Experiences that Transform

Every once in a great while, you encounter/experience something that revolutionizes/challenges your thinking, and transforms/changes the way in which you approach business/marketing. My involvement here on ActiveRain has been one such experience.

The REBarCamp is another.

The recent REBarCamp in Houston Texas was the second such event I’ve attended in the past year. I had also participated in the REBarCamp San Francisco, just prior to the Inman Connect.

For those of you who are not yet familiar with these events, REBarCamp is derivative of BarCamp, an international network of user-generated conferences characterized by spontaneous, open, participatory workshops. It was first started by O’Reilly Media in 2005, the same folks who coined the term ‘Web 2.0.

The Curse of the Costly Conference

Over the course of my professional career, I’ve attended more conferences, workshops, expos, trade shows, and conventions than…(select one of the following):

1)  McCain has friends      2)  Obama has questionable friends

As such, I consider myself somewhat of an expert on what constitutes a successful event.

In today’s challenging market, real estate professionals around the country are hard-pressed to justify and cover the expenses of attending industry-related conferences.

For the upcoming NAR Conference in Orlando, the full 4-day event costs $430. Add to that your air fare, hotel accommodations, and meals, and you’re easily up over $2000. At the Inman Connect in New York this coming January, conference registration is almost twice the cost of NAR Orlando.

Please understand, I am not downplaying or criticizing the value of events such as the Inman Connect or the NAR Conference. But realistically, not everyone has the ability, especially in this current economical downturn, to participate in these events.

The Conference that Comes to You - 100% Absolutely FREE!

REBarCamp, on the other hand, is FREE to those who attend. The costs for the event are shared evenly by sponsors who contribute a flat fee of $250 each. The monies provided through sponsorship help to underwrite the expenses of renting the meeting space, providing a nice lunch, and giving each attendee an REBarCamp T-shirt. REBarCamp events can be organized and held locally, eliminating costly travel and hotel expenses.

Enter at Your Own Risk

However, by its very premise, there is an inherent risk with the REBarCamp experience. Rather than having a predictable slate of scheduled speakers/presenters (hence the corresponding cost of the event), and their associated topics, the agenda for the REBarCamp isn’t necessarily known until the morning of the event. As people show up, those who want to present/teach a session can reserve a spot for the preferred time slot and classroom location up on the ad hoc schedule board, and promote their particular session/topic. So obviously, the nature and extent of your event topics/content will vary, depending on who shows up.

Lessons from the Trenches

Despite this risk, the compensating positive is that REBarCamp provides an open environment…

“where those who are passionate about what they know, can share their knowledge freely with those who are hungry to learn!”

The people who volunteer to teach or present the sessions at REBarCamp are typically those who not only know their subject matter intimately, but have practically implemented/applied it in the course of their everyday business. They’ve lived out what they know in the trenches and allow us to benefit from their experiences.

Continuing dEaD

How many industry-related conferences or CE classes have you attended where you came away with very little, if any, practical or helpful information that directly impacted your business? Unfortunately, all too many times, either the information is not relevant to the issues we face, or the speakers seem out of touch with our reality.

Vendors in White Hats

We’re extremely fortunate in our industry to have so many valued supplier/vendor companies who actively invest and participate in events such as REBarCamp. These are companies that have a vision beyond simply selling/marketing their products and services. They possess genuine concern and passion for the real estate industry, and seek to provide value for those of us who derive our living from it. My personal thanks to our friends at Trulia, Zillow, Altos Research, MLBroadcast.com, and Real Estate Shows for your ongoing support!

Trailblazers in the Web 2.0 Frontier

Additional thanks and gratitude should be extended towards those from among our ranks who have effectively laid the groundwork for future events to take place. People like Todd Carpenter, Andy Kaufman, Brad Coy, and Mike Price, to name a few.

It All Begins with You!

Imagine the positive impact we could make in our industry if each of us helped to organize an REBarCamp event in our own local market? For more informaton on how to begin the process, access the REBarCamp Wiki, or contact Mike Price at MLBroadcast.com for further details.

