business into the figures that have the new 'rich' definition to them. If you are looking forward to getting there, I am asking you to think long and hard about the implications to your growing business when you go into the voting booth. This is the most important election of our lifetime and will either make or break your business as you grow.  Watch this clip to experience what Chris Garner felt when all this struggles and all this trials turn into his blessing.

Thanks for sharing this. We're somewhat of a rags to riches story and we've worked very hard for it. As employers, we've seen applicants show up just to post their "three job applications per day" quota to the unemployment office with no desire to work, but only the desire to live off of welfare. So we too understand what hard work is and what it isn't. This year's election will certainly prove to be one of the greatest turning points in our nation's history. We're worried about it.

Good morning Katerina, I certainly do agree with you, "This is the most important election of our lifetime." I have many concerns. Thank you for sharing your life story and for reminding me what a great movie "The Pursuit of Happyness" is. I think I will watch it again. Linda summed it up well...WAKE UP AMERICA!

Katerina- Thank you for sharing your story.  I very much am in agreement, this is a very important election.  I am a bit on edge watching and waiting.  Like Eunice, I think I need to watch "The Pursuit of Happiness" again.  It was a wonderful movie, and I think it will be a great motivator!

Katerina,  Thank you for sharing. I'll have to rent the movie. My story is a little different.  My grandparents were peasants in Poland.  That's why America is so great. Everyone has the opportunity whether you are from peasant stock or royal stock.  The key is your mindset.  That is where the money comes from.

Katerina,  What a great American story! The American dream of working hard and rising to the top is being attacked by those who want to take from the rich and give to the poor.  It hasn't worked in any of the world economies who have tried it.

WOW!!!! I have chills amazing blog. I am the youth and most of my friends and others are poisned by this movement of change which is not always good. I like you have been on both sides of the tracks and agree you work hard and should not be punished for that. Also my parents owned the stores where kids stole like that on a regular basis, it's a cycle that the people learn how to get rich off the system and have no pride or desire to do anything else. My friend came from Germany a few years ago and they have what Obama is preaching and she said that's why I came to America it's horrible. No one works, why should they the government gives them everything. I have a bad feeling and only pray the Bradley affect takes place this election. My friend actually knows the real man who the movie is based on and has incredible stories to tell.

Katerina,

I knew there was something special about you besides being a christian. Thank-you for sharing from your heart all the struggles you have been through. Hopefully this country can avoid the marxism you mentioned.

I agree that this is the most important election that we have faced.

Why is it that all the activerainers that relocated to the states from other countries are voting for McCain/Palin? I will tell you why, they have seen marxism fail miserable and it will again if Obama is elected.

President Johnson tried it with his "great society" but it failed then as well.

I flagged this post for a feature but it may not be politically correct but I can feature it here on silent majority.

Congratulations this post is now featured in Silent Majority of Active Rain.

Very nice post. You have seen it all. I also have been on both sides. My family is American Indian and half of my family still recieves so-called reparations. They get paid to be what I call professional Indians. Some of them make pretty good money from all of the programs that they get paid through, but they blow it all on drugs and alcohol. They have no desire to get ahead nor any real thoughts of the future. Socialism will lead us to this exact same spot. People who get paid for just existing, cease to exist. We cannot afford Mr. Barack.

Katerina, your post is excellent, and the way you show how things became the way they were is chilling.  I have always said that this country will have another civil war, but it will be between the "have" and the "have nots".  I pray Obama is not elected, or we will all become "have nots".

Kevin- I can write all day on the subject of Native American Indians. The people of the Americas are near and dear in my heart.  All my years growing up, even as a child of 10 years old, I championed the cause of the Native American- many times only in spirit and in heart. Empathy is a gift God has given me. I feel what people feel. You are right, your people have been stripped of pride, of will, of freedom and of their dreams and passions. Ultimately it comes back to each of us and how we choose to respond to what happens to us and our experience. I am so proud of many of the achievements of Native Americans who have risen above the racism and oppression and really made a mark on humanity and the world. Nothing saddened me as much as watching great men become slaves of alchohol and drugs as my mother would travel to different reservations and teach us about this awesome culture that was actually very similar to our Viking culture in many ways.

Katerina, BRAVO for placing a personal viewpoint on the subject.  My family's history is similar, and my husband started working when he was just 11 years old and purchased his first business at 24.  I am the product of immigrant parents, both very poor, who made something of themselves with no help and were business owners themselves.  My son is studying entrepreneurship as a major, because frankly that is what he knows and has grown up in the midst of.  We have our roots in Greece, which is now a socialist country (and it's ironic that is where democracy started) and can't believe the mindset of the people there who expect and demand that the government do everything for them, yet their finances are in shambles.  Wealth distribution does not work, it punishes people for being hardworking and setting goals for themselves.  The issue isn't the dollar amount placed on it, whether it's $250K or more or less, it's the principle of it all.

I have similarities in my family history - most notably the pursuit of the American Dream by hard working immigrants who never expected nor accepted a handout but always looked favorably on a hand-up, and when they got to that position, offered hands-up to others. Too many people today have had everything handed to them and have never learned the value of hard work and the good it does for the pocketbook as well as the soul. Thanks for sharing your story. It's hard to attack someone who has walked the walk but rest assured there will be some here who only talk the talk and will want to take exception to your success. After all - if you were truly patriotic you would be only too willing to share more of your wealth with those who don't want to earn it.

Your story is compelling.  Unfortunately the people who need to be reading it probably won't.

Like so many who have commented on this post, I too have a story. My husband and I have worked VERY HARD for many years.  It's very difficult to listen to family members, friends and clients talk up someone whose policies will have a profound effect that will be felt for decades to come even after he leaves office; look at the legacy Johnson's great society has left us.  We will be working as hard or harder and keeping even less of what we make.

Most of all, if you can see my standing ovation for the highest respect I can pay to anyone here on Active Rain, this would be the one. I want to congratulate you for being able to write so well, to clearly describe yourself and speak your life into your teachings. You are a gift.

I've never walked the roads you have. But I have heard many stories. I will learn from it. And as I read your blog, my mind just replayed our phone conversation we had not too long about - about how you encouraged me and taught me about the Power of Abundance.

Hi Katerina - I knew of some of your background that you wrote here as I'd read previous posts about your fight for your family land.  You put your heart and soul into this post and I applaud you for what you've written here.

You're right about this being a very pivotal election facing all of us in America.  This upcoming choice will have impacts on all of us for years to come, and each vote cast needs to have much thought put into it.  Every vote counts, this election more than others.

You have certainly achieved one of your dreams - many times over - making a difference in the lives of others.  I'd bet you, more than any one single person here on AR, have brought about more change her than likely you realize.

Thank you for all you contine to share here, most especially this post.

Katerina,

That was so well said.  I know exactly where your coming from.  My parents and grandparents came to the US from Latvia with practically nothing.  They worked hard to get where they were.  From having nothing to owning a nice home in the suburbs, a good job for my father that my mother did not have to work was a great accomplishment.  They were proud of it.  Our current society is lacking that.  Everything these days is give me, give me, give me.  No one wants to work for what they need and want.

We don't need more change.  We need to get back to the way we had it before; to work for everything.  We need to earn our keep and show our pride.  I know many of the younger generation have no idea what pride is and how good it feels to have earned something.  We need to get that back.

Katerina - Unfortunately, most of the people who should read this, is too busy watching MSNBC to see how much Obama is leading. It's a strang workd we live in where people seem to forget the past, and let the same problems happen over and over again. I voted 2 weeks ago, and living In Tennessee, I know that my vote probably won't matter, as the replicans have owned this state for many years (AL GORE couldn't win here, and he lives in Nashville). I still believe that McCain will win, but we need to throw the liberals out of congress, or we will never have a balanced budget.

Hi Katerina,

Very moving. Though I have not walked the same path as you, I am proud to say that I rose above all things life threw at me and proud to be who I am. I hope people realize that compared to most other countries, the opportunities here are endless. You can do anything you set your mind to and be successful. If there is a will, there is always a way. It just amazes me how people live off other people and are even proud to hold up their head and say so.

Anyways, I am so glad you shared your story and taught people that Success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which the person has overcome.

You are a true inspiration. May God Bless You and your family.

Pursuit of Happiness is one of my favorite movies:) It is a MUST see.

Thanks for sharing your story. Inspiring. And true of a lot of people who come to this country penniless (and sometimes hampered by the language barrier) who make good by sheer will, determination, hard work and sacrifice.

People who appreciate the hand-up, not the hand-out...people who learn to fish and not beg for fish to survive.

I have watched Pursuit of Happy-ness. And had the pleasure of hearing him address our 2007 Mastermind Retreat (Buffini and Company). What a guy! Another example of rags to riches who made good on his own merit.

More power to you and people like you.

Tim- That is why I say, your money can't keep you where your mind can't hold you! Peasants and royalty got along just fine in Latvia. And I have a great story of my family name that you will appreciate:

When Germany took over Latvia a long time ago, don't recall the year, perhaps before WWI or so, they had Polish workers placed in Latvia to give the people of Latvia last names. You see, we were only known by the our first names and of the land we owned, etc. So my great great grandfather was Janis( pronounced like a Y), of Zemgale. All the Latvians were told to choose their last names. Then you would go into a line and tell the clerk what your new last name was. My great great grandfather was out speaking with some of his friends and decided on a name. Well, one of those guys went to the line and stole the name he had chosen. SO when my gg grandfather got up to the line, the Polish clerk told him he could not have that name. Someone else has it. SO he looked at the clerk and said, OK, you look like a decent lad, what is your name. The man says Dombrovskis. SO my GG grfthr says, that is fine, give me that name! Katerina

Katerina, I just came across this while looking at your SEO series. People like yourself and Jon Zolsky and the people I know who fled Cuba, speak from real life experiences. We are not immune to this type of thing happening in our country and we are foolish if we think it can't happen here. My prayer is that the American people will wake up before it's too late.