Called Shot Master

My ActiveRain BlogI'll bite and be the first to comment on this one.  Being new to all this, when I first saw "BARcamp" I thought this was some sort of real estate party.  Anyway, the conference sounds like a lot of fun and very informative.  To get my feet wet, Rebarcamp sounds like a great place to start for a newb like me!

I think the next venue for REBarCamp should be a live web conference;  The sponsor's contributions would go to funding the conference Webinar host account and maybe providing webcams at low cost to participants.  Sponsors' ads could be displayed in a side panel or banner during the conference.

GoToWebinar cost is $948 annual for unlimited Webinars with up to 1,000 attendees each.  (In fact, I'm feeling kind of tempted to set up a GoToWebinar account for my office.....)

Hi Rich - thanks for explaining what this is and how it works.  I thought I knew, but reading what you wrote provided more details than I thought were involved.  I would love for there to be one of these in my neck of the woods.  And I really love Cheryl's idea of a live web conference for one of these.

Rich now I get it.  I used to plan and attend dozens of conferences a year when I was in the technology industry.   I loved the smaller ones where I really was able to interact with our customers.  Look forward to seeing you next weekend in Orlando.

ReBAR camp at Inman in San Franscisco was the best. Going to NAR, but not the conference the Expo and BHB on Friday and to have fun with my AR buds. I like the model of REBar the best, but that's just me.

Rich: Ditto on Cheryl's suggestion. Why be limited by travel and geography? A New York or San Francisco or Houston or LA Camp could be shared with so many more.

Roberta and Cheryl:  Actually, during the REBarCamp in Houston, we had a live stream going. It was sweet! We'll make arrrangements to do the same in LA. But if you're in the LA area, you shouldn't use that as an excuse NOT to come. A huge part of the value proposition of these events is the personal connections. In addition, look for AR to create some live webinar events in the near future!

Sally & David:   There is one in the works for Chicago. Stay tuned!

Rich- I hope that there will be one in the Seattle/Tacoma area! I think with all of the vendors we have located here that it would be easy to get the costs covered. I know that I would attend.

I keep getting on a soap box at my office and finally a few people are starting to bite. (I'm sort of the poster child for Active Rain here!) Okay the last part is that folks need to realize is that this is F R E E...yep sometimes fantastic opportunities are FREE! I sure did enjoy meeting you and Brad and look forward to a rewarding future at Active Rain! Thank you again!

I'd always like to tune in to the live stream. Getting a bunch of forward thinking pros together in any industry is always so inpsiring. I was doing live streaming from trade shows back in 2000 when the technology was much younger. It's expensive to get to the mainland for conferences like this but exciting to see it spreading like wildfire. Aloha from Kauai...

Ronnie:  LiveStream makes total sense, especially for you guys on the Islands. I'll make sure that we offer it and promote it in future events!

Larry:  There's one being formed in Chicago in the Spring of 2009. Stay tuned for details!

Mara:   Atlanta would be a great location. Talk it up with other AR members and get something going!

Ricardo:   I am thrilled that you've taken the bull by the horns, and are organizing an event in LA. Keep me posted!

Scott:   We're going to do one in Seattle and another in Portland in 2009. Stay Tuned!

Marilyn:   I've heard that one is being organized to take place the day before the Inman NY Connect. Check the www.rebarcamp.com website for more details.

Tami:   What are you still confused about?

I will be at NAR.  I am flying to meet up with my brother using air miles (no charge for the flight).  Driving down with him. (price of gas)  Staying across the road from the convention center $69/ night.  Signed up for NAR Expo only ($25).  Not bad for coming from Hawaii.

Last year I attended NAR, paid the full fee and spent all of my time at side events and the Expo.  This year I decided to just sign up for the Expo.  I can always pay at the event if I decide to attend other parts of the conference.

I am like you.  I attend so many conferences and classes, that a lot of the sessions I have already seen before.

Rich, I didn't have a clue what to expect and I'm so glad I participated! It was just chaotic enough to keep the energy going and what a pleasure to get to meet so many familiar faces! I recommend this to anyone that can possibly make it and I hope these will begin to show up in all states!

Thank you so much for conducting the blogging seminars...very fun. I hope to get to see you and visit with you in the near future! Oh yeah, and buywaterfronts is a sponsor and a friend too!
